PSP Custom Firmware Thread

After waiting a couple weeks for DealExtreme to ship, I got CFW installed in a few minutes. Just wanted to thank everyone who answered questions here (especially Mejilan and navanman). Now I'm just waiting for my battery to charge so I can use the network updater, but everything seems smooth so far.

Now I'm just hoping those newly-announced games (esp Rock Band and Motorstorm) don't have any software to screw things up.

Thanks, GAF.

Now that I've had CFW up for a few hours, I'm happy. A few thoughts:

Positive: Was really simple to rip my copy of Crash Team Racing and drop it on the PSP thanks to the OP. From the looks of it, PS1 games will look vastly better on here versus playing them on the PS3/HDTV.

Negative: Unfortunately, two of my favorite SNES games slow down to a halt. Anyone have luck with Killer Instinct or Donkey Kong Country? I guess they were among the graphically superior SNES games.

And a question: I'm sure it's been addressed in this thread, but what other apps do people like to run on CFW? Simply console emulation? Or other cool stuff?

Pandora battery. I think up to 3.50 official could be cracked without a Pandora. Anything beyond that... nope.

IIRC.

I did unlock before. I just don't want to mess up since this is not my PSP.

I just need
Pandora Batt (I have the codejunkies tool)
and fake MS

I got my PSP, hurray!

Ended up being a silver Daxter pack edition, but it's not as ugly in person as I thought it'd be. Now I give it to my roommate over the weekend so his friend can hack it.

Excite!

How big a memory stick can I buy? What should I buy? Specifically I'm wondering if there's anything that WON'T work. And is there a minimum size I need for CFW?

Every size MS available should work and the size you should get depends on how much homebrew you will use. I suggest a 4GB, which usually goes for $20

Most excellent.

Sunday night I'll have a PSP with CFW installed! And tonight I start ripping my PS1 games.

Can't wait to play Tomba! on my PSP. O:

I'm not sure what all of its uses are for, but in the early days of 5.00 M33, I used to use it to access the PSN (which then required 5.01, IIRC.) Basically, I used PSARDumper to extract the version.txt include with 5.01 official, flashed that file to my 5.00 M33 PSP, and enabled the version.txt functionality in the M33 Recovery Console. That restored PSN access before DAX released one of his 5.00 M33-x updates that eventually defeated Sony's FW version checks when attempting to connect to the PSN entirely, rendering the version.txt functionality useless. At least for me, for now.

Ok, a like almost a year ago I asked how to update my psp from version 3.40 OE-A to the newest custom firmware. I forgot to actually do it, but now I have Prinny and it says I need a better firmware to play it. I need a step by step break down of how to get to the next level because in all honesty I have forgotten how to do any of this on the psp.

Side note. I do not have a pandora's battery so it has to be a way that doesn't involve that.

The Faceless Master says follow these simple steps to upgrade from 3.40OE.

I read the last pages and I don't understand if if still possible to play recent games on umd with a cfw psp.
Does that mean I need to rip the game before playing it? I can't even test it on my psp without screwing my cfw.

How do you put the two firmwares together again like upgrade to 3.52 m33 and
3.52 firmware? Or maybe you don't put them together but I remember you had to do something to them.

The usual procedure for upgrading your CFW would be to download the Sony FW and corresponding CFW files. Extract the M33 folder and copy to PSP/GAME on your Memory Stick. Rename the Sony FW from EBOOT.PBP to 352.PBP or 371.PBP and copy to the root directory of the Memory Stick or into the CFW folder in PSP/GAME.

Ok, so I put the M33 file in the PSP/Game folder and put the Sony one in the root directory renamed to 352.PBP, but how do I start the update? I see a corrupted data icon on my psp.

Which folder did you put in PSP/GAME? Looking at the readme file it says to copy the M33CREATOR folder which is the 2nd level folder in 3.52M33 archive in PSP/GAME along with 352.PBP

3.52M33 is in the GAME folder and I put 352.PBP in the GAME folder as well, still shows as corrupted on the memory stick icon on my psp.

