between EIGHT POINT EIGHT and the Kayne and Lynch Incident and this, it's really funny how Jeff keeps getting shit just for keeping it real.

Loved the bit in the current bombcast where he says that if he *could* he would have rated twilight princess even LOWER

I'm just going to pretend you meant "Kanye & Lynch" and imagine what that game would've been like.

Yeah, this stood out for me.

How are you working and making a living from games media and not knowing one of the most experienced and prolific people in the industry?

To be fair, Meg is the only one that actually does stuff related to the industry at large. Ryan is in Let's Plays and Gus does administrative stuff along with a voice in RvB and live action bits.

Can someone explain to me how the game is a technical mess? I've been playing for about 25 hours and have had not one issue on ps4.

I played all Bethesda games on a PS3 last gen, I know what a technical mess is. This is perfect in comparison.

And the game is phenomenal. Giving a low score based on technical issues alone is a slippery scope. Glitches effect different people different ways. I was never bothered by them, as long as I can still play the game in some form I enjoyed it and all Bethesda games of last gen were among my favorites. Judge a game on the game first, then make sure to comment on how it runs. Unless it's so broken the game itself doesn't work well which is not the case with fallout 4.

That doesn't sound any different to Gerstmann's current role at GB.

Games should just stop having review scores because of stuff like this. Of course it will never happen because of metacritic, but this idea of the review content not mattering as much as the arbitrary score attached (1-10? 1-5? There's no standard).

What she said is a common line of thought. Basically every review thread on this site has people saying the same thing as her.

I'm not familiar with the specific review in question and I have no idea if the Rooster Teeth comments were off base in this circumstance, but I'm glad to read that someone is publicly taking Gerstmann to task in some form. The guy is a stick-in-the-mud blight on games media that's treated like a messiah for giving one shit game a mediocre review a decade ago. He has zero enthusiasm and only cynicism for gaming -- and it shows in both his writing as well as his podcast. He should just switch over to writing about wrestling or something that he actually enjoys.

I will always be perplexed by people who demand fake excitement when it comes to video games over their actual feelings.

Crazy to me.

Do movie critics or music critics do this to each other?

I remember some artists going after rolling stone and pitchfork after less than favorable reviews. I don't think they got down a personal level though.

Weird. Jeff Gerstmann was on their YouTube stream and Bernie Burs was on GB's stream with Greg Miller. I thought Bernie and Jeff seemed like seasoned vets out there with a lot of mutual respect for one another. Shame.

I've been to every RTX. I don;t mind them having criticism, but it's just kind of a cut throat approach to it...

I've got like 48 hours into the PS4 version and at times the framerate is a complete mess and is easily under 20fps. I've always had three hard crashes and a freeze (these coming in the past day or two).

Get a load of that stick in the mud.

Yeah. Fuck him for reviewing games on the internet since the internet began. He hates videogames.

Rip Monty but rwby was otaku trash that had terrible voice acting meh... I like early read vs blue

I won't comment on rwby but Monty Oum's passing was an unexpected heart-wrench that still unexpectedly gets to me from time to time. Sad to think about the things we will never get to see from him.

Whole thing is pretty silly considering Jeff pretty much said that he really likes the game but scored it lower out of principle. Game is unplayable at times on consoles. 3 stars is generous.

I've watched rooster teeth for quite awhile but don't really their opinions on specific games. They tend to be really enthusiastic about what they like (often AAA shooters) and ignore a lot of Nintendo and indie games.
(Or at least that's how it was a year or so ago when I stopped watching the vids related to those topics)

I don't see how lowering the score by one star due to technical issues is "giving it a low score on technical issues alone"

He cleared noted that the deduction was for technical issues, allowing those who don't care about those things (like myself) the opportunity to factor that into their purchasing decisions. Seems fair to me.

Fucking LOL at calling GB's integrity into question.

Dan Rykert just shit all over his roommate's game on the last podcast, FFS.

The Fallout stuff they talked about on the latest Bombcast was so mild that only a total shill/fanboy could get upset over it.

