MSNBC finally gets a clue and sets up their cameras when they have a show in the open with a crowd so that the signs behind them are blurred out and unreadable.

Absolutely not :D

I think the next debate (economy) is going to be ugly for McCain.

It seems like Obama lost the FP debate, but trounced him so hard on the economy that it outweighed the FP part of it.

Mathews hammering McCain on his stance that we have to continue every war we ever start and it should never end until every political and military achievement was reached.

"It wasn't dishonorable when Eisenhower went to Korea and ended that war."

"McCain is wrong, and demonstrably wrong."

Holy shit,

Matthews is going off on McCain saying soldiers lives are wasted if you dont win the war.

I think he is right, I didnt think about that, but he may have stepped in it there.

Obama kinda made that point about not politicizing the troops.

Maybe it's because I have facial agnosia and missed things like eye contact that I felt McCain won. I suspect that Obama's win in the polls tonight is in the same category as the fact that an overwhelming majority of the time the taller candidate wins. But who knows, really.

Things Methane47 has taken away from the debate.

Code:
1) McCain is a chronic liar who repeats lies that Obama pretty much JUST refuted right in
front of his face. e.g. Precondition != preparation

2) McCain cannot pronounce Ammedin.ah..ne jad? shoot I can't even spell that crap.

3) When McCain is faced with a tough question he chooses you JiggilyPuff.. and tells us all a
long winded story that puts us to sleep. eg (wtf did his ankle braclet have to do with the freakin question?)

4) Obama's stuttering kinda annoys me sometimes... But McCain's little giggle laugh crap he
does just makes me upset.

The next debate is a town hall.

What is that weird little white dot on the inside of Obama's bottom lip?
It's the poorly concealed speaker that Biden was going to use to whisper choice words in his ear, but thanks to the economic crisis they don't have the financial resources to execute the plan.

Matthews is pretty clear with what he thinks of the debate.

I like Matthews when he's fired up so much more than when he's tepid.

I don't know if you guys saw the analysis after the debate on CNN, but things look really, really, really, really, really, really bad for McCain. The major of pundits and those polled think Obama won, and Obama polled better across ALL demographics. And ALL demographics, including Republicans, think Obama is going to win. It's pretty incredible.

I didn't catch most of the debate, but from what I saw, it was pretty ho-hum, with both landing some punches.

I think he is wrong about Obama getting fired up, people want someone who is cool, calm, collected and reassuring in economic crisis. He can say he knows what their plight is, but then say "look, I got this"

Oh incidentally I thought it was great how Obama answered the exact opposite question to "what will you cut?" and McCain talked about pork-barrel spending some more. Lehrer was asking excellent questions and trying to get them to talk to each other and they would have none of it.

To be honest, I don't know if that's completely due to the debate. EVERYBODY is very down on Palin right now.

Except Hannity.

Full impressions tomorrow

While trying to be impartial, unbiased etc...I don't see how anyone could argue Obama did not win that debate. He beat McCain on every issue, every talking point. He looked presidential. Polls seem to agree but we'll see later this weekend. I think the public will say Obama won.

It reminded me of that debate where Hillary came out the box attacking Obama over and over again - except this time it was Obama attacking McCain over and over again. He played defense when he had to, but was on offense 90% of the time. McCain didn't even use his own talking points well. On Iran he didn't use the same language his ads do (tiny country, etc). He was pushing the wrong buttons at the same time, most evident at the end where he was sprouting buzz words - surge, naive, etc.

Obama won

Everyone I know, and have spoken to in Toronto since the debate ended feel Obama easily won. Yet many Americans, think Mccain and his history lesson, and rants about non applicable wars that happened 20+ years ago won.

Loved the part where McCain showcased his bracelet from a kia soldier's mom and Obama says right after that he's got a bracelet too. Fantastic.

Overall, Obama wins on the issues and being presidential. He will win the election.

At times, Obama did a poor job deflecting McCain's attacks. Even though he was very pointed on the facts, he needed to come up with more succinct and sharp counter arguments. On substance, Obama won no doubt. Here's the problem: American Presidential debates really aren't about substance. They're about making your opponent look bad. Had Obama seized the moment, I believe that McCain would have been toast. And given McCain's illustrious ill-tempered demeanor, make that burnt toast.
I think making a declarative statement such as that about what *all* American presidential debates are about is worthless generalization. It would certainly depend on the context of issues at the time of the particular elections whether Americans would be more interested in substance or in putdowns. Where we are now, and given the way the polls are trending, it would certainly appear that a majority *do* want substance in these presidential debates and have responded to it favorably thus far.

There's two more debates to go, and McCain is already slipping into cranky mode right out of the gate. As far as attacking your opponent goes, I think you're shortshrifting some of the credit Obama deserves here.

It's funny hearing McCain proclaiming that Obama was wrong on such issues as Russia v. Georgia, but somehow McCain should be absolved of being a complete fuck-up in regards to Iraq.

That was an example of how I thought Obama was just reacting, being defensive instead of offensive. You liked that? He just kept pushing the ball back into McCain's court, evening it out, when he could have made a decisive blow.

I'm actually looking forward to the VP debate and I'm not even American; thats Oct 2 right?

I'm looking forward to the following Hannity & Colmes even more than that :lol

Obama hammering McCain with the "you were wrong going into Iraq" bit was fucking great. That is the moment of this debate, and it was gigantic.

Biden was vicious and on point. I would be looking forward to that debate, for sure, except that it's such a horrible mismatch it may not even be funny. Palin couldn't take fifteen minutes of softball questioning, how will she handle an hour with Biden?

It was quite obnoxious how McCain never looked at Obama.
