Why would this discourage anyone? This is like putting up a giant sign that said, "eating children is a felony." There is no voter fraud.

I'd say what a waste of money but that looks like it cost 3 dollars.

A longtime aide to George W. Romney issued a harshly worded critique of Mitt Romney, accusing him of shifting political positions in “erratic and startling ways” and failing to live up to the distinguished record of his father, the former governor of Michigan.

Walter De Vries, who worked for the senior Mr. Romney throughout the 1960s, wrote that Mitt Romney’s bid for the White House was “a far cry from the kind of campaign and conduct, as a public servant, I saw during the seven years I worked in George Romney’s campaigns and served him as governor.”

“While it seems that Mitt would say and do anything to close a deal – or an election,” he wrote, “George Romney’s strength as a politician and public officeholder was his ability and determination to develop and hold consistent policy positions over his life.”

Mr. De Vries’s stinging assessment was contained in a nearly 700-word essay that he distributed to a small group of journalists with whom he has spoken over the past year. He said it was an outline for a book that may or may not be published. A spokeswoman for the Romney campaign declined to comment.

...

Mr. De Vries said he was annoyed by Mr. Romney’s repeated references recently to his father as inspiration and influence on him.

“I just don’t see it,” he said. “Where is it? Is it on issues, no? On the way he campaigns? No.”

Mr. De Vries continued, “George would never have been seen with the likes of Sheldon Adelson or Donald Trump.”

(Mr. Adelson, a casino magnate, is a major donor to the “super PACs” that support Mr. Romney.)

Mr. De Vries, who said he wished to the see the Republican Party return to its moderate roots, said he intended to vote for Mr. Obama on Election Day.

In the now defunct ConservaGAF thread I posted how billboards like that were going up in low-income areas of Cleveland. Then some clown retorted that voter fraud exists but because laws to stop it are so lax that of course it's impossible to detect. Derp.

You sound pretty smart and knowledgeable. Could you post more?
It's not going to inhibit the growth of transnational terrorism across North Africa. Clearly. The problem eclipses a few targeted strikes. And the group's prominence was already elevated after the attack, so their fear on that dimension is unwarranted. But the peril of alienating regional governments is genuine. Normally, resentment accrues gradually after recurring violations. But if we strike now, the intelligence will probably be substandard. Therefore, the probability of a grievous mistake is considerably higher. I'd prefer they abstain from any action, especially drone strikes, unless the evidence is conclusive. That is an area where our knowledge is suspect.

Also, this is another indication that Libya was not without its consequences.

Things like that are all about playing to the statistics. You think, well that wouldn't keep any reasonably intelligent person from voting, but when considering the entire populace of a country not everyone is reasonably intelligent. As long as it's done in a way to disproportionally affect one side, it'll make a slight difference.

I think it's more designed to push the agenda of there being widespread voter fraud to attract more attention and support to voter id laws.

He seems to know his stuff. I never thought about this election as losing my freedom. Who doesn't want the freedom to be denied access to healthcare? Or our first freedom to discriminate against gays and control women? Germany voted for a guy...with a mustache. VOTED. This is scary stuff.

Mitt Romney received a major boost on the eve of the second presidential debate when his team announced he had raised $170m in campaign donations in September, putting the 2012 election well on course to be the costliest ever.

Romney's haul is $11m less than Obama took in over the same period. But the strong fundraising effort by Romney and the Republican party is notable because it came before the first debate in Denver a fortnight ago, at a time when Romney's campaign was thought to have stalled.

Given that Romney took in $12m in the immediate aftermath of the Denver debate and that more people will become engaged as the election draws closer, the Romney campaign is looking to surpass the $170m figure this month.

Wow, only $10 mil less than Obama. I wonder if they are playing with the figures a bit, like last month.

What's weird is that the other billboard floating around said to be in Ohio is also here in Wisconsin near me... Except this one is pretty damn close to being right in the middle of the whitest, most Republican party of Wisconsin. So, I think it's kind of odd that people are really angry at these signs.

Good stuff. Looks like he's ready.

WASHINGTON—Saying he was excited to “finally get out there” and defend his policies in front of the entire nation, President Barack Obama told reporters he was energized and eager to participate in his first debate of the 2012 election cycle Tuesday night.

“Everyone—myself, my opponent, pundits, the media—we all recognize how crucial the first debate is, and that’s why I can’t wait to knock it out of the park,” Obama said Monday during a break from his near constant debate training sessions, which he described as essential for making a strong first impression on viewers. “After all the sound bites and attack ads, it’s great to at long last have the opportunity to appear alongside my opponent and offer a full-throated argument in support of my plan to return our middle class to prosperity.”

“You don’t get many chances to clearly articulate your policies and rebut those of your opponent in front of the entire nation,” Obama continued. “And I don’t intend to let this opportunity slip by.”

Telling reporters he needs to be at top of his game if he hopes to win over independent voters in the first debate, the president said he has been hard at work honing his rhetorical skills so he can set the tone for the rest of the campaign. He noted that in particular he has focused on not being afraid to go on the offensive and on perfecting his body language, which he said would be “absolutely essential” for gaining the upper hand in the first contest between the candidates.

