Shirrako: Until Dawn Remake is a technical mess

All these Sony remakes make no sense. Who asked for this or the horizon remake? And I don't forget how they unlisted the Horizon Forbidden West from their PS+ subscription and how they doubled the Zero Dawn's price after the Remaster announcement. Fuck Sony with these cheap tactics.
Make sense for Sony bank accounts.

It looks shockingly atrocious. Character models have been downgraded, their eyes and facial mo-cap looks noticeably worse and the entire color pallet is orange now for some fucking reason.

All they needed to do was bump the texture quality and resolution, but no, they completely ruined it.

I wish the original release didn't have physics bugs when played on PS5. Maybe the PS5 Pro will somehow correct that by accident.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

The opening takes place in sunlight now?

Not sure if I like some of the color grading / lighting differences, hmm.

They didn't "need" to do anything. They wanted to remake it and did, leaving you with the option to not buy it.

They also didn't ruin the original as that still exists. How it fairs next to this video? I'll report back after I've had a few hours with it, but I know it hasn't been downgraded without even looking at that video. All assets have been rebuilt, so preference =! downgrade.

Fucking hell. The warmer color palette does not help at all. Also, why did they have to change the camera... it was so good... -_-

They changed the colour from spooky Friday the 13th to Gladiator copper. Weird choice.

What probably happened is if they kept the original dark black/grey/blue hues, you couldnt see any improved details because it's too dark. So they brightened it up.

Why is it that when people look to compare things they always go to pre-rendered cutscenes of the old thing to diminish the really more important improvements to in-game graphics?

Played about an hour and so far seems good. Some brief hitching, audio mix seems weird (for me at least) in terms of volume levels and the odd small dialogue just being skipped or missing. Some faces have looked awkward in certain scenes but nothing major.
Graphically, it looks great in some places and good in others. I had to turn off 1 of the other shadow settings as shadows were popping and fading in like crazy. The shadows also look quite low resolution too, but I don't know if it's another setting I need to tweak (everything is maxed out apart from the previously mentioned optional shadow effect). I am playing in 32:9 aspect ratio so that maybe could also be an issue.
Regarding 32:9, I had to change the aspect ratio to "Free" to get it to fill the screen (it filled the screen on the main menu, but playing in game it switched to 21:9) The biggest pain was the seemingly optional PSN sign in, as I kept having to ALT Tab as it didn't pop up over the game screen and I kept getting that Windows error sound, but nothing crashed. It was just a bit messy. I don't know if it's a stylistic choice, but the subtitles can sometimes have this weird effect on them, making them break and kinda get distorted. I don't remember that from the original, but could be normal.
Some, I'm guessing, DLSS or frame gen can cause some pixelated effects for a few seconds on lighting and shadows. Haven't had an issue with colours etc The game still looks like I remember it so far, blue-ish and dark outside, while the Doctors room has started off warm and calm, while using HDR.

There are differences already with extra scenes and character placements etc but nothing drastic. The songs are different too, but nothing offensive yet, at least to me. Character models have changed slightly too on some characters and their voices seem a bit different, especially the Doctor. I haven't played the game since PS4 days, so maybe my memory is not accurate. Overall, looking forward to jumping back in.

Is anyone playing this on PS5 here, how does the remake handle gyro stuff?

The don't move? as expected.
Speaking of the changed in the beginning now there's a little daylight now which some aren't happy with but some of the stuff they say makes more sense now "get to the cabin before it gets dark"
"I forgot how beautiful it was here"
When you play the original you're left asking wtf you on about 😂
And yes there is a problem with the intro when Sam is on the Bus, you can see it in the videos the way it jerks around, hopefully they fix it fast
Other then that it seems fine so far, they expanded some areas too.

The further in you play, the more the palette looks like the original. I get Chapter 1's changes, though and it makes more sense.

Also, in terms of the visuals, this is a considerable step up and it isn't a 1:1 Remake (which is cool). Not without bugs, though.

No way to turn those off?

I hated those, always led to unwanted deaths in the very final part of the game in the cabin.
Yes there's another option that involves the analogue stick
But it's not like the original, you don't move and it stays put.
The original wobbled all over the place because it was look at the light on the controller.

Sony will authorize the dumbest shit, the dumbest executives could possibly think of, before they would authorize Bloodborne Sequel/Remastered/Remake

I hope they meet the same fate as Ubisoft, I really can't stand this modern PlayStation

Really cant think of a more unnecessary remake. This must be some high executive son/daughter favorite game or something.

