I'm pretty sure that you do have full 3D control when you're not in the 2D areas. The game just locks you in when you're running full speed because if it didn't it would be a lot harder to make those turns. Pretty sure Adventure 2 does it too but since you're moving slower it doesn't need to lock you in as hard.

2 is great. I really enjoyed the game, my only issue with it is that it slogs a little bit around the 1/3 mark, but other than that I think I preferred it to the first game.
