PSP Custom Firmware Thread

What's a "meijen" any way?
I don't do MAME, sorry. Actually, I'm not big on emulation at all. I tinker with it now and again, and maybe play through a game now and again, but only very rarely. And definitely not with MAME.

oke doke =P

Of course, PSOne emulation is a completely different story. But that's a supported feature, so it, you know, it's ok. :)

Edit - Also, spoiler:
Rolf dies. :(

Did you try mixing up various POPS versions? Is it crashing with all of 'em?

Yeah, I actually tried on all of them and with popsloader disabled. Nothing. Seems like a fair number of other people have also run into this problem (just looking at random message boards) and no one has any answers to it. Sucks.

Don't know what to tell you. Whenever I have issues, I switch ripping and converting programs. I've gotten some really problematic games to work all the way through (such as DQVII). Over the past few years, I must have converted FFVII 3 or 4 times before I finally dedicated enough time to really beating it, and that game was never one of the tough ones to get working for me.

If multiple rips/conversions all fail in the same place, then I'm likely to blame the discs. The rip/conversion process is particularly sensitive to flaws. Flaws that a normal Playstation console / PC optical drive might just overcome without issue.

:/

Edit - You've verified that your POPSLoader setup is working, right? I mean, with other games?

Likewise. I remember sitting back, as a teenager, and just marveling at Sega's sheer gall! And the fan-service in Phantasy Star IV was just stellar.

Is talking about Genesis emulation allowed? Because I bought a PSP 2000 to replace my PSP 1000 and installed 5.00 M33-6 and now Dgen doesn't work :( Because of it lack of 1.50 kernel support?

Alsto, no Resistance Retribution demo for moi?

I thought that I read that 2000s do not run 1.5, so I couldn't downgrade it to that and then install CFW.

Does DDC bypass this or something?

Just hit up one of the tutorials posted in or linked from the OP.
No one downgrades to 1.5 in order to install CFW anymore.

You probably have an ancient version of that emulator. Replace it with the newest DGen, or better yet, side-swap to the newest Picodrive, which also supports Sega CD games!

Why would you not be able to run the Resistance Retribution demo? I did weeks ago without a problem.

Mejilan, others, I need your help.

Another year, another chance to catch up and play with my PSP for a few minutes.

I downloaded what I need to in order to install 5.00 M33-6, but I read somewhere that to install it, you need at least 3.52 M33-6 (http://www.nokiasoftware.net/firmware-down-upgraders/15026-5-00m33-6-yeahnote-you.html)

I only have 3.51 M33-6. This shit moves so fast that I'm having a hard time figuring out what incremental upgrade I can do now safely in order to eventually get to 5.00 M33-6.

Ideas?

Your safest bet would be to upgrade to 3.52 M33, and then install the 3.52 M33-4 patch.
Once there, you should be able to go straight to 5.00 M33-6.

http://alek.dark-alex.org/pspwiki/index.php/Custom_Firmware#Custom_Firmware_Downloads

PS - Look on the bright side. This might just be the last manual update you ever need to do. Once you're nicely caught up, you'll be able to keep your CFW up-to-date by using the M33 Network Update to check for new CFW versions via WiFi internet, download them, and update all with a couple of button presses. :)

Thanks for the quick reply. While waiting, I looked at and started install on 3.52 m33:

I prefer getting such goodies directly from Dark-Alex, but I'm sure your sources are just fine. Good luck!

Success! I'm all set up. Thanks for your help. Now I just need to go buy some games to play.

Btw, I logged into the PSN store, but it's asking me my security question and I have no idea what the hell my answer is (probably "tAS*(DUSD(*JCS*ACAS)SDA()"). Wonder if there's a way around that..

hey guys, Im really interested in this custom firmware/homebrew stuff. I have a fat psp with firmware version 3.95 . What do I need to get started?

Read the first post. It should have all the info you need.

I've got a PSP fat with the latest firmware and I was thinking about CFW as I'd like to put my games on my recently acquired 4gb stick.

I am a CFW noob so these questions might be a little lame but I hope someone can help.

1/ If I install CFW can I still access and use the PSP store?

2/ If I want to go back to normal firmware is it possible?

3/ Are there any known bugs like certain games not playing etc?'

