PSP Custom Firmware Thread

"Red Squirrel's app is the one I'd recommend you use to convert your PSOne games. POPS is the only emulator out there that'll actually play the game.

You don't need to change firmwares to expand your PSOne support. Install DA's POPSLoader plugin instead. Properly installed, that will allow you to simultaneously access every supported iteration of POPS, which is just about all of them."

Convert how? Don't you just rip the iso and then compress it pretty much? So, you don't have to take the files out of the firmware like you said you used to anymore? It's just a patch?

I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. Hahaha.

Red Squirrel's app converts PSOne ISOs to PSP eboot (executable) format. It even allows you to convert multiple ISOa (multi-disc games) into one large eboot, with disc switching enabled in-game. It also, of course, allows you to fully customize the eboot (static icon, animated icon, background image, sound bite, etc.)

I think you're confusing things with the DA plugin, POPSLoader. It has nothing at all to do with converting PSOne ISOs.

you guys always confuse the shit out of me! (But you also always point the right direction, and once there it's easier to figure it out hands)

What's there to be confused about?

One is a PC tool that converts your games to PSP format.

Another is a PSP CFW plugin (made by the CFW king himself) that allows you to have more than one version of POPS (the PSP's Sony-developed PSOne emulator) installed on your PSP at once, allowing you to play a broader range of PSOne games than would normally be available.

It's pretty damn simple, really.

lingo usually gets me, although I'm getting the hang of it.

Anyway, I have some free time and FF7 laying around, is there a preferred program for ripping/playing multi-disc games?

ISOBuster has handled all of my PSOne disc ripping like a champ.

The aforementioned RS POPStationGUI MD v3 by Red Squirrel is my favorite method of converting it.

Not too long ago I ripped all of the FFVII discs and converted them into one massive eboot. Played through the entire game (including side content) without any major glitches or issues.

I don't remember what would up being the best POPS version to use though. 3.71 or 3.72, IIRC.

how big was the eboot?

Roughly 1500 or 1600MBs, IIRC. Not far off from the FFVII:CC UMD ISO, in fact! :lol

I am going to try it tonight!

okay, i'm looking at ISObuster, how do I rip FF7 as an ISO?

nevermind.

you have to put the psp on hold and then insert the battery (while holding L), then slide it off of hold to power. try that and also try putting your psp on the charger (this is what I do since my pandora battery doesn't charge on my PSP).

Edit:

Stupid me didn't put the memory card in before inserting the battery, didn't know that made a difference.

Thanks dude!

But just to verify, after it flashed a bunch of files I booted up my PSP again and the UI went back to the default blue, my system software is 3.90 M33-3 and the nickname is Gunship. That means it worked, right?

Damaged disc?

Pop it out, inspect it, and if all is well, try again. Don't forget to refresh ISOBuster first.

I'm trying to help a fellow Gaffer have custom firmware. I'm by no means an expert, but I know some batteries can not be turned into a Pandora.

He has a Fat PSP 1800mah. Can this be made into a Pandora? If not, can he just get a different battery that can be?

I haven't touched my PSP for awhile. My current version is m33 3.73-3 I think, is there any reason to update? (I don't care about remote play)

yup

Does anyone know a store (or does anyone want to sell/lend) that overnights a Pandora battery? I have a trip to China this weekend and would like to replay Super Metroid and Super Mario World.

Really really dumb noob question. For everyone playing your PS1 games on the PSP, what do you do about shoulder buttons? Is there like a button that acts as "shift" or something? I'd really like to play MGS1 next week but I'm wondering if it's possible.

The Analog Nub gets set as the L2 R2 buttons (but you can change this via a few presets).

This tutorial really needs to be in the OP, or at least a link to it. It probably gets used just as much, if not more, than the one that's there :D

You have a Slim PSP so the display won't work for some odd reason so just press the buttons as instructed.
Press "[]"(square) to backup flash to your MS, then PSP will power off automatically when done.
Insert Service Battery again, and press "X" this time.

