Rants/Raves after the PS5 conference

Great to see some new games - GOD:R was a big smile moment, not gonna lie. But oh boy... so much cross-gen. Microsoft was raked over the coals for it, but they were absolutely straight up honest about it from the start. Sony lied non-stop for months, and then stepped up to show me next gen... and showed me I don't need to buy a PS5 till God of War Ragnarok drops at the earliest - assuming that its not cross-gen as well! PC and PS4 good for at least another full year, and XSX for third parties and GPU. Console price was an "Oh shit!" moment. $399.00 for the DE is solid......

.....

but, the thing that really snatches defeat from the jaws of victory is the game price increase. That game-price increase shows the real cost of the hardware. That $399.00 DE locks me into their digital store, where AUD$120.00 will be the going rate for their exclusives. Microsoft is throwing so much value at me I literally can't play all the games on offer, and Sony just stepped up the prices of its next-gen versions to AUD$120.00. That's basically a deal breaker.

Need more time to process this.

The good news is that I think most if not all of Sony's big exclusives announced thus far have a really good chance at releasing in 2021 or sooner.

Maybe we get a State of Play in December showing actual next gen titles for 2022?

Arrowhead Games Studio has got to be sitting on an advanced PS5 game at this point.

For me the frustrating part was that they mostly showed the same games as last time, it gave a big « seen that already » feeling, even if some had more screen time.
The few reveals were actually ok and needed, but it's a shame they wouldn't demo the whole PS5 experience (dashboard, loading times, « create » features)

In the end it didn't feel like a dedicated event, more like an update of the previous one. Like when you watch the gamesCom demos a few weeks after E3.

Prices are expensive in Canada. A console plus a game or two with tax will be close to a grand.

given most of these games are on ps4 and Xbox one, I might wait until either prices come down, black ps5 comes out, or first "slim" designs come

My first "must play" is God of War '5'

no must plays on Xbox but I have game pass

fine with the Pro and One X for time being

Yes.

Both Xbox and PS launches look bad, however of the two, PS launch looks better. But its still shit.

This will be my last generation since i am getting into photography so i will pick up PS5 not at launch, but when the true next gen games start showing up.

I think God of War Ragnarok will be one of the true next gen titles.

Only one hobby allowed at a time?

Last gen had no day one games either. Always takes a year or two for the generation to get going.
People keep saying this shit, but it's BS in my opinion.
N64 had at launch, Super Mario 64.
Xbox had Halo 1.
Xbox 360 had Kameo and PDZ.
Xbox One and PS4 had Ryse and Killzone.
Not to mention all the other games these consoles (and others) launched with.
Now for sure, some of these games weren't so great (and some were amazing!), but they were all clearly next gen. Titles that couldn't be done on the previous generation, and were great improvements compared to the last. Yes games improve as the generation goes on, but there were still always games that had that wow factor in a new generation. And now those games just aren't there any more.

Perfect Dark Zero and Ryse are two of the worst games I've ever played.

Photography is a lot to take in and I'm enjoying it. Just going to focus more on that than gaming. Gaming is going to take a bit of a backseat.
I can't help myself to log in e wry now and then and play some Division 2.
Rivht, noe I have to be on someones shit list after mentioning that abomination of a game.

Uh... no... it's the most shallow and repetitive game of its ilk I've ever played.

Disappointed!

- Apart from Demon Souls everything cross-gen, maybe even GoW.
- Sony lied, get over it.
- FF exclusive is just plain mean.

I liked the PS Plus Collection thing, but what a dig move against Gamepass.

So it's just Demon Souls. Good enough? I don't know.

Spider-man MM and Demons Souls are better than any of them IMO and Destruction All-Stars looks like a lot of fun. Godfall will be a serviceable coop game too.

SM64 was groundbreaking at the time and it's hard not to let nostalgia come into it there and for Xbox people the same with Halo. But with the rest, it's no contest. PS5 wins.

They also can't release everything on day 1 just to cannibalize each-others sales, that would be really foolish.

The 2021 lineup looks insane too. I hate Harry Potter and the game looked really interesting to me.

I seriously don't understand how they can fuck up so badly I went from dead set on getting a PS5 to not getting one.

On a broader view:

Cross gen games. I still haven't got my head around at Horizon being on PS4 too. HOW?

80eur games.

An almost DLC for Spiderman and a remake the only heavy hitters at launch.

No PS1 PS2 or PS3 BC

Regarding the event:

80% filler with games that may be fine for some but that are not even close to being the reason people tuned up yesterday.

No mention of release dates even for actual launch titles.

Typos / wrong slides

Introducing the PS + collection thing with barely any detail or explanation.

Talk nothing about BC until the day after when actually looks like 99% of PS4 will be compatible, but no mention then.

Nothing about if and how PS4 games wil be enhanced in PS5.

Not showing the console physically, not showing the user interface.

I don't think I could come up with something worst if I tried.

