Pokkén Tournament |OT| King of Iron Tail Tournament

I know attack is just flat out better than defence in most cases (I think it was determined to be a 10% buff for max attack versus an 8% buff for max defense) but how about the synergy stat?

Probably not worth giving up the damage but it'd be interesting to know.
No idea sadly.

For Strategy though it depends on the supporter. The effect on charge time ranges from jack shit (Espeon, for example) to like 8 - 10 seconds (Umbreon).

I just got this game and I'm getting my ass handed to me. I did the tutorial and hopped straight into friendlies. Playing as Garchomp right now, but damn I really need more practice! Buuuut! Getting stomped here is no where near as breaking as killer instinct. I'm actually enjoying myself here!

Today is the day that I felt like I understand the game.

When the mode would switch from field to duel I just wasn't aware of my options. Being next to an opponent and knowing the games Rock, Paper Scissors is one thing but the field always threw me off.

Finally realized that in field jumping and pressing different directions doesn't change anything. X in mid air is a homing attack with all my characters, Y is a projectile attack. I kept getting walled out by everyone until I just toyed with that. Forget the combos for a moment, go to tutorial and just go to Free Training(or something like that). And don't look at the move list, just toy with all your straight forward options in Field. Then toy with your options in dual afterwards.

Once I did that I stopped getting totally lost and demolished as the changes of perspective happened. I actually won 5 Friendlies in a row today, when before my record was like 30 matches, 10 wins. Today I could see what was going on and for the most part I could tell what I was doing.

I know that Harada said every Pokemon has a least one Tekken referenced move, but I swear Braixen only has moves that come from Soul Calibur. She has two of Xianghua's animations, one of Amy's animations, and her counter move is similar to one of Ivy's unlockable animations.

In fact, Braixen's mid match victory pose is extremely similar to one of Lexia's victory pose as well.

They might've made Braixen have SC references instead of Tekken references since she basically uses a weapon. Pretty cool if so.

I did all the tutorials, thought I had the game down, went through the Green League without losing a single match (ended up losing to Dark Mewtwo... when do I get to face him again?), and stink online. I've never been good at fighting games and never played a fighting game online. how do i get good?? keep doing the 1P league stuff probably?

Practice! The AI up until Red league is a joke. Sit yourself in the training dojos and start working things out.

Also Dark Mewtwo is a "supposed to lose" match for Green and Blue.

Honestly, the best way to improve is to lose a bunch online and analyse why you lost. The AI is not a good barometer as it doesn't play and adept like a human would and may even teach you bad habits.

Also important is not to be discouraged! Even utter beatings can be useful to your growth as a player! The first time I fought a Garchomp, I got utterly bodied and barely took any life off him at all. I took it as a lesson and worked on identifying weaknesses in my game and the strengths of my opponent. I fought the same guy again a few fights later, and while I still lost, it was a three round match with my two losing rounds being down to the wire. Those losses taught me more than all my AI fights combined.

Messing around with chars still to figure out who I want to play. I might do Braixen and Charizard to start out because they seem fun. Machamp is easy to play, lol.

Online seems fine even with wifi which surprises me.

Man stuck in D4 hell hurts so bad, especially when Garchomp and Machamps gate my progress. Figured that Braixen would have it easier against the champ, C or higher are no jokes.

So does all the non-league fighting happen regardless of the outcome of the Shadow Mewtwo fight after the red league? I managed to best them then and completed that part so I'm curious if it's triggered by beating him in an encounter or if it just always happens then.

Gah. Lost to a few gimmicky things today. Sometimes I feel like I'm just starting to figure them out and then the round is over. Weavile and Pikachu are very annoying with their "feint" attacks.

Completely shut down a garchomp with gardevoir though which was kind of awesome, got a perfect round one. The back+A -> A attack is really good against his digs.

Machamp and Garchomp are my boys man! And as soon as I think I got decent handle on them I'm going to use Blazekin as well! Dude is Sanji from One Piece! Diable Jambe, Hell's Memories! Those kicks boy! I love watching Blazekin fight!

So I've been using Sceptile and it occurred to me he's best used as a lame ass zoner. Am I wrong? Burst mode just makes him a better zoner too along with 1 good extra string

Sceptile will lose on a zoning battle versus the real zoners (Braixen, Chandy). Sceptile is good on mid to short range, and the traps are much effective for pressure. On burst, he is one very scary monster. The PokeString and Grabs do shitton of damage. Combine it with one good assist and it would wreck the shit out of your opponent.

What's everyone's favorite support set? I like using emolga and fennekin with blazekin

I'm liking Croagunk/Sylveon with Gardevoir since Croagunk sort of keeps people from trying to go in on me for a bit, but I might mess around with some other supports like Jiraichi/Whimsicott or Rotom/Togekiss.

This is something I dont understand. How can you not find this fun? It happens a lot in Smash Bros as well, when you fight spammy players with Samus/Toon Link/Falco. It is the epithome of a boss fight. You have to find your way to their "weak spot" while dodging constatly changing patterns of projectiles. I find it amazing.

I'll admit, it was thrilling to win 2/3 of the matches I had.

