Psychonauts 2 |OT| Mindraker

Evil Calvin

Afraid of Boobs
Only ones I can think of are

Baldur's Gate 2 (2000) -> Baldur's Gate 3 (2022 release maybe) 22 years
Wasteland 1 (1988) -> Wasteland 2 (2014) 26 years
Battletoads arcade (1994) -> Battletoads (2020) 24 years
11th Hour (7th Guest sequel) came out in 1995
The 3rd game came out in 2019 called 13th Doll (fan game which was sanctioned by Trilobyte).....so that's 24 years

Heh, I decided to stay up, as the release date is the 25th of August and it is 22h20 on the 24th here (Brussels). That is, until I saw it only unlocks at 2am.

That's disappointing. The series X is my first X-box console. Is it always like that? On PlayStation you can usually play one minute after midnight, in my experience.

Is 16 years the longest time between an original IP and it’s sequel? The only other one I can think of that comes close is Duke Nukem Forever at 15 years after Duke 3D.
Nah there are a bunch. Aside from what's been mentioned by others there's:

Bard's Tale III (1988) to Bard's Tale IV (2018), 30 years (This is the record as far as games I can think of)
Streets of Rage 3 (1994) to Streets of Rage 4 (2020), 26 years.
Ultima Underworld II -> Underworld Ascendant (25 years)
Elite III (1995) -> Elite Dangerous (19 years)
Tempest 3000->Tempest 4000 (18 years)

It's actually not crazy uncommon in the era of Kickstarter for people to dig up some very old stuff for the fogies who still care.

Unless you mean between a first game and the second, which would probably just be Wasteland. But then you wouldn't have said Duke Nukem I guess.

So Playstation only has games... because Xbox gives to it?
Thanks Microsoft for Returnal and Rift Apart. My favorite games this year, so far.

On subject, I've started the first Psychonauts which I never got around to on PS2. I'm not really feeling it yet, but I want to try and push through and see if I want to begin this one, knowing it's a longer commitment.

No usually it's a midnight release, and usually you can switch to NZ when it's midnight there to play early.

Occasionally (like this and Flight Sim) it has a global release where it releases at the same time everywhere, regardless of time zone.

It really varies from game to game to be honest. A while back every game was midnight but most games seem to have a random worldwide unlock time. It's a 'fairer' way of doing it really otherwise New Zealand/Australia just get everything first.

it's completely random, some games unlock on midnight of each region (and you can then just change the country on your Xbox to play it early as well) or some developers set up a very specific time that it unlocks at globally.

I prefer the midnight releases, especially since that means you can set your system to New Zealand or Australia and play them 8h early

Fired up on the PS5. Funny that the first thing you see is an in your face XBOX GAME STUDIOS logo 😂😂

60 FPS at least. Weird to not feel any vibrations or get any controller feedback especially coming off of Tsushima. I’m sure MS was like “Give them the bare minimum.” 😂

I know you're semi joking but they only had to provide a PS4 version. The fact they added a 60fps mode on PS5 is going above what the devs had to do.

I was playing psychonaughts 1 on the cloud....uhhh. Feels like if I subtracted the cloud, it would maybe feel like sly cooper. Is the first level bad, or am I supposed to look past this for something greater?

Well, shit. There is another Ultima Underworld game?

The thread is more enthusiastic about then game than Penny Arcade. I started a thread in there and barely anyone showed up.

I played some of the beginning level. It already starts off with a good idea with Loboto...
...operating on himself to remove them from his mind.

I get the impression the Psychonauts 1 is a little touchy on the PC. I remember the XBox version was fine, but the PC version does has some issues with modern operating systems.

Still it is $.99 on gog. No reason to get a DRM free copy now.

It has gotten some patches over the years. Plays nicer with XInput controllers now and some other fixes.

Such a fun quirky game, I played for awhile and really liked some of the characters. The camera can't get out of its own way at times, but other than that I don't really have anything negative to say. I love how alive everything feels

First time playing this series, so far so good, very funny, and the gameplay is very interesting. Playing on PC, the performance is great.
I disagree. I'm playing on PC as well, and there's stutters and hitches everywhere when doing things for the first time. It's REALLY disappointing.

Typical UE4 shader compilation hitching.

Yeah. I am on PC and I had one hitch so far. It seemed like it was loading something. I have not updated my video card drivers. I should try that.

OK just finished the second brain and the 1st real boss.

Some quick thoughts.

Holy shit they ramped this thing up to 11, if the second brain is this large how big are later levels going to be?

They upped the craziness off the charts as well.

The HDR really shines in that second brain. So much glowy.

While it took 16 years for this to come, I'm glad we finally got it, and that it's the vision Tim had for it instead of something paired back due to budget. Surely this will be a cult classic just like the 1st.

Ive only found 2 scavenger hunt items so far. Is it possible to have scavenger items in the brain levels?
First game in several months to use quick resume on series x, nice to see it back.

I don't think you are meant to find them all yet as there are parts of the place still locked. I'm guessing you aren't going to finish that quest until near the end.

Imagine being genuniely hyped for a game, playing it, and it's even better than you hoped. Haven't felt that in a while.

This is exactly it, they took everything that was great about the first and enhanced it. So far its amazing......

Played the first level/tutorial. Loved it! With this and Ratchet & Clank getting great reviews, I hope they both do very well sales wise, so that publishers take notice and make more like these.

Only played the tutorial mission and then some, but it is already so clear this is going to make me so happy. It is so nice to see a game this weird and kind of niche get the polish of a big budget mainstream game.

Can't decide on 60 or 120 fps. The art style kinda allows for lower resolutions, but the image is still visibly softer at times. On the other hand, 120 fps is so smooth...
