At the risk of sounding ignorant myself, aren't most of the people that would avoid voting for Obama because he's black, basically ignorant rednecks who were going to vote for mccain anyways?

Sadly, no.

Baltimore Sun said:
WASHINGTON - Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks - many calling them "lazy," "violent" or responsible for their own troubles.

The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 - about 2.5 percentage points.

Certainly, Republican John McCain has his own obstacles: He's an ally of an unpopular president and would be the nation's oldest first-term president. But Obama faces this: 40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks, and that includes many Democrats and independents.

More than a third of all white Democrats and independents - voters Obama can't win the White House without - agreed with at least one negative adjective about blacks, according to the survey, and they are significantly less likely to vote for Obama than those who don't have such views.

"There are a lot fewer bigots than there were 50 years ago, but that doesn't mean there's only a few bigots," said Stanford political scientist Paul Sniderman, who helped analyze the exhaustive survey.

The pollsters set out to determine why Obama is locked in a close race with McCain even as the political landscape seems to favor Democrats. President Bush's unpopularity, the Iraq war and a national sense of economic hard times cut against GOP candidates, as does that fact that Democratic voters outnumber Republicans.

The findings suggest that Obama's problem is close to home - among his fellow Democrats, particularly non-Hispanic white voters. Just seven in 10 people who call themselves Democrats support Obama, compared to the 85 percent of self-identified Republicans who back McCain.

Lots of Republicans harbor prejudices, too, but the survey found they weren't voting against Obama because of his race. Most Republicans wouldn't vote for any Democrat for president.

Not all whites are prejudiced. Indeed, more whites say good things about blacks than say bad things, the poll shows. Many whites who see blacks in a negative light are still willing or even eager to vote for Obama.

On the other side of the racial question, the Illinois Democrat is drawing almost unanimous support from blacks, the poll shows, though that probably wouldn't be enough to counter the negative effect of some whites' views.

Race is not the biggest factor driving Democrats and independents away from Obama. Doubts about his competency loom even larger, the poll indicates. More than a quarter of all Democrats expressed doubt that Obama can bring about the change they want, and they are likely to vote against him because of that.

Three in 10 of those Democrats who don't trust Obama's change-making credentials say they plan to vote for McCain.

Still, the effects of whites' racial views are apparent in the polling. Statistical models derived from the poll suggest that Obama's support would be as much as 6 percentage points higher if there were no white racial prejudice.

But in an election without precedent, it's hard to know if such models take into account all the possible factors at play.

The AP-Yahoo poll interviewed people online after randomly selecting and screening them over the telephone. Numerous studies have shown that people are more likely to report embarrassing behavior and unpopular opinions when answering questions on a computer rather than talking to a stranger.

The survey of 2,227 adults was conducted Aug. 27 to Sept. 5. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.

McCain Invokes Power of Satan to Change Washington

MEDIA, PA — “Sarah and I are going to get on that chopper and ride it right to Washington and raise hell when we get there,” McCain told about 10,000 supporters in suburban Philadelphia today upon being presented with a customized bike by the crew from Orange County Choppers.

Paul Teutul Sr. and sons built the customized bike to commemorate POWs and MIAs and honor McCain’s service as a POW.

McCain’s vow to ride to Washington and “raise hell” came at the same rally he rebuked Obama for lacking a plan to address the economic crisis.

“Senator Obama has declined to put forth a plan of his own. I’m not surprised. His campaign said that today he’d outline his plan, but this afternoon instead of offering a single solution, he just gave another speech full of political attacks,” McCain said. “One week after this crisis began, Senator Obama has still not offered any plan of any kind. The time of crisis when leadership is needed, Senator Obama has been M.I.A. my friends, that means Missing in Action.”

If, if, if. Regardless of the circumstances, he's still polling at 50%. That wins you an election, even if it isn't 56%.

Wait....so what's McCain's plan?

What do you do if your economic advisor, Mr. Mental Recession himself, is culprit number one, and the only other economist you've heard of is culprit number two?

You get your fucking ass handed to you in the last debate, that's what.

Blame it on greed and...Greenspan?

Let me get this straight: Italy's finance minister is blaming, and comparing to Osama bin Laden, the leader of the greatest US market in a century, for a problem that is in the hands of his successor? And don't get me started on the socialist Frogs.

Greenspan is certainly partly to blame. And please DO get started on the "socialist Frogs" - I'm sure your position would be well-reasoned, articulate, and genre-defining.

Yeah well, as I said in the econogaf thread listening to the BBC you get the feeling that Europe is mostly like "So let me get this straight. You deregulated the banking industries, had no issue with credit ratings firms getting paid by the very people they were supposed to be rating and then you have a market collapse? Really? You don't say?"

All I know is that I'm an economic centrist who believes that the best system is a free market with necessary restrictions to control corporations and greedy stockbrokers and the like who have too much freedom in the anarchic system under the Bush Administration. I have equal disdain for a command system Eastern European countries are experimenting with. I find it too predictable that France would use this moment to announce the death of capitalism. It will continue to live on like it has for the last 1000 years.

And then bury the tax payers as you bail out the companies that imploded?

Jolly good show.

That poll is bullshit.

It may be a bit off but I guarantee the number of individuals who harbor negative feelings towards blacks or minorities in general is alarmingly significant.

Today was a mess. I'd expect the DJ to go down just as bad the rest of the week, especially since it only went up when Paulson asked for the 700 Bil w/no strings attached. Now, it's going to get worse because there's probably no way it's going to pass in its original form.

We really are fucked. Bad.

In my opinion that is a good thing. $700 billion with no accountability whatsoever for what they did in the first place? No thank you.

Pretty solid polling day.

