On the bright side, there's plenty of national parks nearby I should be able to just drive into for free if the government shuts down!

Didn't the Treasury reject that during the 2011 debt ceiling crisis? What makes you think they'd do it now? I just can't see it happening. 14th Amendment might be more likely.

Sessions looked really distraught, like he didn't really think sticking to defunding Obamacare was a good idea, at the start of the committee meeting.

Nancy Pelosi looks like she's about to cry right now.

This is fucking bad.
Alright, Diablos, settle down. Regardless of what is or isn't on the law books, there isn't going to be a default. Wanna know why? Because letting Congress crash the world economy is not worth being the only virtuous politicians in the apocalypse and getting to say "I told you so" to Congress later. And that's assuming Congress is even stupid enough to push things to that point.

Rick Santorum on Fox right now arguing for House Republicans to be "reasonable" and not shut down the government.

HOLY SHIT

What part of "mint the coin or face global economic apocalypse" wasn't clear?

Ruling out the coin was part of the "break the fever" strategy where Obama wanted to force the GOP to take reasonable votes on normal governing business to see if they decided they liked it. In order to make them take a vote on the debt ceiling, Obama had to rule out all possible alternatives. I understand that toilet training works along these lines as well.

However, since the GOP is apparently completely unwilling to take any more reasonable votes ever, it's time to go back to all the possible alternatives.

Also, during that time Obama was desperate to reach his stupid "grand-bargain", so he had to rule out the coin thing so that libs would find the compromise easier to swallow.

Pelosi says no compromise on even the smallest part of Obamacare not the time to advance policy agenda's.

If the government shuts down and Reid keeps his word, then this is going to get pretty entrenched. Whatever party folds is going to take a hard hit.

Nope, it would just prove how pathetic congress is.

Basically, since congress won't let the treasury take on any more credit, the federal reserve will debit their account now, then credit them later whenever congress finally DOES decide to let them take on more credit. And if they don't, then they'll just continue debiting their account so they have the funds needed to continue operating. And since the money just ping pongs back and forth between the fed and the treasury, it doesn't circulate throughout the economy or cause any inflation or anything.

It's just an accounting trick.

The credit will likely come from the fed and their oodles of bonds. We can skip congress altogether (praise jebus)

I just don't understand what these guys think they're trying to prove. ACA strip will never pass Senate, would never be signed by Pres. Obama... they're just trying to hurt people at this point.

Relevant picture. The proverbial Praetorian guard's been paid, and not by Congress:

The end of the world economy is not coming, Diablos.

Ugh. Why give the GOP any cover on their pet issues for this stuff? Keep it painful so they don't do it again.

This just ensures a shutdown lasts longer.

Can't wait for behind-the-scenes accounts on this farce. Specifically the contraception shit, which allowed democrats to win over even more support.

Sounds like Boehner dropped the conference call, now who knows what their plan is.

King still believes a clean CR is final play and will pass--just wishes it was done sooner, before shutdown theatrics and conference gambit

We only have 10 minutes!

Then again I heard that the official time is 2am?

Boehner's plan consisted of Obama caving. Thats it. Nothing more.

Unlike the previous shutdown, this one is going to be accompanied by tons of personal stories and video online thanks to social media. The impact will be obvious pretty much immediately. Not only are they going to be getting a lot of people angry, but they're giving them a bunch of free time to voice their frustrations. It's going to be a bit different than how the situation was seen by the world in the 90's, before everybody had access to services like facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.

I like Senator Levin's position on this conference thing. Simply vote on the bill the senate sent you and then we'll go to conference or else we don't feel like you're going there in good confidence.

I don't understand the exclamation point. Or the use of "only". Or "official".
Not sure what there is to not understand about the exclamation point. ONLY 10 minutes left is what I meant.

During the committee meeting in the House it was mentioned, if I heard correctly, that this can go to 2am potentially.

Happy Shutdown everyone!

I must say I'm somewhat in shock that it came to this. Farce doesn't begin to describe it.

No no, you're not understanding me. I'm asking you why you're panicked or upset or the like about this. Even if Congress is mad enough to make this explode into a doomsday clusterfuck, it'll take the participation of every single other political organ to permit that happenstance.

Obama learned his lesson in 2011 (thank god), so we're not going to keep doing this (at least, theoretically). Just need to have the public turn on them.

Let me explain. Repubs and their donors won a victory in 2010 partly because they whipped up their paranoid voters into thinking Obama and by extension Obamacare was the great evil. Now they have to either "win" or go back and explain to these people that the socialist government has taken over.