MM is a PS4 game, nothing about it looks next gen. And yeah, Demon's Souls is the best looking launch title the PS5 has. But at the same time, the best looking title is a remake of a game that game out a decade ago.
I'm not going to say you can't be interested in the games. I'm talking about whether anything looks next gen or not, and it doesn't.

I liked what I saw, a couple of previously unannounced games I'll definitely be buying. But I'm unable to see how these need a new generation console, except for R&C and Spiderman. So far R&C seems to be the only one that wouldn't really have been possible without new hardware.

Not really sure if I'm getting PS5 at launch, there are not that many games for me there at launch. But when I see it on the store shelf, I probably won't be able to stop myself.

Higher game prices are really not a problem for me, i buy games day one maybe once or twice a year.

Look at Spider-man again...look at the ray-tracing everywhere, snow deformation. The combat and lighting and particle effects.

We can compare the scaled back PS4 version when it's out if you're still interested. I'm still hyped to have a super hero game of that quality coming out when WB and Rocksteady are going GAAS with Batman etc.

After confirmation on cross gen Horizon. All my next-gen console hype has been deflated.

NVIDIA was the best showcase this year BAR NONE! If I'm gonna play cross-gen, I'd better do it with the maximum glory possible .

Stupid Sony and their "generations" cap, I knew Jim Ryan was a snake.

"We believe in Generations"

I don't really see one or two cross gen games near launch as being them going back on their word. Especially when they are launching with Demon's Souls which look ridiculous and have shown several other games that are totally exclusive.

To me the issue isn't that they haven't shown that they don't believe in generations, It's that they acted like these two games weren't crossgen. That doesn't suddenly mean all the other next gen exclusives are lies, but it's just a shitty thing to do.

They definitely should have mentioned MM and HFW being cross-gen before, I'd never deny it's weird they hid that information, I just don't get the claim that they lied.

So happy I opted for PC in the end after the already immensely disappointing "events" preceeding this. I don't care if I have to pay significantly more for my hardware as long as I keep my freedom and my game prices low.

I agree with all of this. My PS5 hype really plummeted after this shit show.

They never said every title would be PS5 exclusive. Just Xbots trying to stir up things.

That's disingenuous and you know it...Jim Ryan has talked on numerous occasions about experiences that can only be had on PS5, moving customers over, and defining generations.

It worked though, everyone is defending it or hand waving it....not surprising.

What is the problem with crossgen? That complaint from a PC gamer has no sense. You buy a next gen console to play games in the best way possible. Why are PC gamers creaming for the Nvidia 3000 if only play crossgen games that you can play in your actual PC?

Nah I totally get people who are claiming that they "lied" about it being exclusive. It's was genuinely disingenuous.

But people are acting like this lie suddenly means "SONY IS CROSS GEN JUST LIKE XBOX" when it's really not.
Unless tomorrow we find out RnC, GoW or Project Athia is actually cross gen.

He did, and it seems like we are clearly getting these experiences, as they have showcased several totally exclusive games that are launching this year and next.

No UI is the only thing i can complain about.

and being too much in demand that i'm now nervous about my preorder.

I have a certain definition of lie and I'd need to see them having said otherwise, I guess. NOT saying it's cross-gen isn't really a lie to me. Like it's no more a lie than there now being way more than 100 games that work on BC now. Honestly just like XBOX is a fine comparison, I mean, how many of their exclusives are actually cross-gen?

If anything its cemented the fact, that if you want next gen, get a pc

Nothing from xbx or Sony is tempting at all

2020 apart from the 3000 series of cards has been a massive let down

Prerty much same here. No new games yet where in my list none of those they showed i rly would need. So why buy new console... what kind of business is this? Console without games? 2 month until consoles goes out and still no real gameplay of some new games...

It happens after every show. Wether it be Xbox or PlayStation. The trolls come out of the woodwork in shifts. Just get used to it.
This so much. Excitement is not allowed to happen ever. Either side will just drown you out with console war spam posts. For example, you had one poster trying to sell you that this presentation was the absolute worst out the four this year.

My Rants

1. There is nothing original for the xsx or ps5 that I am excited to play at launch. Don't care for reboots.

2. Game prices go up but content is becoming less. Almost every game has tons of content behind DLC pay walls

3. This generation is one the weakest launch in the modern era. There is not a "must play" game launching with either.

4. These are supposed to be 10+teraflop beast! The graphics are just not impressive for either console. Lighting is improved but it's eh at best. Craig is like a perfect symbol for this generation.

As for launch, yeah I agree it seems pretty barren. I never really liked Demon's Souls but I'd probably get it to have at least something pretty to look at. 2021 seems like it'll be pretty packed though. I suspect E3 2021 is going to be mind-blowing. Maybe that's when third parties will start teasing their actual next-gen stuff.

At least with Series X, cross-gen games will come enhanced. No word yet on whether PS4 games, get an enhanced treatment or whether it will be a straight up port/emulation.
