I've been liking Umbreon despite the slow charge, it's kind of like Fennekin but also steals some synergy bar. Sometimes Espeon is a good back-up if I'm against a Chandelure.

I haven't explored assists as much as I'd like. I tried Frogadier/Eevee and Fennekin/Emolga for a while, moved to Snivy Lapras (mainly for Snivy). Tried going with Cresselia for a while (just Cresselia, since I had switched to Synergy cheer by then).

Finally settled on Diglet. He feels pretty comfortable, charges pretty quick. He can be hard to get out in high pressure situations though, need some distance for that. But most of the more exotic ones I've barely messed with.

I know they get punished for rage quitting ranked but nothing stings more than playing a great two rounds, about to win the final round, only to have the asshole disconnect and me get no win for it. Rank up match too. God damn baby.

got the game today, playing through the leagues right now and will try online later though my connection is pretty awful still so I dunno how that will work out

played around with Braixen and Chandelure so far. I like Braixen but she seems a bit predictable to me, I'll have to test her more. Chandelure is god, I just wish his laser would do chip damage

Man, Chroma league is such a grind. And losing even a single match seems so costly.

Wait until you get to Iron League. Honestly once I found out a good strategy and a couple moves I could spam often the challenge became basically non-existent. Blaziken's Blaze Kick would just tear through everyone.

It's not the Pokemon, it's how you use it. :p
But you need to play to the Pokemon's strengths. That or lose more than you should.

Nothing wrong with spamming though. Feels like zoning in field phase is a big part of this game. 25% of the characters are (afaik) focused around it.

Yeah, you do whatever you have to to win (unless it's an infinite, fuck anyone who uses them)

btw, what's Gardevoir's strength? I usually use Braixen but want to mix it up a little.

Gardevoir is definitely a zoning focused character. Scores of projectiles of varying speeds paired with traps make approaching a nightmare.

Gardevoir's a more technical zoning character. She doesn't have a standing, big fuck off beam, but has a bunch of trickier projectiles and traps. She also has really good anti air with delayed traps and anti air attacks that hit pretty much everywhere that's not the ground m

Her primary weakness is in close range, where her normals lack both range and speed. For what it's worth, she has multiple counters to make up for this, including what I believe is the only air counter in the game.

Storing calm mind charges is her big gimmick. Pressing back and A starts a calm mind, which opens up additional moves. You can store up to three stacks of calm mind, which powers up her Stored Power, which when fully charged, has medium range, tons of power and some anti air. Calm mind does however have a fairly long recovery time, which means you can be punished for being predictable; even at long range if your opponent has a beam.

Finally got Blaziken up to lvl 75, that's two gold ribbons now including Machamp, yaaaay.
I'm thinking that maybe I'll start taking Garchomp for a proper spin soon.

Continuing the trend of "I thought I knew how this game works" i've had a few moments where when predicting a grab as Blaziken and using one of his strong attacks to counter leads to the grab managing to cancel it out and then on occasion leaving me at the disadvantage, I call shenanigans dammit!

Played online for 10 matches, friendly matches as I've never been one for ranked.

Won 7/10 battles. My Pikka Libre beat all of the fast pokemon and battled one really annoying Gardevoir who stayed in range, managed to win with counters to go through her ranged shit.

But jesus christ you guys. I fear a good CHandelure player. The one I battled absolutely wrecked my shit. Like I didn't even touch his life type of deal.

Shadow mewtwo I fought one and he kept spamming that power that's like a moving tower. Fuck that thing, can't go over it can' only block considering how slow moving it is. If your strategy to win as him is to spam that, then a hearty fuck you.

Finally played some online matches, there's definitely noticeable input lag (unless it was just the people I was being matched up with, which is possible). It especially hurts when the beginning of matches fails to register your immediate inputs -- forcing you to wait an extra second longer. :/

That all being said, the quick matchmaking kind of makes it hard to put it down. I had to put it down, though, and stopped about halfway through E4 rank (I only played about 9 games, I used most of my time finishing the Chroma league).