I'm pretty sure the one Braixen I fought only knew how to use one button. That's all she did, and once I closed the gap, she didn't know how to react and Blaziken just beat her handily with a fury of kicks.

The other Braixen I lost, badly. She knew what she was doing. I don't know why I was even matched with her, she was a letter and a half higher than me in rank and had four times as many games as I had.

I won against the one Chandelure I fought. He knew how to play, but a clutch Overheat whiff gave me the chance to secure the final round.

Reshiram and Cresselia. With Blaziken.

Cresselia round 1, Reshiram round 2 (since it's fully charged), if it goes to 3, back to Cresselia.

I'm making my way through the singelplayer and the game finally clicked.

The execution barrier is low (which is good) and I really enjoy the rock-> paper-> scissors mechanic.

Really hope this becomes a mainstay series, Pokken is to non-smash fighting games what Splatoon is to shooters. I like it.

What do these two do? I don't think I've tried them yet.

The pokken pad is really comfy.

Cress is a fast charging buff support that heals (L) and boosts synergy (L?) but can only be used once per round.

Reshiram is a slow charging attack support that fires an advancing laser beam. I think it also buffs your synergy. Comes out very quick and does a ton of damage if it hits. I'm pretty sure you can use it as a punish for a lot of things.

If you're using standard cheer it's nice getting Reshiram at max for round 2.

Nice thanks for the info. I may have to look into using them

Ok, so he is somewhere in the middle. Started to get annoyed at his close range options but he seems to wreck when you take advantage of the projectiles. I was more interested in playing close though. Think I'll give Lucario a shot.

If you want to get real close, Machamp is your slow option, Pika Libre is your fast one.

Pokken was the #1 WiiU game on Amazon Germany yesterday and now it's apparently sold out. Looks like it's a decent success commercially

Cool! I don't usually care much for sales numbers but I'm interested in these ones. I know there's "no plans" but if it's a big success perhaps they'll consider DLC or a sequel down the line. I'm having a ton of fun with this game and there is a nearly endless potential for new fighters.

Trainers are becoming more and more formidable online, is it just due to matchmaking? I almost lost an entire rank up challenge, and that's never happened to me before.

People are getting used to zoners, and mirror match ups with fellow Gardevoir is like one of those anime/X-men battles at this point. It's intense, but I love it.

I think I'm going to invest in the Hori pad, I know thumbs being sore is a common hurdle for fighting games, but how's the pad? More comfy?

The pad is smaller and a tad bit more comfy. You will adjust to the light weight of the controller quickly. Don't expect a huge advantage in play though

Cool. Speaking of Pika Libre I played an impromptu best of 5 (I left after 5 anyway) and I legit had no idea what was going on at the start. Am I getting combo'd or thrown? Is this combo over? Where the hell is all this armor coming from? Is it ok to press buttons now? No its not ok to press buttons now.

Pretty much settled on only using the light auto combo and zoning. I'm not even sure I learned anything tbh lol

I have trouble spotting the holes in combos of the pikas, libre in particular has looong strings. Maybe because they're so small it's kinda hard to see.

And I never know what the fuck Gengar is doing at any time.

Remember some months ago a report came out about the arcade version not doing well and it being pulled from arcades? Was there any truth to that?

What ever the case I'm glad this version is doing well. I love 3D fighters but man do I have a hard time with games like Tekken. This is just as simple and as complex as I would want in a 3D fighter.

The rock, paper, scissors system is getting easier to understand with all the colorful effects to remind me whats what and honestly block covering every angle is just so much easier on my mind. Having to worry about high blocks and low blocks in Tekken and Soul Caliber was always tough for me because some animations confuse my perception of what I think is a high or low attack. I was a total newb in Tekken Tag 2 and for the life of me couldn't figure out how to stop that little old professor from constantly jet sliding into me as I tried to stand up from being knocked over.

Pro controller dpad has been way easier on my thumb TBH. I can't recommend the Pokken pad.

One arcade returned the game because it wasn't making enough money, not necessarily because people weren't playing, but because people weren't losing and putting in more money enough.

So it just one report being blown out of proportion because the Internet.

I love Pika Libre's additions as she powers up. The moves are so long too, I can occasionally break through someone's counter with her Down A in duel mode and get them with the jump at the end. Plus it seems like she has a great wallsplat game because many of her attacks don't activate the phase shift.

But she's fragile as hell and the damage per move is relatively low.

Wow, now that sounds legit because I cold totally understand. I was slightly hesitant about this game because of the report I mentioned. After playing through it fairly thoroughly I was thinking how anyone could not have fun with this?

I agree with 2, 3, and 4. But 1 is necessary to keep the way it is. The game is balanced around having both phases. Losing one or the other would make the game less unique and less balanced. It would also fracture the player-base into preferring different styles (Field only, Duel only, or normal).

1 is ridiculous, the game is balanced around phase shift. Having 1 or the other would make certain mons useless. Plus field phase is nothing like Tekken.

2 Same as 1, it is a comeback mechanic. Balanced around it.

3 Was this confirmed?

4 This is fine, my guess is that TPC doesn't want to mess with the colors of pokemons unless they have to such as mirror matches. Brand recognition, etc.