Jeff Gerstmann is still a threat.

What I mean is that it's not strange if someone who doesn't really interact with industry and especially reviewers doesn't know about Jeff.

And Meg clearly knows who Jeff is with that odd Mixlr deep cut.

To be fair, even though he likes video games, he is still incredibly cynical. It almost seems like, except for big franchises, he goes into a game with a negative initial mindset until something can turn his negativity around. It comes through in quick looks.

Probably worth mentioning the founder of RT seems to have a lot of respect for Gerstmann, and they've been on each other's panels. This looks like an uninformed cosplayer said something dumb, and the other guys went with it.

Even the RT community savaged them over it. Here's Ryan's response in their subreddit where he doubles-down (check the downvotes)

He's never heard of Jeff Gerstmann and he's questioning his integrity as a reviewer. Jeff of all people.

He doesn't love games as much as me! I love every game! Big Rigs? 9/10. Bad Rats? 9.754/10. I've had to go invent new numbers higher than 10 to represent how much I love games more than everyone else.

I don't like GB or RT and I think they're both right and wrong. I like that Jeff brought up the technical issues because that's really something that needs to be talked about with Bethesda games. They can't get free passes anymore. That being said I played it on PC and it's by no means a "technical mess" and I do feel they used that phrasing just to get clicks. I'm 30 hours in and I'm having a blast, but RT writing off GB's review as pure cynical clickbait isn't right because if you read it you can tell it's from a place of love for the series and wanting it to be the best it can be.

I get why people think of Gerstmann as a curmudgeon, but I think he's just sick of seeing the same shit over and over and over again in the AAA world which he's expected to cover in depth.

You present him with something novel and fun and surprising and often silly, and he lights up.

Of course he's going to have opinions like the rest of us, but what I love about Jeff is that he'll drill down deep and explain in pretty extensive detail why he feels the way he does, and that's really all you could ask when it comes to opinions, whether you find them agreeable or not. He also has his own personal biases and tastes that are never going to mesh with everyone - the same as all of us.

And hey, he's super easy to avoid if you don't want any of it.

That's pretty dumb lol.
Also the giant dog thing in the first area of the game totally glitched on me in a sewer. So I beat it without doing anything lol.

Meg Turney: "Ok, so I have a bone to pick. And it's people who review shit low. Because I feel like people do that to be 'eh we're different'. Everybody gave Fallout 4 90s and up. 70. You're not different or special because you review a game low!"

In her defense, I've seen a lot of people make this idiotic argument that people score things this way or that for "attention"

Fallout merchandise or not, I've always found Rooster Teeth speak from the heart and I can't say the same about Giant Bomb. 'Wine and cheese' might be a bit much but I think the general gist of what she said is spot on about them.

He rated the PC version higher than the console versions because you don't see the issues that exist on the PS4 and Xbox One.

This is why I don't want Mega64 being absorbed by RT. They've partnered up with Sakaguchi, Kojima, Blezinski, Miyamoto, and get sent promo materials on the regular, but never shy away from giving negative opinions of any games.

Yeah, he is the only one I've ever seen who uses it.

The mixlr from last week when he went to goto BB and the cashier said "your child is going to love this!" It's so good

It's not *just* the fact that they had a problem with Jeff or his review in particular. It's that given their reach and audience, they're perpetuating this ridiculous idea of reviews needing to be similar and that people can't have differing opinions on games. According to them, EVERYONE needs to like Bioshock Infinite and EVERYONE needs to like Fallout 4.

Like people were jizzing over Jeff Gerstmann and Giant Bomb because they called out all the problems in the game.
well yes that tends to be how reviews are supposed to work

Doesn't make her right. GAF has a history of getting into defensive fanboy mode over (somewhat) negative reviews just as much as other communities have.

Jeff gave Fallout 4 2 scores; 4/5 on PC and 3/5 on consoles citing the technical issues that are present on consoles to warrant the lower score. He obviously enjoys the game and thinks the PC is the place to play it which makes this entire thing sillier.
