PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Running off of Custom Firmware
Thanks for the confirmation that the 3.80 M33 version of POPSLoader works with 3.90 M33. I had asked about it before but noticed no response.

Are the supposed problems in 3.80 M33 fixed in 3.90 M33? I downgraded to 3.71 M33 last night because playing Dragon Quest VII caused my Slim to hang.

3.80 POPS cannot handle DQVII. It has a roughly 9 in 10 chance of hanging when trying to reload your saves! :lol

However, using the 3.80 M33 version of POPSLoader to play DQVII on POPS 3.72 is a winning combination. Personally, I'm using the 3.71 M33 version of POPSLoader to play DQVII on POPS 3.72. That works too. I'm at 135 hours in, and I've fully completed the main story and the first bonus dungeon. Gonna wrap up the second bonus dungeon this weekend, and finally put the game to rest. (Grandia's next!) :D

Can someone please explain to me what the heck popsloader is? How it works, and how the heck can I put PSX games on my PSP. I haven't played PSX games on it since 3.03OE? And even then it was parasite eve and Xenogears.

Any links to tools, tutorials, etc would be appreciated.

Pops is just sonys ps1 emulator as far as I can see. Mej walked me through the process of it, you basically have to take your disc and make a bin file out of it, then convert it into an eboot if I recall. It's a simple buy tedious process.

I took my copy of megaman X4 on the road for the first time.. heaven :D I also got sonys extended battery kit so it last a long while.

what tools do I use to convert to eboots? and can they be compressed?

Here is a handy tutorial for converting your PS1 CDs to Eboots, thanks to an earlier post by Mejilan: http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/about63658.html&p=1

I shall provide you with my full and varied understanding of the entire POPS thing right here:

POPS files (certain prx's from other firmwares) allow us to play PS1 games on our PSPs. However, different firmwares have different POPS files and these have varying support for games. (For example, a FFVII multi-disc Eboot that would work fine in 3.72 POPS crashes at the first battle of 3.80 POPS as support was dropped for it in that firmware.)

What the POPSLoader plugin does is very clever, as it allows you to gather a load of the POPS files, which are stored on your memory card, and actually use those to boot the game if there is dodgy support from the POPS files in flash (basically the POPS files for that firmware). With the prx's in place (the readme with whatever POPSLoader version you have will tell you where to bung your prx's) and the POPSLoader plugin installed and enabled, we can go back to our example of that FFVII Eboot now, and hold down the R trigger whilst it boots to launch a small menu where you can choose which POPS files to run it with, so instead of the usual "run from flash", we can choose 3.72 and it would run with the 3.72 POPS fine. Different games run differently on different POPS files, so it's always good to get as many files as you can and testing them out.

You can download the POPSLoader from Dark Alex's site, and I recommend googling "Popsloader Files" and seeing what you come up with for the prx's.

Furthermore, I would like to stress the importance of searching on GAF and whatever forums the rabbit hole takes you, as this stuff has been covered so many times in so many places.

Does anyone know how one can rearrange the order the games appear in from the memory stick? I want to have my emulators on top. :(
Change the datestamp on the folders (or is it the .pbp? I forget). You can set folder dates into the future, too to keep things on top. I do that with Bookr because I always want it's icon on top.

You can use a program like the one that was just linked or just use something like SetFileDate: http://no-nonsense-software.com/freeware/

hey, guys. does anybody know how to change the picture of the eboot files. for example that gpSP icon looks really ugly and I want to change it.

Search for a program named PBP unpacker.

PicoDrive looks great for me now.

Popstation is the whole reason why I can't enjoy my PSP fully. In order to get certain games to work, you have to be using specific ID numbers, on certain versions of POPS, etc. What a nightmare. It doesn't help that every time a new firmware comes out, things seem to get a little more complicated.

My copy of Chrono Cross is an .img file. I'm hearing I need to change the ID of the game, but supposedly you can only change the ID of a .bin file. This is where I start to lose my mind.

Why do you need to change the ID? Just try it with different POPS versions. Seriously, the POPStation plugin is surprisingly easy once you get all the prx's, and you can try the different POPS files incredibly easily.

Chrono Cross is a well known issue, when it comes to POPS compatibility. If the fellow searches online, there's a complete FAQ on how to get it running properly.

Right, but with .bin files. I suppose there is no way to change the IDs of my .img files. I've never played this game. Must...play...

So a friend helped my upgrade to CFW3.80 m-33-5. Seemed cool. Everything works right. Memsticks have no problems. So big whoop! It's the same as CFW3.40rOAE, which has great.

My situation. I play a ton of EMU' Learning the history of video gaming as it's spoken of in the trences..

So I have a Phat... what good are these updates to me? I play Jeanne D'Arnc, HSG2, Monster Hunter and Monterster Hunter 2. Those are great games.

So what's the addvantage of upgrading? Help me out?

