PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Has anyone heard of newish PSP games having anti-piracy measures in the form of routines that scour your memory stick for certain types of files (such as ISOs, plugins in your SEPLUGINS folder) and deletes them clean off your stick?

This is news to me.

And I only learned about it due to the release of this new bit of homebrew, that attempts to block such invasive countermeasures. Just thought I'd put it out there, in case.

http://pspupdates.qj.net/CFW-Folder...FW-messing-UMDs-tiny-update-/pg/49/aid/128658

I've got some fairly new games (Star Ocean 1, Star Ocean 2, etc.) and haven't had any issues. Admittedly, though, I still haven't put much time into either.

Can someone please direct me to a website, where I can download some .ptf themes for ofw 5.x. I have the latest PSP model (3000). Most sites only carry .ctf themes, usable only for custom firmwares.

Thanks in advance

I don't know, that sounds exactly like the kind of stuff that could get them in a whole lot of legal troubles, deleting files without user's knowldge. That's an order of magnitude dumber and more dangerous than checking if you have a CD-emulation software on your PC. I own over 30 original PSP games, but there is no way an UMD is staying in my PSP(s) longer than the time needed to rip it.

That would be radness incarnate.

Just made a big breakthrough, according to the EBOOT.PBP in my Home directory :D
β should be ready by Sunday.

*Edit* Oh, I should also say that I don't actually own a PSP yet :lol, but I've ordered one and it should arrive tomorrow. I can test that the EBOOTs are valid by comparing them to those created by GUI PopstationMD on PC.

I downloaded the Phantasy Star Protable demo and when I try to run it, I get an 80010087 error. What does that mean? How do I fix it?

There are reports of Dissida deleting cwcheat and pspstate, I don't know I don't have Dissida.

DJ Max refuses to launch if it finds in the seplugins folder any file which has 'iso' in the filename. eg. blablaisobla.prx

Is this true? We need more info on any game that deletes files or fucks up your PSP, stat!!

Dunno, but you're not missing much. Actually, I think I had that problem when I used a different account on my PSP than the one I downloaded the actual program with. Make sure they match up.

New version of that plugin that purports to protect your homebrew files from malicious code supposedly injected in recent retail releases.

Downloaded it last night and had no issues running it. Not sure what your problem is. Did you move it around your memory stick, or something? Or just let it run from wherever it installed to?

I finally got it running. I had to go into the Recovery Menu and change a few options.

Apparently Dissidia wipes SEPLUGINs and some of the newer DJ Max games refuse to run if there's any file on your mem stick with "ISO" somewhere in its filename?

Having some trouble converting FF VII. Anyone else had problems? I followed Meij's guide, the 3 discs ripped fine but when I go to convert it just immediately heads to "Press any key to return to RS-GUI PopStationMD"

Any ideas?

Is this the first time you try to convert a game with that app?
I had no issues playing my multi-disc eboot through to completion before Crisis Core hit.

Try a different converter, such as PSX2PSP.

I converted Dragon Quest VII with it, only had problems after it was converted. I think I used 2.0 though, not sure.

I'll give the other ap a shot, thanks.

What did you change to get it to work. I am getting that error.

In the Recovery Menu, go to Advanced. Then, Advanced Configuration. Set GAME plugins setting to Disabled. That's how I got it to run.

Nicely done, eznark. Enjoy. :)
Hmm, I didn't have to do any of that to get Phantasy Star Portable working.
I just downloaded and played, no issues.

I was getting the same error. Going to re-download and see if your fix works for me.

So I FINALLY got a Pandora battery and hacked up my PSP-2000. Needless to say, it was pretty easy once I got the hang of things. I'm not waiting for my battery to charge up so I can install the latest firmware (5.00 M33-6).

I'm excited but overwhelmed at the same time. What do you guys recommend I do first? I know I'm going to want to rip a huge portion of my PSone library sometime soon, but I'm also a huge SNES/Genny/NES guy. Where are the best places to get a tutorial on how to install those emus?

I'd also like to customize the entire system, with unique icons for each emulator and some kick ass themes.