So, I don't really think the netcode is amazing but it works and that's fine by me.

I have so much trouble pulling off combos in this game... When in the animation are you supposed to press the button?

I usually just hit the next input immediately after the hit of the previous attack. Though some things like comboing off a launcher might require intentionally delaying your input depending on the combo/character.

as it turns out Chand seemingly has better close-range options than Braixen and Sceptile ... well, not completely sure about the latter, I don't quite get Sceptile yet

watched the Chandelure getting destroyed by Suicune. Mirrors my experience with that matchup, everyone's complaining about Chand yet only one projectile does chip damage (not counting the mortar) and most are either weak or can be easily avoided. Suicune's blizzard is just damn stupid, on the other hand

ok the next Chand was a lot better. Now I learned about the laser swing laser and down attack swing down attack combos

You don't want to use Spamdelure? :p

I'm using it as a chance to practice combos and timing stuff with Gengar so it doesn't feel like a complete waste.

I don't think I'll do that. I just want to unlock the stages, characters, and supports.

She does have a beam! ...but it's a bit slow to come out and has a hitbox right next to Gardevoir before it fires. It's stuck on her A button negative edge though, meaning you need to hold A until she glows and release to use it, so it's not exactly something you can spam. It also means you can't use calm mind or future sight while charging which sucks when trying to zone in duel phase.

Sometimes it comes out after a fully charged counter attack for me, because I guess I hold down A + X for too long after landing the hit.

I really need to set a trigger to A so I can use it more. It seems like a pretty good move for the most part, especially in field where the drawback of holding the button doesn't seem as bad.

Been switching from frogadier assist to cubone back and forth depending how I'm feeling. frogadier mostly since he does 2 attacks between that time frame I can just grab as they think the 2nd shots will hit first and cubone after a critical hit with sceptile's Forward A, after Forward A doing a Down A for the grab, spam the cubone assist to pop out , pop burst , it won't hit the opponent since he/she is still being juggled by cubone's boomerang . After the 2nd hit from cubone does contact , Doing Sceptile's super will lead to the full animation attack and do good damage since it's off a crit. Really great assist are in this game

Pikachu Libre also has an air counter. I believe is air A

Jeez I think I need to not play this when I'm overtired. Lost a ton of games and narrowly avoided a rank down.

Stopping combos to grab seems really strong online. I've only had a few people catch me on it the first time and it was a mewtwo mashing psystrike. I fall for it all the time against charizard and machamp players.

Its because the have command grabs that they can do that

Based on personal experience and friends' opinions, I'd say that the current top 5 characters (in no particular order) are:

Weavile - speed and insane mixup potential.
Gardevoir - arguably the best Zoning character.
Pikachu - tons of ambiguous pressure
Shadow Mewtwo- hitboxes everywhere with plenty of damage behind them.
R Pika - I don't even know what's going on anymore.

Although I've been surprised and impressed by all of the cast (except maybe Lucario) and feel that everyone is viable (except maybe Lucario).

Finishing a close battle with a synergy burst special attack never gets old. This game is ending Splatoon's almost year lock as my top Wii U online multiplayer game.

Gengar + Synergy Cheer + Cresselia turns the Ferrum League into Easy Mode.

Also, it's so fucking annoying that you can beat Shadow Mewtwo in the story fights, and the game doesn't even acknowledge that you won.

It's kinda scary how much I hate Braixen by now.

I don't understand, I think she's a marvelous character.

I main Braixen.

That said, it's been a while since I've felt this invested in a fighting game...I already tanked 91 ranked (and only won 50 but shhhht- I'm working on trying to get over 60%WR).

I love it, a lot!

Finally finished the Chrom League and unlocked everything related to gameplay. Don't care about the cosmetic bonuses you get from the one after it.

I guess it's time to really start to dig deeper into the characters.