Got to the part about installing the Datel tool battery, I only get a black screen when I switch the battery over to service mode, and the unit is completely unresponsive (can't back up or anything). :(

Edit : Actually I just re-read it, and this didn't happen for some reason.

10. When installation has finished, the IPL loader screen will appear. Press "Y" to install.

When the 4th firmware option was confirmed, it installed and said it was done, and press any key to quit.

gots me another PSP today, decided against the red GoW one after holding the box and staring at it for about 20 minutes, went with standard black. My friend here at work keeps a Pandora at his desk and combined with the oh so awesome Catb50 I was up and running in less then 10 minutes, fuck yeah!

Catb50, any monkey can do it

Followed the instructions a second time, it still won't boot the firmware when I try to use the battery in service mode, and it actually did install the boot software. :(

Update : Just like someone mentioned, it actually doesn't show anything on the screen. I had to download a youtube video of someone doing it to make sure I was doing it right, and now it seems to work. Now I just need to figure out how to play my PS1 games on it, and I'll be set. ;)

Update 2 : I've tried many times, but all I get with my old PS1 games is a black screen, the game doesn't start (although it seems the emulator is running considering i can change settings).

What games? What did you use to rip the ISOs? What did you use to convert the ISOs? What version of POPS are you trying to load them up with? Are you using POPSLoader?

got Vagrant Story today, trying to get it onto the PSP. When I got to convert it using POPstation 3.0 I'm getting an error stating cygwin.dll is not found?

Just wondering if anyone has a complete set of POPs for download. I haven't completely upgraded to 3.90, but I've helped a few friends who are new at this CFW thing and as such they're missing any POPs from 3.72 and onward.

Also, I was reading online that for some people the fatmspatch is glitchy? Is this true?

I've got everything up to and including 3.73 (which I believe is redundant, since I think it's identical to 3.72). Currently, no version of the POPSLoader plugin supports 3.80, 3.90, 3.93, or 3.95, which is why I haven't bothered to set up anything post 3.73 (which isn't supported either, actually).

Really? That's very odd. Is there something super-special about the higher POPs? Oh well, at least my friends are up-to-date. :p

I'm still on 3.71 M33-4 on the fat....

POPSLoader simply hasn't been updated since the 3.80 M33 version hit (which also works on 3.90 M33-x).

DA's next big firmware is probably going to be 4.00 M33, and I imagine that it too will see it's own POPSLoader update eventually.

okay, so I got the eboot made, now where do I put it, PSP doesn't seem to be picking it up no matter which file I stick it in.

In a folder of your choice (keep the folder name short) in the GAME folder.

Example:
x:\PSP\GAME\VAGRANT

Anyone tried that non-progressive scan TV-out homebrew app? It may be the thing that finally gets me to upgrade from 3.71-4 as my main TV is interlaced, but I won't bother if it's not too good anyway (also I can't immediately pandora back if those slow memory stick issues come up on 3.90 because I only have an 8gig stick now).

shit, thats right, knew I was forgetting a step.

shit, "the game cannot be started. the data is corrupted"

EDIT: How large are the eboots generally? I went from a 715 mb ISO for vagrant story to a 115 mb EBOOT

Yeah, Vagrant story is weird...mine went from a full ISO to a mere 70mb EBOOT. Others don't get shrink down that much though, usually 100-200mb smaller as an EBOOT.

Same here. I'm so behind on stuff though. I'm trying to wait till I can afford a bigger memory card to do more though. I'm happy with my fat at least. <3

IIRC, Vagrant Story has neither VA nor FMV. So what's filling up the CD (probably mostly padding) compresses REALLY well.

Tactics Ogre wins though. I think that compresses down to like ~30-40 MBs! :lol

so I should just try re-ripping the iso?

Probably. What did you use to rip and then convert?

The first time I used iosbuster to rip it and the RS popstation. I tried it twice and it didn't work.

Then, I downloaded simple popstation and it started the game, but it is currently stuck on "Now Loading"