Any guidance would be appreciated. :D

That's weird the fix worked for me. Finished the story mode but couldn't find a game in multiplayer. Only let it search for a couple minutes though.

Oh, I was talking about FFVII, which I ripped and converted last night but can't get to actually play. Lame, as I'm pretty sure that is the only way I would ever play it again.

oh that's dirty of them! They better not do that when dissidia comes out here, at least there's that blocker so you can still play from umd without them doing that.

So what is this bullshit anyway? It's only going to prevent me from buying games, which is sad. Anyone have know if Star Ocean 1 and 2 have this crap? Has it even been confirmed properly?

I am NOT playing games from UMD. It's simply uncivilised.

From the thread Mej linked to:

dissidia supposively removes cwcheat and one other thing when you choose ¨ms install¨

So... it sounds like if we do the regular rip, it won't be affected?

I'm stumbling my way through trying to solve this problem, I think I had a similar situation with DQVII. Anyway, does anyone know if 3.72 is the latest pops, or are there later files?

It was my understanding that the blocking plugin worked when the game is run as ISO or UMD. I don't think that makes the difference. I haven't noticed any issues with SO1 or SO2 yet.

eznark, have you tested the ISOs using an emulator for the PC (such as ePSXe)? The problem could be with the rips, not the conversions.

Edit - Nevermind. It really does only seem to work when running the game straight from the UMD. Fuck that. I'm never doing THAT again in any event.

It sounds incredibly stupid if true. I've been wanting to grab Star Ocean on PSP but patiently waiting for the 2nd one so I can do both in a rapid dance of succession. If this ends up being how others claim to be.. well.. I don't want to buy another PSP just to experience them.

According to a few people who have played through both SO1 and 2, there are no issues with CFW. They were running them from ISO on the stick.

Works find in ePSXe. At least that rules out the rom.

So... they're giving us more incentive to rip?

It makes absolutely no sense. Why offer a "legitimate" memstick rip which fucks with CFW? This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It simply punishes the user for going the supposedly "legit" method

What makes me upset is that if this kind of thing keeps up and eventually does affect self-ripped games, is that I'll end up buying a game then having to either apply a crack to my own ISO or something else, which is not the kind of thing I want to do.

Eh. This has the potential to end like PC gaming, another platform supposedly killed by pirate, and that mostly chose as a "solution" to punish legitimate users. There are tons of PC copy protection schemes that can mess a PC pretty bad or are "just" intrusive and unconvenient, which means the warez kiddies end having the better experience by far.

It does certainly look this way.

I want to play Persona 2: innocent sin on my psp but apparently it only works well on 4.01 m33-2, and I have 5.00 m33-6, is there any way I can play it? do I need a devhook or something?

It works fine on 5.00m33-6. Just make sure you're using the right pops version, check the OP for instructions.

I'm still on 3.71 M33-3 so figured I should probably update soon.. :lol Is there certain ones/order I have to install to get to the latest?

Do both of the methods in the OP for creating a new magic memory stick still require Windows XP (mspformat)? I've just tried Cat50b and it doesn't work on Vista, haven't had a chance to try the second option yet.

No problem if they require XP, just need to wait a little longer to get to a PC with it on. :)

IIRC the auto update feature was implemented in 3.80, so I'd update to that manually and then use the auto update option in your XMB.

PS: holy shit @ Dissidia deleting seplugins :lol

Hey meijen, what version/app are you using for you MAME? ...I tried all of the ones listed at PSP-hacks and none of them would run my software.

Regarding Dissidia, I bought my copy (well, copies actually 1 LE & 1 regular), ripped the iso myself, have done the data install (did the 576 mb one) and have had no problems whatsoever playing the game and my save's fine (playing on a Felicia Blue 2000 w/ cfw 5.00 M33).

I did notice however that one of my friends who actually d/led it that there was an option missing in one of the menus that keep track of the bonus stuff, but I think that was more to do with him having barely started the game than something to do with some weirdness with the Dissidia iso.

What's a "meijen" any way?
I don't do MAME, sorry. Actually, I'm not big on emulation at all. I tinker with it now and again, and maybe play through a game now and again, but only very rarely. And definitely not with MAME.
