I like her design apart from her eyebrows almost always make her look like she's worrying.
She's not as flirtatious looking either. She is in what she says or how she says it but her expressions don't give it off as much.
She's also meant to be 25 years old but I'd say she looks later 30's.

I think the praise are for how they upgraded the combat, if this was the combat in the old one and they made no improvement to it i don't think people would praise it that much.

It is not an exceptional combat system in any way, shape or form except maybe the sound design, it is just much better than the absolute basic system they had in the first game.
I hear ya.

I'm not coming from a place in which I want to take the remake down a notch. I'm excited to play it. I've expressed my issues with the voice acting/bloober in general but that won't affect the gameplay/atmosphere and that's what I'm excited to experience when I play it next week.

My goal is to simply see how Homecoming's combat feels compared to the SH2 remake. If the similarities are there and I can display it via gifs and other things, its absolutely worth making a thread for the lulz and to call people out who always shat on it. Like the vast majority of my posts, it's largely in jest and just for fun.

Hopefully this time next week I will be booting up the remake for my initial playthrough. I'm pretty stoked for it. Game is absolutely gorgeous based on what I've seen so far.

Don't get me wrong I liked AITD enough to play through it twice but it's a totally different league - this is hitbox-based melee and feels incredibly janky and impactless in comparison to the animation connecting system of the Remake. Shooting is ok but I don't recall both systems having real synergy.

SH2R brilliantly expands upon a very limited set of mechanics by introducing new enemies that require a different approach to using them, so it feels very simple at the core but deep enough to remain engaging, challenging and tense, at least on "hard". Blood effects and hit reactions are on another level and that's without even mentioning 10/10 audio and haptics...

I'll give you an example: Lying figure is your basic bitch that teaches you dodging and punishes you for spamming attack if you hit it more than twice is succession. Has a projectile to outmaneuver, best strat is melee with dodge sidestep dance and then beat to death when on the ground. Bit later you face Mannequins, that are undetectable by the radio when hiding in pitch dark for a surprise (heart) attack. When spotted however and aimed at - they charge at you and make your flashlight malfunction! Melee is very risky here since they dodge your attacks just as much as you dodge theirs, so the best approach is to shoot them, ideally in the legs which stuns them so you can go in for a melee finisher. They make you explore dark areas slowly with your gun on constant aim taking every dark corner as are very susceptible to gunfire which has a lot of stopping power against their attacks. But then you introduced to Nurses where your gun has zero stopping power, unless you land a headshot they keep charging at you and are just super lethal in tight corridors... but can be stealth-killed, dropped and beat to death when approached from the back. However in order to do that - you have to switch off your flashlight! Otherwise, they will detect you, turn around and you're fucked. I could go on but we're constantly here at technically 4 basic combat actions - attack, dodge, aim, and shoot.

Homecoming's on the other hand is a 15 year old game which got a lot of shit for it's combat even back when it was new, I didn't hate it, saving grace is above-average enemy hit reactions but at the end, with some exceptions, it mostly comes down to rushing in and light attack spamming every enemy to death with your knife.
Great post. Appreciate the detailed write up.

Combat is without a doubt improved but IMO they went a bit overboard with the amount of enemies later on in the game to the point it almost becomes a beat'em up. :messenger_winking_tongue:

At least on hard.

I wouldn't consider it a problem at all. There's more variety that then the original.
Ok but the game is also way longer, i heard people saying 15 to 20 hours, wasn't the original as long as your typical survival horror (6 to 8 hours)?!

I'm like 4 hours in and i only fought 2 type of enemies (3 if you consider the scarab but cmon) but my post was more about what i heard about enemy variety, i don't know the total number or even if it is true.

Mmm hmm, it wouldn't hold as a full priced title if it was still <10 hours. They fluffed it up with bigger areas, updated boss fights, etc.

I gotcha. I loved the original, and loved the remake. In the end, everything felt like an improvement which is all I could ever want in a remake personally. But I guess if you're going in expecting a lot more of anything you may be disappointed, but this was never meant to be that type of game in the first place IMO.

Sure, i wasn't saying that the remake is bad or anything like that, it's a great survival horror from what i played, and if enemy variety is not that big, so be it.

I take a few good enemies over more numerous shitty enemies.

So far my play time shows 27 hours and Im not even out of the prison.

I blame it on searching everywhere high and low for stuff and taking pictures
Join the club. I blame it on playing it on hard as well. I’m actually getting a bit burned out by the amount of enemies in the prison and tempted to switch to normal. I specially hate the new variant of the spider mannequins. They’re too creepy to begin with. As if being below the pits of hell and under the abyss with no light wasn’t enough.

The prison is too oppressive. I love my horror shit but this is just slightly too much. I’m taking a lot of breaks and playing GT7 to lighten up the mood.

You and I are probably similar in that when reviews say "you can expect an 8-10 hour playthrough..." and you're already 15 hours in and the PS5 says you're 66% done. Lol.

Whats the rush?!?!?!?

Just got to the first save point in the first otherworld section.

What a game. After a couple of hours of play I can feel the dreading sensation creeping up on me. It's such a bad trip it's - almost - addicting.

Still stand by what I though so many years ago: best game to ever capture the feeling of being in a dream-like state, slowly descending into madness.

If only it was a little bit more polished it would have been perfect. Still, I can't believe I can't to re-experience SH2 basically from scratch.

It really does feel like you're in the depths of your worst nightmares. I feel exactly the same way. I'll probably need to throw in some Epic Mickey or Persona to brighten things up a bit tonight :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Did you fucking rewrite the code and add areas yourself goddamn!

:messenger_tears_of_joy: First time ever playing it so I really really took my time soaking it all in and taking pics. It's not like Im bad at games (like I havent even died in SH2 yet) I just like taking my time with certain titles, especially remakes of stuff that I missed out on back in the day.

Another example, that Shadow of the Colossus remake definitely took me like, double what it should take a normal person :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I have 0 problems affirming that the later areas in this remake are the scariest environments known to mankind in video games. And a lot of it is sound design, sure. You’re basically underneath hell itself for very, very long stretches of time.

You’re in the abyss with the whore of Babylon overseeing you.

It absolutely gets under my skin.

And I love it.

For anyone who poop socked this game this past week, how well done was the alien play through/ending? Creepier than the OG?

Can anyone say if this video does a good job at what it sets out to do? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth play this before I get an RT card. If this is accurate, I don't see a big reason to wait.

what do we think?
They should make the SH2 DLC "Born from a Wish" before even thinking of other games.

I really think they should remake the first game next. It seems like the next logical step unless they want to do something completely original.

I would think that most newbies are going to come into SH2R and leave thinking "What about the first one?" "What happened before this?"

Alright boys, we got Homecoming stacked on top of Homecoming. Yes, that is the Official PS3 theme for the game.

Happy Silent Hill gaming everyone. What a time to be alive! Like with any beloved franchise, there are going to differences of opinion amongst enthusiasts. I think we can all agree that Homecoming and SH2 remake are in competition for the best combat system within the series, right????

lol.