4/ What the hell is a Pandora battery and where do I get it?

5/ Where do I start?

Thanks

1 Yes.
2 Yes.
3 Mejilan talked about some of that within the last page or two but not really.
4 It's a hacked battery. Read the OP.

Mejilan and navanman are the best ones to ask for help from.

Thanks. I have read the OP but it's a bit much. Where do I get a hacked battery from?

better thanks

So it seems I need a "tool battery" where can I get one for a reasonable price and is there a risk that they will mess up the system permanetly?

If you can get ahold of a PSP with CF already installed, you can create a Pandora battery (all a Pandora battery is just a battery with a different serial number).

If you can't find one, you can get one from Datel (I know people bitch about their batteries, but they're good for someone who can't make one).

As for messing up a PSP, there is a chance of bricking the system. However, there's a chance of bricking a PSP by installing a standard firmware update. Besides, if you have a Pandora (aka Tool) battery, you can unbrick systems.

There's still a chance, but its not nearly as bad as it used to be.

After years (seemingly) of trying to figure out CFW for my PSP, I managed to do it tonight.

It's... it's... awesome. Even if all it allowed me to do was properly play Persona 2 Innocent Sin in English it would be worth it, but there are already so many more impressive features. I am kind of overwhelmed with the potential. I can't believe I got so easily discouraged before, CFW and homebrew are totally the way too go with portable systems.

Much respect to Mejilan for his extreme CFW knowledge. I couldn't have done it without this thread!

I would like to procure a black PSP 2000 (I hate the silver!) for to install CFW and get maximum enjoymentitude out of it.

Is there any way to guarantee that I'm purchasing one that I can actually hack? 'Cause I wouldn't want to buy one with the new chipset that isn't hackable. Unless... it is hackable now?

Popsloader

Hey guys. I formatted my memory stick a while back and totally messed everything up :S I'm trying to play PS1 games again but I have no idea how to get it to work. I'm on 5.0 M33 and am getting conflicting messages on what to do, and it does not seem like anything I had to do before when I had Pops.

Can someone please guide me through the process again?

Thanks.

I followed the OP to the letter when setting up popsloader and had no problems.

I have a very important question.

I'm using a friend's PSP with custom firmware in order to put custom firmware on my own PSP. I'm using navanman's guide, but when I go to select "Step 2: Battery" the menu jumps over it to the next option.

Does this mean that the battery is already set up, or do I have a problem?

Thanking anybody who can answer my questions in advance.

Edit: I think I may have found the problem... the PSP's on CFW 5.00 M33.
Is there any way to create a pandora battery from this firmware?

Again, thanking whoever answers in advance.

Try the newest version of UPMS/UPT. Should be 5.00 M33 compatible. It also has a tool that'll evaluate a battery and tell you if it's already in service (Pandora) mode or not. Obviously, if it is, you can skip that specific step.

Did you even look at the title of the tutorial in question. I clearly state that it's for the 5.00 M33-2 (and beyond) version of POPSLoader. ;p

Do you know where I can find this tool? I can't access anything in the program that shows me that info about the battery.

Edit: No matter what I try, the non-CFW PSP isn't booting up when I put in the Pandora mem stick or the battery. Is there a way to downgrade from 5.00M33?

2nd Edit: It seems to be something about the PSP itself. I'm now trying to use my own battery, and still the battery step is skipped over. Am I missing something?

Your PSP may be unable to make a Pandora Battery. Some of the Slim PSPs were unable to make the battery but you could use one on it, if you had the battery already.

That sucks. The PSP I was using is one of the Daxter Pack PSPs, too... :(

Just buy a pre-made Pandora TOOL Battery with the memory card and the firmware.
They are easily searchable on Google and they do not go above US$ 59.00

Most places don't ship to where I live.

Has that been released as a stand-alone update? If not, it might never be cracked and re-purposed. IIRC, 3.96 was a similar update, only featured on select UMD games. No one bothered cracking that one either.

If 5.05 doesn't include any major new features or updates, it might be possible to dump the game and hex-edit it to work with 5.00 M33.

AssassiN

got the wrong hit
Or you could edit the version.txt file so instead of 5.0whatever it is by default, it's 5.05. I did it to 5.03 to get the Resistance Retribution demo download working.
