PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Incoming dumb question:

I've been using 5.03 GEN-C for ChickHEN for a long time (T88v3 mobo). Newer titles (LBP and Half-Minute Hero spring to mind) have, understandably, had to be ripped to the memory stick to play, because otherwise they complain that I'm using the wrong version of the firmware.

I've moved on to the ChickHEN version of Prometheus, now. I was expecting this to 'just work', to internally do some shenanigans to allow me to play games direct from the UMD rather than complaining at me still; but it's not doing the trick. I still need to rip titles in order to play them.

I'm sure I *should* be able to run newer titles direct from the UMD, I just appear to be missing some key component in figuring out exactly *how*. Where am I being a fool?

Since I cannot find a replacement LCD screen for my PSP 2000 for the life of me (better to say that I cannot find a competent seller, as I already had massive issues with two already), I think I may just break down and either buy a used 2000 from GameStop or something or buy a new 3000 (with the holiday sales and what not, buying a new PSP would not be all that much more than buying a new LCD which may or may not work properly). Since I have been completely out of the CFW loop for the past 6 months, I have some questions.

1.) Provided that I can still easily make my old 2000's battery a Pandora, would I still be able to put in CFW on a 3000 right out of the box?

2.) If I go the route of getting a used PSP 2000, is there some kind of point of no return for OFW where even a Pandora Battery would not work?

No CFW flashing on 3k, hence no need for Pandora. You load it through an exploit(OFW 5.03) and it remains resident until turning the PSP off.

PSP 3000 and almost all Post 2007 PSP2000 systems are pandora proof. There may be some versions of newer 2000 models that can be hacked but their number is low.
You can use some save hack to play homebrew with 6.20 firmware though.

So I'm looking about going out and buying a PSP for the sole purpose of getting some custom firmware. Once I know the model, is there a quick way to check out which firmware it's running and see if it's able to have custom firmware loaded on it?

I don't know if this is a CFW problem or not, but the games I've purchased on PSN don't run anymore, and I've been using MediaGo to access them since CFW can't connect to PSN. This is the message I get every time I try to run my purchased games:

The game could not be started (80020148)

I'm on 5.5 Prometheus, and I've switched all ISO modes and turned off all plugins.

I have a PSP with 5.50 GEN-D (Full)

I know that there are 5.50 GEN-D3 and some prometheus additions.

Would someone mind explaining to me what exactly I would need to do to update my PSP to the latest firmware? It's a PSP 1000.

Is it just as simple as just installing GEN-D3, then the prometheus updates?

Edit: Nevermind, I guess the power of exploration prevailed and I have a working GEN 3D

Is there a way to get the PSN Store version of Persona 3 Portable working on Prometheus? I bought it and Riviera in the Atlus sale. The latter works fine, the former never starts.

I tried NP Decryptor but kept getting a -2 error.

Is OFW the only solution?

I also am curious about the answer to this question... I, too, just dropped 20 beans on it.

I have Prometheus 2 and I see a version 4 is mentioned here... I'll try upgrading to that, in the meantime.

Have you tried PSNfucker/lover? Because I haven't had an issue with my PSN store purchases with that plugin enabled.

I've been looking online and it seems that as I have a Daxter PSP Bundle, regardless of the OFW, I should be able to put CFW on it. Can anyone confirm this?

Thank you Salsashark, this Photofast stick is awesome. 32GB of awesome!

I was a little worried when it only read the first 16GB SDHC card at first, but after formatting, it works perfectly.

Lightweight. :/

More like i take care of my space!

No reason to carry 32gb of games with me when im not playing them all, i carry what i play. Can always rip the UMDs again!

Reading/writing speed is the same as the slower microsd card inserted.

is it possible to get custom firmware on a PSP 3000 running 6.31?

I need to know about this too.

Being a new PSP owner, all this homebrew stuff gave me headache. Tried to google in so many ways, the results just confused the hell out of me.

Heck I'm willing to buy a second PSP, a homebrew PSP-3000. If anyone wants to sell their PSP-3000 with custom firmware installed, please PM me

Running off of Custom Firmware
There's currently no way to flash CFW on a late-gen PSP 2000, any PSP 3000, or any PSP Go. Period.
Late PSP 2000s and early PSP 3000s could run a downgraded, temporary instance of CFW from the mem stick by utilizing the exploit in 5.03. But of course, you need to be on official firmware 5.03 for that to work. If you're beyond that, then you're SoL again.

So to recap, only PSP 1000s and early PSP 2000s can permanently install CFW.
Later PSP 2000s and early PSP 3000s can manage a temporary version of CFW with some official firmware 5.03 exploits and trickery.

There is buzz about a new kernel-level exploit hitting soon that should work on just about any PSP up to 6.20 (and possibly up to 6.31 eventually), but I don't know what the possibilities and limitations of this new exploit are, exactly, since it hasn't been released yet.
If you're serious about some kind of CFW or homebrew loading, though, I'd suggest not updating your official firmware again at least until this newest exploit hits as a work-able HEN.

oh damn.

I like the 3000 because of better color

Has anybody updated to Prometheus-3 yet? It seems that V4 of Prometheus 3 is the latest out I think. But I'll think I'll wait for some answers before adding the patch because I'm seeing people having issues with saves still so if anyone has an answer I'd appreciate it.

I have P-3v4, no issues with saves.

Really need help here. I've downloaded FF7 off the PSN store, and when I try to start it there's an error message: CA000005. A bit of googling comes up with something about an eboot? I don't really understand, is there something I need to change?
I'm on the latest CFW with Prometheus-2 I believe.

Total_Noob's HEN for 6.20 is apparently complete and will be released in a few days. I'm kind of tempted to buy a Go this weekend for $149 now.

Is this going to make the Go and the 3000 able to run CFW without having to do the mess that occurs now? If so, I may pick one up. Still got all my backups from when had a 2000.

I just downloaded the PSN version of P3P while it was still on sale, but I cannot get the game to start on a PSP Phat 1000 running 5.50 Prome-3. Any tips?

I'm thinking about getting a PSP Go. What's the highest firmware that halfbyte loader works with? And what's the current FW for PSP? Thanks.

6.31 for both. You need hot shots golf to run it.

It does, but not as stable. 6.20 and patapon 2 demo work best.

So I just picked up God of War: Ghost of Sparta and am trying to rip its ISO so I can play it on my CFW PSP, but it doesn't seem to be working. UMDumper 0.3 complains that "There was an error starting the dump. Check your filename is valid and your UMD is clean then try again." iso_tool_192 shows what is probably an error message in Japanese and doesn't do anything.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this probably a sign that my UMD is actually messed up? It looks fine and was purchased new...

Also, while I'm here, what do I need to do to play the ISO when I finally get it dumped? I'm currently on 5.00 M33-6 with Prometheus M33-6; is that no longer up-to-date?

Try shortening the file name. I had a similar issue with Power Stone, and once I shortened the file name from the full title to just PSC, it dumped just fine.

Well, the autogenerated filename UMDumper chose was ".iso". I tried making it "gowgos.iso" and "j.iso" and neither worked.

The fact that it was unable to autogenerate a filename is what really has me wondering if the program might be outdated...

If I have a PSP Go and download some games from the network, Am I able to back those games up onto my harddrive so when I mess with the custom firmware things I don't lose my games? Are they all DRMed to hell?

I've never actually logged onto PSN with my PSP-Go yet. I've just been using the Media Go PC software to download my games and it seems to keep a copy on my harddrive automatically.
