If Sanders loses the nomination, is there any serious likelihood of his talking points being carried-on by future candidates? Or would his loss be the final nail in the coffin of American leftism?

Sanders won't be the last person to campaign on wealth inequality. His loss doesn't kill anything.

You are a bit behind.

The final nail in the coffin was the Vietnam War and the death of the Great Society.

I really don't know at what point he became the sole embodiment of US leftism...

So weird.

There were leftists before Bernie, and there will be leftists after Bernie.

My god my Twitter timeline is flat out deflated after the Sanders loss. I have one guy who is now calling Bernie a fraud and wants his donation back. I have another who's disappointed and says they're not going to donate anymore until after they see South Carolina.

Step back from that ledge, my friends.

Jesus, Cruz came in 4th place in Beaufort county.

So Cruz is basically done. He couldn't win the first Southern state, his best states (especially Texas) are proportional, and his worst ones are winner take all. I'd say Rubio is done too, but there's a small chance of a late surge in winner take all states after March 15th. It's unlikely, but still possible. But it's like 80% likely to be Trump by this point.

It's amazing watching Maddow filibuster on MSNBC, talking for minutes, and then interrupt others when it's their turn to talk. Jeez.

She's currently arguing Bush failed in large part due to wasting his PAC money. In reality even if he spent smarter he'd still lose because that PAC money couldn't be used on the things his campaign needed (on the ground resources).

Cult of personality I guess.

To answer the question, Sanders loss does nothing to end the American left. It's getting stronger every year, and maybe by 2024 we'll be ready as a nation for someone like him to have a real shot at the presidency.

Also, he's not hugely further to the left than Clinton in terms of overall position. So there's that.

I think it's interesting according to election betting odds site betfair Clinton didn't get a significant odds bump tonight. I figured with Sanders stalled momentum tonight and with SC/Super Tuesday looking so friendly to Clinton the market would be more bearish on Sanders. I think it's going to be really hard for Sanders campaign to look viable after those sustained beatings. Then again, Sanders has a habit of always tightening these race. The market is way smarter about these things than I am.

The landslide in New Hampshire fooled them into believing he could win.

Rubio is now in almost everyone's sights. Trump, Kasich and Cruz all want to beat him. Hope he is the newest punching bag of the race, couldnt happen to a nicer robot.

I don't know but a huge majority of them are just deflated. Now feeling that his campaign isn't long for this world.

Bitter disappointment is an integral part of political participation. Bernie Sanders will be the first taste of it for a new generation I suppose. Hopefully they get over and keep voting.

I wouldn't count on Kasich going after him. If anyone left is willing to put his own ego on hold to stop Trump, it's probably him. Plus I think he was probably auditioning for VP this whole time anyway.

I mean, it's uniquely ideological rather than technocratic (ymmv on whether this is a good thing). But I don't see why that won't be replicated. I guess in a more crowded field it would get drowned out though.

Even John Edwards' rhetoric had a lot in common. Bernie has shown that there are votes to be found with this messaging, we'll see someone try to recapture it in the next Democratic Presidential primary.

More bet fair posting: In other news, they are super bearish on Cruz after tonight. He didn't lock up evangelicals in SC and he has a math problem.
The only way Cruz could win the nomination now is if Trump or Rubio dropped out. So yeah, he's dead.

Depends on in just what ways you're right wing.

If its about economics and the role of government and such, well, expect some arguing but yeah you're pretty welcome, we've got a couple others.

If its because of opinions about gay people and such there may not be a way to express it that meets the standards of "respectful" here

Regardless, welcome

Don't care about the gay issue in regards to government oversight. Two free thinking adults should be able to do whatever the hell they want as long as it affects no one else whether it have to do with gay rights, weed, ect.

Mostly libertarian on social issues save Abortion. Not going into that right now but my argument against it is not the religious argument.

Very strongly right in terms of economic policy. I believe in the free market and I believe that punishing success and redistribution of wealth is not a long term strategy for success. That being said regualtion and closing of tax loopholes for the wealth is both reasonable and necessary.

I think Trump is a death sentence for the republicans and that Ted Cruz is a fraud and a fake and it disgusts me an an evangelical that he claims to represent us. I personally am supporting Marco Rubio.

RIP to Jeb! is a mess.

I hope Vic Berger has one final tribute video in the works. I'll honestly miss Jeb, he was probably the most likable guy in the GOP slate because of just how nerdy and weird he was, and probably would have been a better president than his brother, in a different reality. (Not that that's that difficult to achieve, but whatever.)

I'd argue that Sanders is most unusual because leftists generally cannot achieve national office in America. Vermont is one of the only states who could produce such a candidate (alongside Colorado and potentially the Upper Midwest), and Sanders has the benefit of running against a bevy of candidates unable to attract young voters.

My hope is that Sanders' young voters somehow keep an interest in his brand of soft socialism, and vote for increasingly left legislators. But I don't know how likely that is, given that much of Sanders' appeal comes from personality rather than ideology.

Why would Rubio be a good buy for Nevada? Trump has actually been polling better there than NH and SC. There's only 2.5 days for the media to slobber all over the establishment boy.

Young people under 29 are only like 15-17% of people that actually vote.

That percentage will increase as they age like it has for every other generation.

Rubio is so confident that he's going right to Tennessee and Arkansas to campaign next.

Just got home from dinner, but why is Cruz on TV giving a speech like he won?

E: apparently it's not live, but question still stands.
