PS4 has 8 GB OF GDDR5 RAM

One thing I should mention, and people would know if they were watching the GT live stream post conference is what EPIC's Mark Rein said about the RAM situation. He made the analogy of Sony answering their love letter. It could mean great things down the line for Sony especially when it comes to running games built on UE4.

I saw that too. He said PS 4 is the perfect fit for them and UE 4 and it seemed he dissed MS with how he said it (someone answered our love letter (demo)).

Current gen corridor simulation has evolved into cave simulation. Not as impressive due to the small scope shown in the trailer, but I agree it was one of the best looking for sure.

Oh come on, since when has that been a thing?

We saw what we saw, and it looked better than anything else. I think Uncharted 3 looks much better than GTA, it doesn't matter if it has big levels or not.

My eyes were literally doubting at times what they were seeing, that didn't happen with the Killzone video, even though it looks really great.

8Gb of ram even if high speed is worthless if you don't have the processor and GPU to take advantage of it.

From what i can see the current ps3 cpu is much faster than the ps4 cpu. It absolutely smokes it in number crunching terms

And since the memory has increased by 16 times you would expect 16 times the bandwidth of the ps3. However the ps4 bandwidth is 176GBs.

Not that impressive

My biggest concern is the pricing now... I have a feeling Sony will puff out the chest and launch at $499 (especially if the camera does come included with the machine). It has to be $399 or less. I just can't see them being able to go out after the PS3 humiliation and seriously tell everyone that it will be that price.

Subsidized pricing incoming. $199 with a 3 year PS+ subscription.

Sorry for not wading through 11 pages of "HOLLY SHIT I DID NOT EXPECT THIS", but is this actually confirmed, or is everyone going off them saying "fast" memory?

its in actual sony published documents. its subject to change but currently that's what they're aiming for.

Some special sauce may help the crow go down easier...

I must say, I'm impressed at how far Sony went. Not only does the so-called GAF experts/MS fans have crow to eat, but even certain cocky middleware devs (cough *Crytek* cough) that, just a few days ago, thought their game was soo visually untouchable.

That said, I think people should wait to see what Microsoft have to offer before considering them "beaten." I personally want to see real gameplay of some of the more impressive stuff like Capcom's Deep Down. I don't want another Killzone 2-esque burn, if you know what I mean. (and no, I'm not questioning the Killzone: Shadow Fall in partiuclar)

Is the same gonna be true for PS4 though?

I mean past PlayStation systems have used custom hardware. Are we going to really see that generational jump throughout the life cycle continue like you displayed above for the PS3 or will the "power be unlocked" much quicker for the PS4 than previous Sony systems?

Same is true for the Xbox 360, which was also similar to PC, so yeah why not?

dude this is just sad.

i was buffed by almost everyone . almost all companies release info to their big investors prior to any reveal or any announcement

now what if i tell everyone that MS showed next box and almost every investor was unimpressed. Now they are planning to change specs even with a 6 months delay???

you all saw KZ PS4...now show me something that impressive on PC

Ummm....are you saying that this has actually happened?

So they announce 8GB now, but then the initial PS3 reveal years ago had double somethings of what we got like 2 HDMIs, 2 Lan ports etc. Maybe at launch it's back to 4GB. lol

My god, I was impressed by 4gb of gddr5 then sony blows my mind by doubling it.

Thats the most foolish comparison I've heard in quite some time, good job.

For starters it's not the same memory, it runs at much lower clockspeed (better yields since you don't need to cherrypick parts stable at higher voltage) and has much lower bandwidth in ps4.

Second of all a hd6670 with 2GB gddr5 costs 67 euros at retail with 21 percent sales tax here. And most of the cost of that card is the gpu, PCB and cooler.

Nvidia make like 800 dollars profit on every titan sold, it's a garbage comparison.

Good point. Didn't think of that. Maybe it's not that much of a pipedream afterall?

Yeah man, not only is it 8 GB, but its mother fuckin GDDR5. This is the first generation of consoles I've ever seen where the RAM is at the sweet spot. All other consoles ever have been RAM starved.

800 dollar profit? Man, there is nothing I would like to see more than Nvidia make their own console. Price it at break even and throw a Titan in there.

