PS3 Firmware 1.90 (XMB Backgrounds, order game listing, chg vid settings in-game)

there's nothing to lol about :lol

if you buy a Samsung set you can be sure that you'll need a couple of firmware updates before having almost all the issues sorted out :lol

damn you Samsung, damn you!

i'll have to upgrade the firmware on my set too. one issue is the lack of 24Hz in the EDID infos as Blim said. another problem is that a shitty function called "Movie Plus" keeps enabling itself when you switch the input source on the TV, even if that same feature is reported to be disabled in the settings! (but you can clearly see it's enabled)

basically every time i switch the input (from HDMI to TV or component for example) i have to enable and then disable again that "movie plus" thing in the menu to truly disable it... mhe...

:)

Where do you get these firmware updates? (Samsung tele's)

Guess you are right, all i could find is download manuals on their site.

damn...they should make this easier for the consumer, just like updating dvd drivers firmware.

Either ingame XMB or custom backgrounds or both.
That's hot.

not yet. just booted up and wasn't prompted. Website still lists 1.82 as well.

the website usually is always late. you will get it via PS3 way before the website.

and i cant wait for the wallpaper to add to my ps3

I've got a feeling (as per the Fl0w pic above) that this isn't just static JPG backgrounds. Games that only use the sixaxis movements, eg Fl0w and Loco Roco, will probably be fully interactive backgrounds.

Which would be awesome.

My wording was confusing, I meant booted up my PS3 and checked and it wasn't there yet. After that I checked the website, and it wasn't there either.

Forcing 24-bit BD output is not going to matter if your TV cannot change its scan rate which is the case for most sets out :(

Which is why I don't quite understand that addition.

My TV does accept 1080p24 and it works perfectly fine as it is. What does this feature bring to the table? Does it force content that is not 24 Hz to display as such (wouldn't make sense)?

Some TVs don't pick up on the signal automatically from the PS3, this will force it.

I doubt that custom soundtracks is going to make it into any firmware update to be retroactive to launch games / older games.

I think, however, that Sony has put it in their SDK and perhaps may be requiring it as a part of their certification process? This would explain why the games at E3 had them, as it was probably build into the game itself, accessible via the PS button. I don't think it was a firmware feature.

What I'm more curious about is why all the Kiosks around the US have a 'chat room' feature on their XMB, and why we don't.

Yeah my Pioneer 40inch accepts 1080p/24 even though it's a 720p set. But it's not picking up the signal from my PS3 so hopefully it'll work now. Sure I won't get the great detail that 1080p offers but having the right refresh rate would be nice.

it only sends 24fps content at 24fps if the source material is 24fps
the problem before was that on automatic setting the ps3 would poll the tv if it supports 24fps, and on some tvs while they supported 1080p/24 they didn't 'answer' the ps3 properly so the ps3 kept outputting at 30

what does that mean?

I think it mean you can rearrange the list as A-Z or customise.

P.S. I have check with my PS3, the music and video are already arranged A-Z but not for game folder. So maybe?

Ah, true... Prepare for VOD in the future or some demo games like HS or NGS might not good for young kiddies.

I've seen people who had to force 24hz out of their HTPCs in order for their set to pick it up. The PS3 with 24hz set to auto just output at 30fps on those sets.

Also some Samsung LCDs will display that it's getting a 1080p24 source be render at 1080p30 anyway. I'm not sure if any non-120hz LCD can do 24hz. I think most plasmas can do 24hz.

What about the ability to listen to music while watching a photo slideshow or whatever?

this feature is available since day 1 :)

play music ---> push the home button ----> select image folder -----> start a slideshow ---> enjoy !

These are some very nice additions, especially being able to rearrange items on the XMB. It's not in-game XMB access or custom soundtracks yet, but they're getting closer.

Also, thanks for the Wallpaper thread, there are some sweet pics up there.

...you can do that now. Press the PS Button while your music or slideshow is already playing, then just go to the other section.

This better have the ability to just disable the day to night background color theme thing. I like the changing colors (a la PSP), but hate that they fade to black (since I only play at night).

Yeah, I get such a shock on a Saturday morning when it's bright green or whatever, the XMB looks gorgeous with a splash of colour behind it.

Great update, specially the PS2 settings while playing. The eject feature is a good bonus.
Don't forget Sony, I want to stream my own music while playing.

Wow, I had no idea! Well thanks for confirming my idiocy.

A little bit OT...
Quick question for the PS3's owners with a JAP/HK/CHI account.

Do you still see the Minna no golf 5 Demo on the Store or it is confirmed they deleted it?

Thanks!!!

a lot of TV's have this support broken and cant recognize when PS3 sends them 24hz signal, even though they support 24hz... so no it will be forced, even if TV cant tell PS3 that it supports 24hz properly... for a lot of people this will finally enable such feature.

i have the LE46M86 with the samen problem as Blimblim so the Force 24Hz output for Blu-ray over HDMI is awesome, so happy i am

Why not ? Who confirmed that ?

It sucks that Europeans can play Japanese dvds, but Japanese can't play European dvds.

I could be wrong, but imho you wont see it since PAL DVDs are 576p while NTSC DVDs are 480p. The JPN PS3 supports Region2 DVDs, but still has no option to set 576i/p output and that could be why PAL DVDs aren't supported.

i have the 40" model. great set but Samsung is really bad when it comes to firmware. they're full of bugs! you'll probably have the same bug i was talking about in my last post.

here in Italy they seems to have no problem with firmware upgrades. and it's covered by warranty also.

once Samsung is done with a new release and the repair center near you gets it they'll do the upgrade. of course if it's reported to fix the problem you're complaining about.

have you tried calling Samsung directly?

:)
Dozens have people have tried, but Samsung France simply sucks with that whole firmware thing.

It's not there any more. If you didn't get it, you're SOL but the full game comes out this Thursday in Japan if you happen to be so inclined.

Cross game invites, THEN custom soundtraks. :)

That won't happen. Ever. Home is going to take that priority, so unless you log into Home and play that way, you'll probably never see Cross game invites. I just don't see it happening any time soon.
