Pokkén Tournament |OT| King of Iron Tail Tournament

Are there any good guides up for beginners? Haven't had a chance to play all that much and want to make sure I'm learning good habits when I jump back on tonight. Been through the training, which was super helpful, but want to get some more guidance.

Machamp always looked kind of awkward to me but in this game, the way he moves is just so awesome and cool! Same with Garchomp, his design is just soooo cool! And seeing him move like that is just so new to me. I guess being any Pokemon move around like this is just too cool.

I know some of these guys are just as animated as they are in Smash Bros but I feel like because of the nature of Smash in general, it isn't as easy to appreciate the animations if that makes sense.

Also is anyone else kind of intrigued with the insides of the Pokemon's mouths?

Moonblast seems pretty good. Been holding A whenever I can with Gardevoir especially during Calm Mind and the follow-up attacks or when guarding too.

Switched from a PowerA Pro controller to a old school Classic Controller Pro(Thanks to those who recommended it). MUCH better, and I remapped block and support to the ZL ZR buttons, but still find myself hitting L R too
Wait, CAN you play single player with something other than the Gamepad? I tried a vs. CPU match (navigated to the menu with my Pro controller), but when I got to the character select screen the buttons on my Pro stopped working and I had to use the pad.

If there's a way to use something else though, that would be fantastic - or maybe alternate controllers for Player 1 are only available in the story mode?

Is it a regular thing that Chanderlure players spam the same beam attack from the start to the end of the match? So annoying.

Seems that way to me. They don't even switch it up after you counter it so it makes for easy wins. Do you have anyone to play with locally that would be willing to help you learn how to get around that little combo?

Yep. I am going to practice a bit more before I jump back online.

You can use any controller you want regardless, go to your My Town, and options, and controller settings, and set the one you wanna use.

When starting up the game, it will also ask you to press start on the controller you want to use.

You can also do a counter to absorb a projectile and then cancel it with a dash. Also whenever you get a knockdown and want to continue the presure blocking rarely helps any player (unless you are super low on hp). I just felt that I've been having more success using counters instead of blocks more often
Blocking gives you more frame advantage. You get more damaging combos off a punish than a counter.

I'm really enjoying this game so far. Online has been smooth sailing, only had one match that kinda lagged.

Trying to figure out some Braixen combos right now. Zoning a lot with projectiles and trying to keep opponents as far away from me as possible, but I'm not sure if that's the best way to play her.

I really like Librechu but it honestly still bothers me that they chose to add a second Pikachu to the game in a franchise with over 700 different Pokemon. Never mind Howlucha as a perfect choice there are plenty of Fighting types to choose from, and they choose Pikachu in an outfit.

Does anyone know what is the correct thing to do when you're downed and getting up? It seems no matter what I do I get screwed. I've tried going to block, attacking asap, grabbing, whatever and I immediately get punished or whatever they're doing is just faster than me. I've been playing Suicune exclusively and there doesn't seem to be much I can do when opponents stay right on top of me.

Also I had a bullshit moment where I activated my super attack, then a second later the guy I was fighting activated his, and somehow he broke through mine and got his in.

Beyond that this game is pretty dang fun.

On the other hand, if you try to do a safe string on shield or a long poke (pun not intended) in neutral to test for shield/grab (like low stand lucario kick) counter work against those were shield would not (you get a lot of pushback when you hit shield, but nothing when hitting counter with these, so safe on shield, but not on counter). Like I said, I find that I want to use counter more often than shield, but I dont think shield is completly useless.

Edit: Tick throws is something were you are in better position if you were shielding instead of countering when they try it on you, as the grab will get a critical hit vs the counter but you can easily drop the block and go for a critical with a jab.

Just depends on the reads, like in most games. If they predit the block, then they'll grab. But if you predict them grabbing, then a normal attack will punish them.

In terms of them doing a faster move than you, I haven't used Suicune, but the general fastest move for most people in duel phase is Down + Y right?

I think it's pretty great how you can change your trainer's gender whenever you want and have them customized so you don't have to put everything back on them again. Pretty nice, I'm currently rocking the female Trainer due to the expected "better" or more options females tend to have but I'll be looking at what the male gets the more I play and such.

When you're downed you ar playing a guessing game with the odds stacked against you. You have to try and guess what your opponent will do and act accordinglyly. If you guess wrong you're taking damage.

There's a split second window when you activate your super but before the cutscene starts where your character flashes. If someone can react fast enough they can go into burst mode or activate their own super if they are already in burst mode to counter it.

Pikachu Libre only exists because they could reuse pikachu assets. Hawlucha would require a lot more time and effort.

Literally every one I've come across does this. Which makes the match hilariously easy as Pikachu. Just use Thunder then proceed to combo them to death. Most don't even try to even move around lol.

The thing is that blocking almost never does anything, most of the time you want to be in the RPS, and block is outside of that.

Blocking is fantastic in this game. Helps to prevent people from straight rushing you and allows you to punish afterward. Very handy in field phase as well with blocking the more projectile oriented characters.

I haven't got this but hearing that attacks beat throws clean gets me rock hard as a VF player. Might have to give it a go.

If you are outside of your character ranges to go into the rps system, you definitely need to block and/or counter dash cancel to get in the ranges you need. What I meant is that when you are playing your game, or the oponent is playing theirs and both of you have access to the Counter/Grab/Attack rps, shielding is outside of that and doenst do much right there. An unsafe block string can be punished sure, but you can also do a safe block string that leaves you outside your oponent range. On the other hand a safe block string wont get push back if it hits a counter so it is unsafe.

Yep, it's practically instantaneous. Capcom needs to outsource their netplay and matchmaking to Namco Bandai one of these games.

I have to wonder how Namco did it, tbh. I've never seen it go beyond 5 seconds. You can play like 30 games in an hour. It's insane.

But I think matchmaking going on while you play Arcade Mode (if SF5 had it, lol) would be a nightmare if you actually, you know, wanted to beat it.

So, now that more people have played it: How long is the Ferrum League? Also, how hard does it get near the end?

If I'm not that good at fighting games, should I even bother, if I don't love it to begin with? I don't want to invest a lot of time then hit a brick wall.

I see what you're saying. However I've definitely had times where it's been better to go for the block and punish rather than directly counter an attack.