Did they say how much was given to games? :) 2GB incoming!

Seriously though, even if it gets 6, texture wise can the machine actually consume that much?

Once again, pertaining to price, if Sony has planned to swap out GDDR5 for DDR3/4 with wider bus (1024 bit) and stacking down the line then the costs will reeled in significantly in the first few years post launch.

My god, I was impressed by 4gb of gddr5 then sony blows my mind by doubling it.

Imagine how everyone else feel. We all are psychologically prepared for 4GB (and less than that around 3.5GB for game development). And then comes this curve ball.

This is the attitude Nintendo should have taken with the WiiU.

Sony would have been ok with 4gb of DDR5 Ram, but they doubled it for insurance. Had Nintendo taken the same approach, and tried to make the WiiU undoubtedly the technological superior to the PS3, they might have had a better chance of surviving.

Did you see Square Enix and Capcom's presentations, focused primarily on graphical fidelity?

You know what, Square Enix should first prove they can ship finished products (Final Fantasy Versus XIII anyone?) before they EVEN THINK about getting to work on games that utilize the Luminous Engine.

Square Enix is done, I'm telling you.

And Capcom, well, they did some great stuff with their MT Framework Engine, so they may be able to get some good games out. I still think PS4 development will be a risky move for them.

This really, really extends the longevity of the device. Bravo to Sony for pulling the trigger on 8GB on RAM, and thank the capitalist gods for letting RAM be cheap enough right now for this to happen.

Doesn't even come close.

I am more excited than anyone about 8 GB GDDR 5 (8 GB GDDR5! Hear that StevieP?) than anyone, but you really don't want to start comparing Jaguar to a modern Intel PC CPU. It wouldn't be pretty.

That is true. Still we saw Agni demo, Killzone demo, Infameous demo (confirmed in engine) and dat Capcom demo running.

Those kind of demos would require 680 and best CPUs. Looks like they really nailed literally down overhead with their architecture. Totally unified one pool of fast ram in which you can load almost all data or even whole game.

Those 2TF looks reaaaaly strong.
No one expected to see Killzone live demo with that much quality behind it even before alpha.

Those 3TF+ cards on PC just weeps from not being used to full extend imo.

Capcom demo was glorious imo.

Abso-fuckin'-lutely. Honestly not worried about Durango's RAM situation after this, because they know what they're dealing with now and they can easily compensate, upgrade, or redesign. Mark my words, it will be equivalent.

Sounds just like when it was said PS4 wont have this type of ram with this much. Microsoft is pursuing different venues friend.
This is quite an impressive achievement.

Yeah 8 GB GDDR5 was the real game changer of this conference, considering that games like GOW3 run on only 256mb of VRAM I can only imagine what will developers do with 20x+ the amount of VRAM.

So, this means a jump in PC hardware as well, right? The avg has been based around 1-2gb ddr3?

And $10 on Bethesda still finding a way to make PS4 ports < 10fps.

The RAM is crazy, and I shudder to think how much this bad boy will cost. Getting one, day one, obviously.

It will be interesting to eventually hear when this RAM size was finalised by Sony. All the recent rumours were spot on about everything else, yet were so off the mark for memory. Folks claiming insider knowledge and stating the PS4 would have 4GB probably did so in good faith, based on old info.

How old that info was is key. I can't see that end of 2013 would be an achievable target if Sony changed specs so significantly in the past few weeks. These specs must have been final in the latter part of 2012. Else manufacturing the console would see big delays and yield issues, meaning that a 2013 launch was unfeasible.

You were right and it's awesome .
Still surprise that we did not see the consoles since you said investor did .
But yeah people should eat crow because you were right .

Im scared GAF. The price .... the price will kill us.

Although it was rumored that PS3 was over $800 to manufacture at launch.

NOT EVEN CLOSE

Actually in that frantic motion (with so much smoke n mirrors) it looks very good and somewhat close. We are comparing a 5th year game in the hands of graphical gurus of GG with a pre-alpha game which may have been built around older specs (the jump to 8GB or more importantly over 4GB for game development) pretty recently if EDGE had it right.

As blow away as I am, it will be amazing to see what they pull off with titles far away from launch.