Where is Obama polling well? In Virginia and North Carolina, where he gets a couple of very strong numbers today. Both SurveyUSA and the ABC/Post poll show him with a lead outside of the margin of error in Virginia, although the latter depends on just which version of the poll you use (we use the registered voter version with third-party candidates included; as of next week, we'll switch over to the likely voter versions). And in North Carolina, Civitas confirms PPP's finding from yesterday and shows the race as a dead heat. Rasmussen is more tepid on both states, but still, the trend on balance is favorable for Obama in this part of the country.

Virginia is now projecting very slightly ahead of Obama's national trendline, and would seem to represent a better pickup opportunity for him than Ohio. I'd assume that the Obama campaign is fairly pleased with that, because this is a state where they overperformed during the primaries, where they have Tim Kaine in the governor's mansion, and where the Republicans don't have quite as much of a ground game, as they are not used to having to defend the state in Presidential cycles (remember, John McCain is mostly relying on George W. Bush's scraps from 2004).

So where isn't Obama polling so well? In Ohio and Pennsylvania, where his numbers remain sluggish. While Obama would very probably win Pennsylvania if the election were held today -- he ticked up a couple of points in Rasmussen's numbers -- it has gradually moved toward Obama's national averages. What that means is that if the national numbers revert to a tie, Pennsylvania may be vulnerable, which is why it has moved up and now rates as the most important tipping point state.

I’m proud to announce today that the HSLF board of directors—which is comprised of both Democrats and Republicans—has voted unanimously to endorse Barack Obama for President. The Obama-Biden ticket is the better choice on animal protection, and we urge all voters who care about the humane treatment of animals, no matter what their party affiliation, to vote for them

Well Palin co-authored the plan. Essentially they are going to physically raise hell so that God will not want to hug us so closely. Leading to the end of global warming (in theory, hell is likely to warm things up...). As far as his plan for the financial crisis, I think that has been laid out as "shaking things up".

Palin accuses 'Obama-Biden Democrats' of spreading 'lies'

(CNN)— Governor Sarah Palin accused “Obama-Biden Democrats,” of launching a series of unfair attacks against her and her family in a fundraising email sent to supporters Monday.

“Friends, in the course of a few weeks, the Obama-Biden Democrats have launched attack after attack on me, my family and John McCain,” Palin writes in the email. “They’re desperate to win and they’ll no doubt launch these attacks against other reformers on our ticket.”

Watch: Obama says discussion of Sarah Palin's family is 'off-limits'

Earlier this month, the McCain campaign said its $47 million fundraising record for the month of August was due in large part to the addition of the Alaska governor to the ticket. Her presence on the campaign trail has also translated into larger crowds at campaign events throughout the country.

Palin said Obama and Biden have a “large financial advantage,” urging supporters that a contribution of any size will help stop the spread of “lies” and “misinformation” coming from Democrats.

“We must stop them,” Palin writes, “…before they turn these shameful tactics on others we support.”

Earlier this month when Obama was asked about Bristol Palin’s pregnancy, the Illinois senator repeated previous calls that “people’s families are off-limits.”

“This shouldn’t be part of our politics,” Obama said “It has no relevance to show Governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president.”

That poor, poor woman. I've never heard of attacks in politics before.

But what percentage of that 3/10ths of "independents" aren't already decidedly McCain voters in polling data?

It is trying to imply some kind of Bradley effect by then at the end of it says that they expect it to equal 6 points of current polling difference.

It also misses out on just how successful Obama has been selling himself as a non-racial candidate.

Palin lawyer meets with TOTALLY BOGUS investigator in TOTALLY BOGUS probe

Palin/McCain has launched a parallel probe into Troopergate with a Personnel Board made up of people hired by Palin. What a total fucking farce.

Palin lawyer meets with investigator in probe
By MATT VOLZ Matt Volz – 30 mins ago
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Less than a week after balking at the Alaska Legislature's investigation into her alleged abuse of power, Gov. Sarah Palin on Monday indicated she will cooperate with a separate probe run by people she can fire.

An attorney for the GOP vice presidential nominee met with an investigator for the state Personnel Board to discuss sharing documents and schedule witness interviews, McCain spokeswoman Meg Stapleton said. Neither she nor McCain spokesman Ed O'Callaghan had further details about the meeting and said they did not know if the governor or her husband would be interviewed.

Palin attorney Thomas Van Flein said in an e-mail that information on who will be interviewed and when will be known on Tuesday. He said additional coordination meetings with the investigator, Anchorage attorney Timothy Petumenos, are likely.

After that, however, Petumenos wants to keep the progress of the investigation confidential and the campaign will not have any further comment, McCain spokesman Taylor Griffin said.

Both the Legislature and the personnel board have hired investigators in separate inquiries of whether Palin abused her power when she fired Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan this summer. Monegan refused to dismiss a state trooper who went through a bitter divorce with her sister before Palin's became governor.

Palin has refused to participate in the Legislature's investigation since becoming Sen. John McCain's running mate.

The other investigation is overseen by the state Personnel Board, a three-member panel appointed by the governor. Panel members can be fired by the governor for cause. Two members are holdovers from the previous governor and Palin reappointed the third.

One, Alfred Tamagni Sr., donated $400 to Palin's 2006 campaign. Petumenos has donated money to several Democratic candidates.

Separately, two Alaska Democrats said they may bring witness tampering allegations against the McCain-Palin campaign. The two state lawmakers, Rep. Les Gara and Sen. Bill Wielechowski, said they are evaluating Alaska's criminal code to see if it applies in what's become known as the Troopergate probe.

Griffin said the campaign has not advised any witnesses on how to respond to subpoenas

Maybe the plan was supposed to be...

1> Hold the investigation off until after the election.
2> Use the Power of Palin to win the election.
3> Throw her under the troopergate bus.
4> Welcome, VP Lieberman!