Moreover, after months of being attacked on the campaign trail, Obama acknowledged he was looking forward to finally dispelling what he described as baseless allegations leveled against his administration, saying he would “relish the chance to set the record straight once and for all.”

In addition, sources confirmed Obama has eagerly awaited “this, the first of three debates,” so he can seize on the Romney campaign’s numerous gaffes and repeatedly draw attention to the GOP nominee’s shifting policies. Hoping to employ Romney’s own words against him, Obama said it was vital that he use his initial debate appearance to “drive home” the message that his opponent is unprincipled and out of touch.

“Look, it’s the first debate, which many people would argue is the most important of them all, so I have a responsibility here to come out swinging and really set the pace for the next two matchups,” Obama said. “Now, Gov. Romney is also aware of just how important the first debate is, so we expect him to be on the attack. But now is my first chance to really show people I’m completely focused and not at all rusty, so expect a spirited discussion.”

Seems like you can do pretty well on the California propositions by just always voting with the League of Women Voters and against the Chamber of Commerce.

Not sure how much you guys are following California's Prop 37 which is to force the labeling of GMO's on our food.

But the Yes on 37 put out a response ad (we've been getting a bunch of No on 37) and it's a spoof ad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK3i2n8QGvQ

very well done.

I don't know how I feel about this. On one hand, it might make people more paranoid if GMOs if. On the other, it might make them realize that it's in everything already.

Posted this in the mormon/exmo thread:
So I'm in Houston this week and met a mormon guy at the lounge. He said said that he wasn't voting for Romney because it's obvious that Anne Romney doesn't wear garments. I was like "WTF man? Romney's as wonderbread mormon as they come."

He pointed me to these pics:
a_2x-vertical.jpg

main-qimg-f198888b1f24a7cd0123f69048497184

And a few others saying that he doesn't care about whether they're mormon or not, but he does mind that they come off as very staunch mormon and then she doesn't wear garments. I guess it's starting to be a "thing" now.

Personally from those pics unless she's got safety pins all over the place I don't see how she could be wearing "gs"
I did find it interesting. Goes to that whole narrative I keep bringing up that faith is a thing of convenience. Like Romney being on the board of Marriott for decades despite making tons of money off of porn. Or all the money he made off tobacco. Again, I don't care if they're like Hunstman, being like "I'm sorta in my own way with the church." but it's a completely other thing to be sell your faith as a main selling point and then being so "wishy-washy" with it.

Wait, Mormons have to wear special underwear? Never knew that.

Also,
Adherents consider them to be sacred and not suitable for public display.
So, shouldn't it be a good thing that Anne Romney isn't visibly wearing them in public, or am I missing something? Is she not allowed to dress nicely for public appearances?

Being a mormon is Romneys "being black" thing. Bringing it up can only complicate things. In that way they have something in common:they have 1 part of themselves that they rather never discuss.

Active mormons have to wear a special garment that they covenant to always wear.
The fact that she doesn't wear it would point to the fact that she doesn't think the covenant isn't very important/worthy of attention. Meaning she's willing to bend one of the most ingrained "rules" of the church.

Knowing what they are, unless she's got safety pins to hold them in place there's no way she can wear those outfits while wearing garments.

It's sorta like someone saying they're a devout jew and they eat pork all the time.

edit: beaten!

This is insulting on many levels, to both black people and Mormons.

And so, she's not allowed to dress that way then? Well, OK.

Some more evidence that convinces me, personally, that the debates don't matter and are just contrived bullshit for the media:

The questioners will not engage in dialogues with the candidates. "The audience members shall not ask follow-up questions or otherwise participate in the extended discussion, and the audience member's microphone shall be turned off after he or she completes asking the questions."

http://www.slate.com/blogs/weigel/2012/10/15/the_hilarious_debate_rules_protecting_the_candidates_from_real_people.html

Sure they might change the minds of those that don't really follow politics that closely, but those people are not dependable. Obama is going to win because he has the infrastructure in place to get his supporters to the ballot. He can really rack up the points. People that change their minds based on a 90 minute contrived, media tested affair are not worth the effort. It's better to just target people that already support you and help them vote, especially in this partisan time that we live in.

Anybody else following the SC decision on whether to restrict Ohio's early voting?

http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blog...arly-voting-164329115--abc-news-politics.html

Ohio Appeals to Supreme Court on Voting

Three weeks before Election Day, Republican Party leaders in Ohio have asked the Supreme Court to step in and allow the state's early in-person voting restriction to take effect.

Two lower federal courts have ruled in favor of Obama campaign officials who asked for a preliminary injunction against Ohio's law, which allows only military members and their families to vote in person on the three days prior to the election.

The Obama campaign, joined by state Democratic Party officials, had challenged the law, pointing out that all voters had been allowed to vote in that time frame in recent elections.

A three-judge panel of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the Democrats Oct. 5 and said that if local election boards in Ohio allowed early voting from Saturday, Nov. 3 to Monday, Nov. 5, the voting had to be open to all voters.
