PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Has anyone tried playing a PS1 game (not from PSN, but ripped from a PS1 disc) on their PSP and then transferred that save to play on the PS3 with the PS1 disc since all PS3s have backwards compatibility with PS1? In that respect, has anyone done the reverse and transferred a PS1 save stored on the PS3 virtual memory card to a PSP and continued a game on the handheld? If so how do you transfer those saves back and forth between PSP and PS3? Big thanks for any answers!

You just highlight the virtual memory card and choose to transfer/copy the save to/from PSP. It automatically converts it.

Oh awesome I never even knew that. What about transferring from PSP back to PS3?

If you have the PSP plugged in then it will show up under the PS1 Memory Cards just like any external USB storage. So you just copy it from PSP to PS3.

Just to let everyone know, the 32GB Lexar stick is very, very speedy in actual use. But I do notice transfer speeds are slower when copying stuff to the device. Great price for that space though. (70 USD on Amazon)

You could get a Photofast and two 16GB microSDHC cards for about $50. I use that. It's pretty good. The speed while playing games is the same as a real card, but it's transfer speed when copying stuff is slower too.

Is there any difference between PSN PS1 games and ripped PS1 games? Also is it possible to download PSP Minis and PSOne classics with cfw?

Next to none.

I had a few issues with PSN games on CFW and I didn't want to bother, so I went back on OFW. The best of both worlds is 6.35 PRO HEN (not PRO-B, because it flashes the PSP even if it doesn't stay on CFW when it reboots, so I wouldn't recommend it).

Not directly on the PSP, because if you're at anything less than 6.37 OFW it prompts you to update. And I wouldn't recommend accessing PSN while on CFW (although I don't think Sony has ever banned a PSP).
Other options are to use a PS3 or Media Go to transfer the games to your PSP.

I haven't turned on my PSP1000 in almost a year, so I pretty much have no idea how far along the scene has moved. It's currently running on 5.50 HEN D2, and I'm wondering about the newest, stable, and reliable CFW out there. Any tips or heads up (as well as a the most reliable source of CFWs since the google is yielding lots of unfamiliar results) would be greatly appreciated.

*sigh*

...Update to 6.20 OFW

Get 6.20-TN-D

Run that since you're already on HEN's and not 5.50-GEN-D3.

?????

PROFIT!

I was about to settle for GEN D3 w/ Prometheus 4, at least that's what a few random google hits suggested as the best solution for PSP1000. Any truth to that?

Why u be sighing? It's really confusing, been so long.

He's sighing because this gets asked very often, and it gets a little annoying. If you have a PSP 1000, the best option is to upgrade to the latest Premetheus firmware. Unless you have a 3000 or Go, you should not bother with anything HEN related.

To be fair, this thread is pretty massive and shit keeps changing. :lol

haha yeah, when i picked up my psp go i was thinking oh man i'm gonna have to either read wayyy back into that massive thread or be that guy everyone gets annoyed at for re-asking questions. luckily it turned out to be pretty simple. The OP could use an update.

OT: can anyone recommend a psp go case?

Either go to eBay and search "pspgo eva case" or click this link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/New-EVA-Carry-Protective-Case-Bag-Pouch-Sony-PSP-Go-/110663054276?pt=AU_Video_Game_Accessories&hash=item19c40833c4#ht_1808wt_972

I've gone through about 3 pspgo cases and this is by far the best one if you are super OCD about getting scratches on your pspgo. It's hard on the outside, but soft felt like material on the inside which is very snug. You literally could throw this thing against the wall and I bet your PSPgo would not get a single scratch. Best of all its less than 5 bucks.

Please forgive me if there is somewhere else in this thread that has already been discussed, but there are just so many pages to sort through that I'm afraid I'd miss what I'm looking for.

I just had a question regarding the latest cfw and retail games. I just recently bought a PSP from my brother who had cfw on the PSP. I don't think I'd want to remove this feature, because I already know of some homebrew I'd like to use on it.

The problem is, I do still want to buy some retail games for the system. I already know of at least 3 PSP games out, or coming out in the next few weeks (Ys I & II Complete, Dissidia 012, Third Birthday, and FFIV Complete to name a few). I'd like to play these games, but I'm afraid it wont let me play many of these without demanding a firmware update. Are there recent cfw updates out there that let you play the retail games just fine without having to overwrite your cfw?

The PSP I have is currently running cfw 5.00 M33-6, what would help me out and is there a newer cfw I should look to upgrade to, to avoid a problem with the retail games I've mentioned.

Thanks in advance for any info or help that may be offered.

You didn't mention what type of PSP it is, but judging by the fact that it's running M33 cfw, I'm gonna assume it's either a 1000 or 2000. If you search for the latest Prometheus firmware, that should allow you to play most new games.

Fake edit: I'm assuming this is the latest version of it:
http://dl.qj.net/psp/homebrew-applications/prometheus-4-for-custom-firmware-550.html
However, I'm not sure, as I use HEN firmware.

