Quantum Break PC performance thread

What is going on here? Is the game rapidly switching between 30fps and 60fps?

I'm hoping it's just triple buffered vsync and that gsync will smooth it out, but then I heard someone else saying they had to disable gsync to get the game to run normally, so who knows at this point. well, until I get my hands on my PC code (preordered the digital Xbox One version). because I'll know :)

Damn, seems anything Xbox related is full of fuckery for this gen. I really wonder what the fuck they are thinking and how could they get so many things wrong time and time again. If you know the game is not up to snuff on pc delay it, not like it hasn't been done before.

Pretty much expecting the same thing to happen to Gears 4 at this point. This is disappointing all around man.

Xbox One version is excellent.

Did you mean PC?

I'm sure Gears 4 on X1 will be fine.

At this point I'm praying for an updated Xbox or that they move on to the next thing pronto if even the pc ports carry the stink of their failures.
Xbox 1.5 would be hamstringed by the ESRAM. It wouldn't be as powerful as PS4k unless MS forgoed backwards...upwards...compatibility, whatever they're calling it. Best thing MS could do is weather the storm a couple years and release Xbox Two in 2018 or 2019. Unfortunately for them the brand mindshare might be totally dumpstered by 2018-2019 so it's quite a dilemma. This renewed PC push feels like desperation. Terrible decision after terrible decision from MS this generation.

PCGH.de started their coverage. Normally I try to translate the most important paragraphs real quick but I'm running out of time (leaving the house in 20 mins).

Overall they aren't happy.

Frametimes: R9 Fury - 1080p

I think waiting to see how this plays out might be the best solution for this game atm.

I wonder if DX12 can cause this problems..

Looks like not having a pre-purchase or preload option means I dodged a bullet with this game.

Sucks. I was really looking forward to playing it. :(

Part of the reason for having incremental console updates is to have backward and forward compatibility. As other users have said, if they don't keep the ESRAM, backward and forward compatibility get broken.

It really seems like the PC version of the game - the performance, the UWP situation, everything - may well wind up hurting even the Bone version sales-wise. Hope it isn't the case, though.

Why?

Well, the first mistake was responding to Sony switching to GDDR5 by adding the ESRAM. That and a wealth of bad business decisions keep following them.

I'm not impressed with the design of the XB1, but I really don't think they responded to Sony at all. During development, Microsoft asked developers what they wanted and the reply was mostly "Xbox 360 was great. More of the same!". XB1 apu is not too dissimilar to xbox360 xenon in the broad strokes.

How could they ship the game in this state? That's just contemptible, there is no better way of saying, wet don't give a shout about you.

I’m running a GTX 970, an i7-5820K CPU clocked at 3.30GHz, 16GB of RAM, and playing the game on ultra settings at 1080p with the latest NVIDIA drivers. And, if it makes any difference, I have the game installed on an SSD. Hardly a monster PC, but well within the recommended specs. I tried playing at higher resolutions on my 4K monitor, but the frame rate, unsurprisingly, took a massive hit.
As well as the frame rate issues, there’s also some distracting pop-in, particularly with foliage. Sometimes you’ll approach something—a car parked on a street, for example—and you’ll see it transition instantly from a low-detail model to a high-detail one. You don’t notice this stuff when you’re in the thick of a time-bending firefight, but it makes the experience feel disappointingly scrappy sometimes
And I have no idea why a digital copy of the game is £45 on Xbox, yet PC gamers are being charged £50.

It's just the latest in a line of gimped Win 10 exclusive UWP games. The silver lining is that disasters like these will keep devs away from using UWP and keep them on Win32 where PC games belong.

I'm sure they have quite a few options, outside of handling it all in software

They could increase the amount of ESRAM, which would go some way as the main bottleneck for the RAM speed.

Alternatively they could pair up ESRAM and much faster DDR4 ram , which would keep a big chunk of the setup but increase the overall bandwidth speed.

No chance third parties are adopting UWP. Not with all of the technical limitations and poor word of mouth.
Well I guess (and hope) they will force the UWP on developers for XBO. That should help the platform to grow faster, certainly after the Xbox store will have been merged into the Windows Store this summer. 🙂

This is so disappointing.

Especially coming from Remedy (even though I know most of the blame is to be with Win10 store).

I'll wait for the inevitable patch, and maybe the inevitable release on another storefront. Not giving ms any money.

I feel sad for Remedy, such a talented group.

How does it play with Kb/M? And how is it that we almost have no impressions thus far? Anyone buy it that isn't waiting on a preorder code?

Not sure if older drivers work better.

Man what a sad state of affairs that high end PC's are just trying to get parity with X1 even those with Titan X

I don’t know what happened. It could have been a problem with my PC. Someone contacted me on Twitter to say the latest NVIDIA drivers were underclocking their GPU, so maybe it was that. I have no idea. But now the game is in a playable, if not perfect, state. The frame rate holds at 50-60 indoors, dropping to 40 outdoors. Some have suggested the game could have been unpacking data in the background, as I ran it just after the download finished. But these problems persisted for a good hour.

Or use GDDR5X instead of eSRAM+DDR4? They don't have to use the same architecture as XBO.

Are the cutscenes/live show available in the physical copy in the Xbox one version?
If they are indeed streaming at 4K on pc, that's quite a big fuck you to people who don't have good internet.

There is no existing or upcoming apu that could make plenty use of hbm2. Polaris 10 and gddr5x are plenty enough. Actually Polaris 10 would be just great for q1 2017

I'm sure Gears 4 on X1 will be fine.

But it really isn't excellent. I can't wait to play the game but PC people talk about things that console people don't. X1 has framerate drops when locked at 30fps. It has the 720p upscaled.

PC people rightfully thought that 60fps would be easily achieved and it isn't even with a high end video card.

At least those of us who bought the Xbox One version can play that, should the PC version run worse on their PC, and if / when it gets fixed, the saves are cloud saved and transfer over.

So I can definitely start playing the game tonight... but god knows what the PC version is going to be like. At least I don't have to worry so much. As I said before, I bought an Xbox One in no small part to play this game on it. The PC version was just a bonus.

Even if it's looking to be a pretty poor bonus.

I don't think it's 'rightfully' expected when the game is running at 720p ish and 30 fps ish on an Xbox One that the PC version will easily run at 60 fps at 1080p on PC. I certainly wasn't expecting that after Dead Rising 3 and others. I certainly wasn't expecting not to be able to run it at native 1080p though, and I'm not happy about that. I'm also not happy that yet another DX12 game skips multi gpu support.

I'd say most of the blame is on Remedy. I love'em but it seems the port is bad at the moment. Killer Instinct (despite the refresh rate issue), runs fantastic on my 2011 PC. maxed out and 60fps no dips.

Anymore more benchies yet?

Assuming exact Xbox one settings and resolution, locked 30 FPS, can we at least play at those settings?

No one sets out to do a bad job. Only reason ports like this happen is time / budget constraints. Oh UWP too maybe.

I was expecting this to run worse than ROTTR since it runs worse than that does on Xbox One. I wasn't expecting this upscaling nonsense though.

So what's worse, QB or Arkham Knight? lol

Probably this considering something as basic as resolution is completely fucked.

I understand that the resolution reconstruction / upscaling is an integral part of the console version, and I think it's very smart and innovate, really I do. But when you're on PC and you explicitly pick a resolution from a menu, it should go without saying that that is the rendering resolution.

There seem to be a number of other issues on top of the resolution thing, but I think that is what is most confusing and what is giving people the worst impression from a presentation standpoint.
