I'd like to introduce my conservative friends and family members to a little phrase called "We the people" and "government of the people, by the people, for the people."

The government is just us. The people. That's all it is. We make of it the things we value.

The Government is only the people when the Republicans are in office.

Still wish Bams would mint the $1T coin with Reagan on one side and Jesus on the other. Both holding guns.

you know, I just realized something. Not only is Obama hiring thugs to terrorize veterans, but with him shutting down the government he probably killed the bush recovery. No wonder the GOP is threating to default, what other choice do they have.

This Slimdown will no doubt kick the private sector into gear and unemployment will drop immediately. Do we really need the FDA or FEMA? I mean, if people need help they can just get a job.

1. What is the obsession with talking about things being shoved down their throats?

2. Why is State government seen as a noble part of civil society and the Federal government not so?

3. "The government is not America, the people are." I think this is where I disagree with most conservatives. Government is the people working together to define, regulate and enforce the laws and freedoms of civilization. Once again, why is the state government seen as integral but not the Federal government? I thought the US Constitution was the supreme law of the land?

To answer your second question, the people have a lot more individual power in a state government.

You can very easily set up a face to face appointment and talk with your state government's representative and senators, your primary and ballot vote are more likely to mean something in a sea of a million votes instead of a hundred million, and if you want to run for city or state council, it's actually somewhat possible without expensive ivy league college degrees, a personal fortune, and a fortune from lobbyists.

Look at gay marriage and marijuana. Where would we be if the states didn't have the power to break from the rest of the country?

While I understand that powers not delegated to the US are reserved for the states and people, and that states can and should be able to go their own, very different ways, what then is the measure of our civilization? What are its outward signs? And isn't it intertwined with government if not inseparable from it?

Its been something gnawing at me lately. The calls to limit and reduce government. In my head I've changed the terms to limiting and reducing civilization. Limiting and reducing civil society. It makes a lot less sense when you look at the government as society, or as a mechanism communal action.

How the fuck are we going to get off this planet without a larger government? How are we going to solve the big issues that confront humanity if we all live in our own little libertarian hamlets? How do we advance civilization in isolated bubbles?

ps: Feel free to slap me upside the head with a fresh salmon if this comes across as a rant or stream of consciousness. ;P

The state is more under their control. They can get their way white male christians are a [voting] majority (notice how they often disenfranchise the minorities that do live there?). The federal government lets dirty hippies from New York and California impose their nasty ideas of environmental protection, civil rights, gay rights, social safety nets on the free land of red states. And tells them that some of their ideas are wrong.

It's the worst thing since slavery and Hitler combined.

Watch that Santorum clip and compare it to the others, or just about any clip of a conservative talking about gay people or liberals. He emits a visceral level of hatred that you almost never see or hear on a national stage. People like Rick Perry and Michelle Bachman are able to hide their disgust behind a facade, or even a casually dismissive attitude. Santorum has no filter, and I think that's a big reason why - despite his undeniable work for the cause - fundamentalist Christian groups continue ignore him every four years. Even they realize he's too hateful and couldn't possibly win an election.

Man, wtf happened to Rick? When he first ran for office here in PA he would pride himself on being a pro-choice Republican.

Hey, how's the Senate looking for 2014? I'm looking at some polls from Aug/Sept but I can't find anything more recent.

Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Alaska, Montana, West Virginia, South Dakota...

Louisiana will probably stay Democratic, as well as NC, but the new voter laws there aren't going to help Dems. Montana, WV and SD seem like a lost cause. Not sure what to think about Arkansas and Alaska.

Of course if the trend of the GOP looking hideous in polls carries on through next year a lot of amazing things could happen. Fingers crossed.

Collins resigns, Georgia pickup, only lose WV and SD, no net gain /AaronStrifeposts

Polls will probably end up showing dems in the lead by a 20 pt margin in states that were already showing dem leads, with dems in high 40s/low 50s and gops in mid-high20s.

the ones that were previously close are going to look like those august/september numbers for nc senate and virginia governor.

i'm curious to see how the obamacare voter registration is going to affect things. arizona and nebraska are already settig up to discriminate federal voter registration by making people who regitered federally only allowed to vote in federal elections.

Glenn Beck wants to move to Canada

I've always wondered where rich Republican's would actually go if the US got so liberal that they actually had to follow through with their threats.

Canada's a funny choice after being the go to example for why government healthcare doesn't work over the last decade, but I don't know what other english speaking country is more right wing than Canada excluding the US.

It is sort of odd. If, according to the right, Obama is a communist dictator, how bad must those oppressive regimes in Canada and Europe be?

Should we be sending aid to our friends in the United Kingdom? Perhaps I should say comrades.

Australia has just taken a big step to the right.