I know on my slim I wouldn't mind having the radio/skype and remote play capabilities. I can't seem to get the remote play working on 3.71 M33 even though I know there is a way to do it. Regardless, I'm going to upgrade to get the new "official" features on my custom firmware.

Just rerip your PSX CD.
It was a friend's copy of the game, since I didn't want to shell out the megabucks for my own copy. When I ripped a ton of games, I ripped them all as .img files, unaware that in the future I'd need to change ID numbers. He's since sold most of his good games on eBay. I think I'm simply out of luck.

More XMB features, Network Update for CFW, increased game compatibility (games that need a certain firmware to run), POPS updates, etc. There really is no reason why people shouldn't upgrade, apart from the aforementioned MS issues and such introduced with 3.80, which I still haven't experienced myself either.

13.88$ Buy it now.

Buy your games and rip them. Not your "Friend's".

How do you change firmware version in popsloader if a game isn't working too well on one of them, like I want to change from 3.72 to 3.50? It's seems that configuration is saved once you select the firmware and will use that firmware when you load the game again.

If you have the POPSLoader plugin installed with the 3.50 POPS files, you can hold R whilst booting the game to make the POPS menu come up, where you can choose what files to run the game with, and then it will save that selection for when you boot it later on.

I see 3.90 m33 is out now. Network update kinda sorta works... it downloads the updater, and asks if I want to download 390.PBP because it doesn't exist, but then that download fails and it just returns to the XMB. I'm downloading the 390.PBP manually now and gonna try it again.

EDIT: OK, it works fine if you manually stick 390.PBP in the \PSP\GAME\UPDATE folder before running network update.

It downloaded 390.pbp just fine for me. Nice and smooth.

What's the best SNES emulation that works on M33? I haven't replayed Chrono Trigger since the '90s, now seems like a good time.

SNES_9x Ttyl? I think thats the one that I've used. Of course you do see some slowdown but it never bothered me when I was playing it.

I can't play Chrono Trigger or FF6 on it... the slowdowns during battles are kind of horrible.

Just a quick question though... how do I go from 3.71 to 3.8/3.9? I'm guessing it's not an easy upgrade?

Why would you guess that? It's just a simple upgrade and the D-A Readme will have you covered no problem squire. You might want to wait though as you could be one of the unlucky few who have memory stick problems. Some say it's fine (like me) but others say it's dodgy (like Mejilan), so just do what's best for you.

I beat FF6 just fine. I had a bit of slowdown in battles but mainly had slowdown on the overworld. Everything else worked perfectly fine. Play around with some of the options in the settings like frame skip and such.

There's no luck involved. If you compress your games to CSO, you will have slowdowns and hitches, no way around it.

That only happens in games like GTA and Outrun which stream data off the UMD when played normally. Most games run perfectly fine when compressed.
EDIT: Wait, are you referring to his quote about slowdowns in FF6 and Chrono Trigger? I think he was talking about playing them in the SNES emulator, which doesn't run them at full speed during battles without using frameskipping.

I've seen reports of problems with both ISOs and CSOs. Just the majority of them are with CSOs. Until I can get confirmation that they are all gone I'm stick with 3.71m33-4. Currently people are speculating the solution being taking the fatmsmod.prx and np9660.prx from the 3.71 versions but it would require some editing to match the NIDs in 3.80. You would then run into a host of other prx's that would need ot be edited. Not sure if someone is working on it seriously yet but I am hoping someone will figure something out eventually.

As I've now popped in to ask about homebrew on the DS, I thought I'd ask on the PSP side of things. Aside from playing games disc free (PSX/PSP, emulators, etc.) what else is good about custom firmware? Is there much in the way of cool stuff or is it mainly for those of you who can't stand loadtimes/carrying UMDs around?

navanman

There are loads of other non-game based apps like Bookr (PDF reader), PSPRadio (Streaming Net Radio), PSP Filer (fiile manager, XMB MS organiser) and many others I can't remember.

In 3.80/90??? not for me at least. Even something so light as Disgaea has some degree of jerkiness and greater load times with the new driver, at CSO lvl 9 that is. At ISO it runs perfectly fine thought. Just for the record, I have an official Sony 2GB MS, and my PSP is fat (maybe that's the problem?)
I don't recommend anybody to upgrade from 3.71 yet.

That could be your problem, Sony sticks are notorious for their suckage.

I never used the 333 option because of the battery life [heck, I always use the lowest brightness setting because of that], but today I tried it and WOW!...

My memory stick/loader problems/issues are gone [or at least not really noticeable]...

No more striking slowdown so far [it was so bad in some rooms of SotN, the Rondo remake runs so fast and smooth now... I'll try Tales of Eternia tomorrow]

The amount of battery you save from ripping your games to stick (and therefore not using the UMD drive) is enormous compares to forcing 333mhz.

UMD Drive @ 222mhz = about 5-7 hours on Stamina Pack

Memstick @ 333 mhz = 12-15 hours on Stamina Pack