Edit* Oh wait, hold on lemme try that last part real fast. The readme won't open for me for some reason.

Ok, so it says I need the 1.50 firmware as well. I thought it came with it but it didn't so where can I get that and what do I do with it once I have it?

This is getting frusrating now. Please read my last post.
In the 3.52 M33 archive there are 3-4 folders, copy the folder called M33CREATOR to PSP/GAME and then copy 352.PBP into the M33CREATOR folder

Gotcha, sorry for the cause of frustration. I'm not good with this stuff.

Does this also apply to upgrading from 3.71 M33-3?

You can update direct to 5.00 M33-6 if you are on 3.71 M33-3. The procedure to do this is the same as I have outlined in my previous posts.

Nah, you can launch UMDs from a CFW PSP like normal. Not sure why you'd want to, but you can. The only exception that I can think of is the new Idolmaster game by Namco Bandai. Apparently it has an on-board OFW update to 5.05 that is required. The 5.05 update is not available as a stand-alone update, however, so it's unlikely to be cracked and CFW'ed.

It MIGHT be possible to dump Idolmaster and hex-edit it to work on 5.00 M33, but if so, then you won't be able to run it via UMD.

I haven't been keeping up at all (my PSP has been off for a year now) but is it worth updating from 3.71 to 5.00?

Also, my LocoRoco 2 UMD won't work because it needs 5.02. It's just been so long that I'm at a loss. :lol

What do I need to do to update to the newest version of the CFW (currently 4.01 M33-2)?

The OP says to use the "M33 Network update", but does that just mean use the standard XMB "Network update" option from the SETTINGS menu? I don't want to accidentally overwrite the CFW if the other update option is in a different folder somewhere... I'm kinda new to this...

Can't wait to buy up Resistance! Gotta update the FW though!

Thanks in advance.

Yes you can use the Network Update feature from the Settings menu in the XMB. It should be enabled by default and automatically download the correct Sony FW & CFW to update your PSP to 5.00 M33-6

firehawk12, you have to update manually to 5.00 M33-6. I have PAL LocoRoco 2 on UMD and it works fine on this CFW version. See my previous posts on this page for updating instructions.

Ok thanks for the info Mejilan.
I like testing my games on umd before ripping them, that's why I asked.
By the way thanks for your thread it has been very helpful.

Yeah, okay. I was just wondering if some of the random problems with post 3.71 FW have been addressed? I remember there was an issue with PSX compatibility, which is why I didn't update when 3.8 first came out.

5.00 M33-2 and higher have access to the very best version of the Dark-Alex's POPSLoader plugin, rendering any issues 5.00 itself has with PSOne playback moot. If you're at all serious about playing a variety of PSOne games on your PSP, POPSLoader is basically required.

I got the Resistance demo off the Euro PSN and tried to play it but it says I need to update to version 5.something I'm running the 5.00 m33-6 or something like that is there anyway to play this? Or am I out of luck?

You could try fucking around with the version.txt functionality, as discussed earlier on this page.

Cool. I just remember reading about the problems with Popsloader and post 3.71 FW, but I`m glad it`s been fixed.

Yeah, the older versions of POPSLoader ceased to work with 5.00 M33. Then he released a new version of POPSLoader. A better one.

Okay so I'm trying to convert my Tomba! ISO to an EBOOT file following the tutorial in the OP.

It opens up the command line and then popstation.exe breaks.

I'm running in Windows Vista. There's only the standard "popstation.exe has stopped working" error message. Nothing specific.

Code:
C:\Users\Jon\Desktop\RS-GUI PopStationMD v3.00\data>popstation.exe Tomba! SCUS94
236 9 F:\PSP\PS1rips\Tomba\Tomba.iso
---
Press any key to return to RS-GUI PopStationMD...

The end result is I have no EBOOT file. ):

Any suggestions?

EDIT:

NEVERMIND! Tried out Icetea instead and it worked like a charm and I am now playing Tomba! on my PSP omg so excited O: O:
