[S-Conf] Assassins Creed III: Liberation for Vita [Screenshots]

Looks really good.

I waited in line and watched the Ubisoft presentation of AC3 today, and holy shit, that game is amazing. I'm going to be in Assassin overload this October, because I'm getting both Vita AC, and PS3 AC. I love this series.

But first, I have to buy and play Revelations.

Is Liberation anywhere on the show floor?

Is Liberation anywhere on the show floor?

I didn't see it, actually. I didn't really look though, either.

I don't think it was at the Ubisoft or Sony areas, but I didn't walk around the entire Vita section, just the games that immediately sprang to mind that I wanted to play on Vita (LBP, PBR, Sly, etc).

Some impressions from IGN.

The devs claim the game will have shorter missions for a better handheld experience, but also will have more missions to balance that out.

They're also claiming that the new animations and features from AC3 are coming over to the Vita version.

The first thing to know about Liberation is that it looks and sounds like a full Assassin’s Creed release. If the game had not been announced as a Vita title, I think I would have assumed it was going to be a console release, because it looks fantastic. The game is being built with the same engine as Assassin’s Creed III, and if they’ve scaled anything back graphically to fit the game on the smaller system, they’ve done an excellent job hiding it.[...]

Sounds amazing!!!

Goodness, this is attractive.

I want this to be good SO BAD, but I know better. It's a Western developed portable game tie-in to main franchise. It's got doom and gloom written all over it.

PROVE ME WRONG, UBI.

Another video impression by Dtoid of the closed door presentation. Don't know why they did a video, instead of a written article. Impressions are still great nonetheless.

I expect the game to look significantly worst than these screenshots.

What if it did look like the screen shots? Gravity Rush and Uncharted (Sans the Jaggies) proved that the Vita is capable of great graphics. Those that have actually seen the game played on a vita have all said it looks on par with AC3 for consoles shrunken down to the Vita.

Poptimal revealed some more details.
They do expand on the story a bit, but I thought the gameplay stuff was more interesting:

Ubisoft Sofia kept the handheld nature of the Vita in mind when it came to designing missions. Assassin’s Creed fans can expect missions they can complete in short bursts for an on the go experience. According to Capel, the length of the game will last 15 hours for experienced gamers and up to 20 hours for the typical gamer.

When it comes to combat, Aveline will bring a mix of flair and precision using melee combat, hidden blades, pistols, and her silent, deadly blowpipe. Capel also confirmed that Aveline will be able to wield two weapons at the same time in Liberation, a feature that also will be seen in Assassin’s Creed 3 combat system.

Aveline’s social status will also effect the gameplay, but Capel couldn’t speak more on it till a later date. He did confirm that unique activities such as Mardi Gras will take place in the game.

The Louisiana Bayou will bring a variety of wild animals many that Capel labeled as a threat. The most dangerous animal according to Ubisoft – the alligator. “These wait on the banks of the swamp or cruise the waters looking for prey, and will attack people whenever they can.”

The Bayou’s swamp like nature will be dangerous to traverse, making trees the safest and fastest way to get across. Even though the alligator threat is left below, Ubisoft promises the Bayou will have a threat of its own. “Within this region, the player will encounter smugglers and other outcasts from New Orleans, living in their own settlements and following their own rules.” I don’t know about you, but the Louisiana Bayou doesn’t sound like a fun place to be.

Capel also confirmed that Avaline will be crossing the Gulf to Mexico, but no further details were given.

this is pure badassery

I wish Connor from ACIII had that kinda headwear. The hood is really getting to me.

Conner's Altier-like assassins outfit don't even fit the era,the assassin's outfit main job is to allow the assassin is to blend in,but Conner's one look just wrong with everything else and he look like a clown or something,I guess they(Ubi) wanted to give him something like this, but were afraid of upsetting the fans.

Those screens have to be bullshots. like its just too hard to believe that it looks like that.

and I have a Vita, so I'm ready to be wrong, but jesus.

This looks like the genuine deal, I am pretty hyped for this

It was funny in the trailer, though, how subdued it was compared to what AC does these days with its setpieces. The biggest sequence in the trailer was when the horse cart caught fire and she jumped on, compare that to the siege on a castle and the massive sea battle we've seen in the console releases.

However, if done right, dialing back the mayhem and focusing on some of AC's other strengths might be a good thing for the Vita version, good combat and good stealth are generally preferred to me over blockbuster spectacle.

i actually haven't seen the trailer! I didn't know there was one

gonna check it now

I am hyped especially with the changes they are doing with this game, but I need more reasons to get a Vita, just two (Gravity Rush and AC3:L)aren't enough for me.

There are 4 games on Vita I want (AC3L, Uncharted GA, HSG6, LBP). I don't consider COD or Bioshock as I haven't seen or read anything about them. There are possibly more games I want like PSAB, but the problem for me is not the games, it's the fact that Sony seems to be ignoring it + the opinion that I have that mobile devices should come with on board storage in 2012. Whenever there's a redesign with on board storage, I'll probably pick it up.

Read the Demo Impressions too
In broad strokes, the game plays similarly to other Assassin's Creed games. As I watched, the protagonist, a Creole woman named Aveline, crept along a rooftop above some Spanish guards—in the game's setting of New Orleans, the Spanish and French are fighting, and the Spanish are the Templar bad guys. In true Assassin's Creed fashion, Aveline took a couple of them down in one flying leap.

What happened next was a surprise, though. The action paused, the color faded, and icons lit up over the remaining soldiers. My demonstrator then tagged the soldiers using the Vita's touch screen, and Aveline automatically wiped them out, one at a time.

This power, called a "chain kill," isn't some one-time-only superpower; it's something players can do whenever they want, and is designed to let players who don't want to deal with long swordfights bypass them.

Of course, it's optional, so if you want a more challenging experience, you can forgo the chain kills. Interestingly enough, the chain kills seem to have been added because the core combat has (actually!) been made more difficult. Ubisoft giveth, and Ubisoft taketh away.

The added difficulty comes because there's no longer a perpetual block button—players can't just hold down the button and then mash the "counter" button to do an instakill. Instead, you have to feint and draw opponents out, then perform counters while remaining vulnerable to attack. I didn't have a chance to play the game, but as I watched my demonstrator get his ass kicked by some spanish guards, it became clear that he was unable to do the old Assassin's Creed block-parry two-step.

A few other things I noticed about the game:

Liberation has a dedicated jump button, the X button. The right trigger runs, but doesn't automatically jump at ledges—instead, you have to press X to jump. That's a big change from a series that typically hasn't had a real jump button.

I watched a sequence similar to more recent console games' horse and buggy chase sequences; the demonstrator tapped the touch screen to increase the horses' speed and held his finger down to make them slow down. I'm unsold on how fun this would be, but then, I didn't like those sequences in the console games either.

The game will have an economy like in the console games, though it will be different and "exclusive to the Vita," whatever that means.

We have confirmation on the alligators in the bayou sections. There will be alligators. Alligators!

The top devs did the requisite fact-finding trip to New Orleans, and a lot of the city's famous buildings are looking mighty nice.

Aveline's animations are totally new, and use the same animation tools as Assassin's Creed III; Aveline has a lot of Connor's moves, including pulling up an enemy as a human shield when faced with gunmen.

Aveline has a machete, which I didn't see used, and a blow-gun, which I did. While she was in one of the series' ubiquitous haystacks, she fired off a dart that poisoned one guard, luring another over to his location for a good neck-stabbing.

The characters in the game are all based on real historical figures, with the exception of Aveline herself; she's an amalgamation. If a character in the game dies, they died in real life at the same time.

Hopefully this is the game that can prove to devs and publishers that the Vita is quite capable and worthy of its own games or how easy it is to port an engine to it.

I haven't been able to keep up but does Liberation have MP? If it does, then it would be my go-to AC game for MP since playing it on-the-go whenever I'm bored would be amazing. Either way, I'm getting both so here's to hoping for a bundle deal for the two games.

Anyone else find it weird having a black leading character? Especially a female one? How am I supposed to identify with her? :S

Even if it's sarcasm, you're about to take this thread down a very bad road. Just a heads up.

I think there's very few characters that people actually identify with. It's all about the actions and stories of the characters that draw us in.

I'm more excited about New Orleans more than anything else. To have a whole new city for the game is HUGE to me and pretty much the same setting is actually even better since the two games relate to one another. When they talk about exploration in AC3 with the woods, I got really excited as it's something I've said they would do since they announced the setting and everyone was bitching about no large buildings. I knew it'd be a new type of exploration since the frontier offers a lot of new gameplay, but then my mind went crazy as I pictured all the different wilderness settings that the game could have had but couldn't due to location. Now this game has the swampland just like I was picturing and it has me hyped.

Looked like it was just AssCreed 3 with a lady.

This was also my first impression when I saw it on the Sony conference. After seeing those screens though it's hard not to be impressed. The Vita needs some good games so hopefully this turns out to be one of them.

I haven't been interested in a new Assassin's Creed game since AC2, now I'm psyched for both games coming out this Fall.

I'm just mocking some posters in a recent thread is all. I'm actually very interested in this game, not sure if it's worth the price of a Vita though.