I decided to try out the "Cleaned" CSO version of Wipeout Pulse since its file size is considerably smaller than my original copy, but all it does is get stuck at the initial loading screen. I'm using a Go with 6.35 Pro-B3. Any tips?

Bullshit. The PSX emulator being updated is reason enough alone to update to 6.20 and get a HEN on 1000 like I did. No more FF8 freezes, FUCK YEAH.

...Why would you use PSX emulation on HEN if you have a PSP 1000/2000? You might as well just go with one of the real custom firmwares that have pops support.

What's the latest firmware for PSPs now?

I've got that modified 6.20 thing, I think.

Everything seems to run fine but I haven't tried out any newer games with it (haven't touched my thing in months)

Except for the fact that a custom Final Fantasy VIII won't load on 6.20 HEN.

Is there any SNES emulator that works on 6.35 HEN? I've tried running a couple of them before on my PSP but the two that I tried(I believe it was Euphoria and another one that I can't remember the name of) would either return me to the XMB or freeze when they finished loading the game.

I played through FF8 a couple years back and it was just fine. That's the great thing about popsloader, you can use different pops versions on your PSX games until you find the version that works. You can't do that on HEN lcfw.

At least with the Japanese version, no combination of tricks I used would let me get past the moon sequence (and later Ragnarok). I eventually had to just play through that part on the PC.

Hey, sorry I forgot to mention that I had a PSP-2000 system. You were very helpful though, and I was able to upgrade to the Prometheus-4 cfw. I was still a little worried that it might not work for some games, but I just picked up Dissidia duodecim 012 today, and it works! :) Hopefully I'll have the same success with The Third Birthday, and FFIV complete in the coming weeks.

Thanks very much for your help.

No problem, glad I could help out :) If a game doesn't work, don't blame me, haha. I haven't had a 1000/2000 in quite a while, so i'm not exactly sure how things work.

Quick question: Is there a way to edit text on a PSP using a keyboard or chat-pad equivalent, either officially or through homebrew?

Dissidia 012 has a quest mode where you can edit in what looks like a hundred lines of dialog. Fun to try, but not so fun to do with the PSP buttons.

I know that with the old m33 firmware, I was able to actually edit one of the text files in notepad - I just connected it to my computer and edited.

I'm guessing you might be able to if you can find the txt file, but I'm not totally sure.

Hey, so I decided I'd get some use out of my psp and download Legend of Mana. However, I haven't used it much in a while and I'm guessing I'm unable to do this on 5.50 gen-d2? I can't particularly remember if there's anything I can do, as my last memories of it are hazy. I have no internet or computer here and copied the game at a friends house where I tried to just turn my psp back to ofw (apparently I'm on "9.90" and can't? :/).

My preliminary guess is I'm screwed for playing this until I can dl it on my ps3 upon obtaining internet Thursday. Someone tell me I'm wrong :(

so I tried to search thru this thread, until I realized that I do not know how to search thru this thread >_<

so I want to ask, does anybody know how to get Tactics Ogre to run on CFW PSP??

I have the UMD, but my PSP shuts off when I try to access the first map!!

I tried to rip the ISO, which I did, and the game still shuts my thing down!!

it sucks coz I really want to play this game :(

You'll need to patch the game after you rip your own copy unless you're running a CFW that does it automatically for you, I think.

Sweet Jesus, patching my own games I bought?
Just got 3rd Birthday, it won't run. Doubt FF4CC would run then. The only thing I use the CFW for is screenshots so I may as well just ditch this, right?

Except I can't because it says I have 9.90 when I try to run the updater. Man, this stuff has only been a pain in my butt.

I'd love to know what combo you used to get it to work (special ID, popsloader version, ripping process). Hoping to play through FF8 soon.

Getting past the odd situation by transferring to PC could also work - what emulator should I use and are the save files transferrable / convertable?

Unless you enjoy the process of hacking your psp, I'd say custom firmware is absolutely unnecessary for you. I actually do enjoy it so I like getting it successfully hacked, but when I boil it down, the most time I spend with my PSP is just playing games. So I'd say if you're just trying to play games, then just go to OFW and never look back.

There's a "version.txt" (or something) somewhere on the PSP you can access over USB mode (MM0?), change that and you can go back to OFW.

So I ended up getting a black PSP 3000. It had 6.35 firmware, so I was able to install Pro-B no problem.

So what do I do next in order to install 6.37 so I can play games like Dissidia 012?

Well, since 6.37 is OFW, you can probably just run the updater as usual. No real big trick, but Dissidia 012 is playable on Pro-B3. I bought a physical copy for my OFW 3000 and then the PSN copy for my Pro-B3 Go, plays fine.

...You installed Pro-B and now you want to upgrade to 6.37? Well, I guess just restart the PSP so you leave the lcfw, then just go to the update thing on the XMB? Or download 6.37 OFW and run the update from the XMB.