Don't buy this game
Sony is betraying us real fans, who bought this game back in 2015 for the PlayStation 4. It is a betrayal to us real fans, a literal stab in the back. What is next? Stellar Blade? Astro Bot? Bloodborne? Let Sony take an L and regret this decision. We can see what happened to the last multiplatform game (Concord). Keep it PlayStation exclusive!

PlayStation will always be the definite platform to play Until Dawn.

Some PlayStations fanboys are just too much. :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:

I've been a loyal Sony gamer since the original PSX and this remake is a disgrace. It barely beats the original that came out 10 years ago on 14-year-old hardware and they have the shame to put it on sale at 70€. Sony, careful, greed breaks the camel's back.

Stevivor gave it a 3.5/10 🙄 I’m not even going to link to it because that guy is so blatantly clickbait, I don’t know how he got a Top Critic rating from OpenCritic

Playing this on PC... has a 3+ minute pre-shader compilation step during the initial load (and seems to verify the shaders on subsequent loads)... has RT features that do not appear to work so that's bug numero uno... also has hitches and stutters despite compiling the shaders at the start. Performance is also all over the place on my i5-13600KF, 32 GB, RTX 4080 FE, Windows 11 Pro 24H2 PC playing at maxed out 1440p settings using the latest 565.90 driver from NVIDIA. It seems like the game isn't optimised properly and is lacking in overall polish which is disappointing.

I'm also not too keen on some of the lighting changes and lip syncing seems to be a bit off, which just emphasises the exaggerated mouth animations all the more, especially during the first bit with Dr. Hill (made me think of Wallace & Gromit for some reason!). Not a terrible game, the fundamentals are still there and it is fun, but it's not amazing either considering this is supposed to be a full-on remake. The only reason this game exists is to sell it on PC as there really is no reason otherwise to buy this game if you have a PS5 as a perfectly fine edition of the game already exists from the PS4 and chances are you will already have received this free.

Considering the PS5 Pro will have some of sort of Boost mode for PS4 games, Sony could just have easily enhanced the original PS4 version for the new console rather than committing to a new version. It seems most of the work that went into this was in porting it over from the Decima Engine to Unreal Engine 5 which begs the question of why they didn't just stick with Decima? It looks gorgeous in Horizon: Forbidden West and that engine already runs fantastic on PS5.

His review sounds like he copied and pasted some of the comments on here.
It's true the intro has got a bug that makes it stutter but besides that I haven't seen anything else in my playthrough that would warrant immediate attention.

And with that said Ballistic Moon does seem to be getting a lot of stick for a team that met a deadline despite losing staff a month before release.

Yeah, it's just that initial cutscene. Otherwise, outside of a few smaller bugs (and one audio one I encountered), it's pretty good and the graphics are ridiculous!

At least it appears the patch has fixed some things.
Update: A patch, downloaded today after the publishing of our initial review, has cleaned up some choppiness and framerate issues. Nevertheless, our assessment of the package still stands.

It does. The art style and therefore the atmosphere from the original is much better. Glad i already played it in my peasant times.
You can prefer the aesthetics, but it does not look graphically worse than the original.

Besides, the artstyle is the same. Only the opening chapter has been changed, and considering the dialogue, said change makes sense. All other areas are dramatically improved, from the lighting, fog/smoke effects, fur, larger texture maps and on and on.

Even the Pro can't fix that.

In terms of performance, the game sometimes feels like sub-30 FPS to me. I also had a funny bug where Mike walked through the sanatorium at super speed. I only had one crash on my first playthrough.

But what really bothers me is the raised black level. By deactivating the film grain this is already much better. But it still just looks bad, especially when using flashlights etc..

State of gaming is so sad these days, risk averse everything and just remastering shit that no one asked for.
I've seen a ton of requests for a patch for Until Dawn, because it didn't even see an upgrade for the PS4 Pro. I really wish that the game had been updated for the PS4 Pro because then it would have just been incredible on the PS5 and wouldn't have needed any adjustments.

Sony execs: "Should we patch some improvements for the PS4 version and call it a remaster with a $10 upgrade or put out a full price remake that everyone hates? :pie_thinking:"

adamsapple

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
For some reason Opencritic are adding reviews for the game on the original PS4 versions page, they don't have a dedicated page for this new release, even though this is a full-on remake, not a re-release.

Bizarre.

Trust you to post a Stevivor review.

Watched a few minutes of this and my takeaway is that Supermassive Games are better at this than people thought. The way the characters look and move doesn't feel nearly as natural as it does in their games. It all looks a bit janky in comparison.

The animations are literally recycled from the old code (and the only things that are). It's all of Supermassive's original "jank", only difference is it is more noticeable now because of the improvements with newer releases.
