So Sony did not give Jahtzee (Zero Punctuation) a review copy of Ratchet & Clank because they don't like his style.

As if people did not buy the games he made fun of. Actually, they probably did buy the games, because he made fun of them.

As if this was a one-way street. Somebody at Sony probably got butthurt, especially after the Last of Us 2 review and now they don't like his style anymore.

But he did videos for other Sony exclusives after TLoU2, for example - Demon's Souls, Returnal, etc. It seems unlikely that TLoU2 was the tipping point.

Maybe not, or maybe it just took its time. The argument "we don't like your style" after sending somebody review copies and accepting his style for over 10 years seems arbitrary.

Yahtzee is a game critic, not a reviewer. He's said this himself many times. Perhaps that's what was meant by "tone of that coverage"? It's hard to say given how little information we have. It may have been something that has built up over time on Sony's end or it could be they just didn't want that tone for this one game.

The game titles were about butt jokes in the past, one of them was named quest for booty.

Why did I reply?

Because, son - it's FUCKING hilarious watching you guys having an aneurysm over who said 'PC master race' first.
I'm sure you are laughing with those triggered posts dude.
You must be having so much fun writing with capital letters, you are totally not invested.

I was thinking more about the "critical" part of game critic, not the juvenile humour found in the game titles and sometimes in Yahtzee's videos. Though, like you, I'm just guessing.

How broke you are to pay a videogame on your own and review it by yourself

The privelege of some self-absorbed entitled people here ffs so desperate for recognition and fame

he doesn't really review games tho does he? he makes funny little animations with overly dramatized opinions on them... so why should he get a review copy if he doesn't review the game?

the force awakens GIF by Star Wars

It's been that way for years, Sony has no obligation to send code to anyone let alone a satirical channel...

BTW I doubt most studios send Cinema Sins movie tickets ;)

The only reason to send out free review copies is to get advertising. If they don't care for his content anymore, it's their bridge to burn.

No one is entitled to get products from a company for free.

" They said that, quote, "Given the tone of that coverage, we'd prefer you secure your own code." From where, Sony, the fucking dumpster outside your office?"

Buy your own like everyone else? They don't owe you anything, e-reviewer
You can't buy it for review pre release. Hence the late review.

Making a thing out of not getting a free "review" copy is the saddest shit.
This is why I 99% avoid watching reaction/dumb shit on YouTube.

Just ban publisher review copies outright somehow and let everyone buy their own at launch. We would be better off if reviews didn't release on launch day. You might not be warned early about overhyped stinkers but we would enjoy our other games more.

Any videogame media personality crying that they didn't get a free pre-release copy of a videogame from a publisher is just a whiny entitled wanker.

Buy your own copy. You know... like the rest of us gamers do.

Maybe then, you'd have a vested interest to actually finish the game too before you start writing your review.

I would be devastated if I expected to get a ps5 game for free but didn't and then had to pay for it like everyone else. Stay strong yahtzee it gets easier

As usual Yahtzee is spot on, witty and concise. Whoever at Sony who handles PR for the escapist needs to grow some thicker skin.

Biggest in Europe and Asia? Never heard of him.

He's been around since 2007. You don't see him mentioned as much these days as when he first started. His style really hasn't shifted all that much since then and he does play up the negative aspects of games as part of his humor (there is a grain of truth in every joke) and in today's climate, that could be considered taboo among his peers. I think not really being into social media has let him keep being himself. He's a published author and has made games. He's easily one of the smarter people doing reviews for mainstream outlets, even if his reviews are more for entertainment purposes.

I think the point he was trying to make is that they stopped giving him codes now and it is due to his style. Which is parody and tongue in cheek.

The fact Sony is worried about his obviously purposely hilarious reviews is really concerning.
Why? Why is it concerning that Sony is doing the same thing they have done since the PS1?

Considering he covered Returnal, Demon Souls (I think he got his PS5 well after launch though), Ghost of Tsushima, and The Last of Us and never mentioned anything, my guess is this is a recent change on Sony's part. If it were Ubisoft or David Cage, I can understand boycotting Yahtzee but this just seems thin skinned by whoever is handling PR.

Again "drama" over literally nothing! Do guys also take Honest Trailers and CinemaSins as "serious" reviews for your movies as well?

I really like Zero Punctuations reviews and to me he depicts real picture of the games if you can understand that.

and this is not a news. If I was into old school rock I wouldn't send my copy to EDM reviewers also. Sony is not obliged to send a single review copy to anyone.

I'd say ZP is more insightful than 99% of other "serious" reviews.
Sorry I never go to him for actual reviews, they are much better reviewers can be both funny and give me proper information.

It isn't "thin-skinned". It's a business making a business decision. If Sony decided to go with a different film production studio to shoot their commercials, would you be crying about how thin-skinned or unfair that is? Or would you understand Sony the publisher is making a business decision?

This is the part you don't get. Yahtzee is just a way for Sony, or any game company to advertise. That is what all review copies are.

Whether or not this dude got previous games is irrelevant. If Sony decided that R&C would not benefit from a review, than that is fine. Yahtzee isn't entitled to anything. He has no authority or weight.

Publishers do this all the time. They tailor their advertising to groups and people they think will be excited for their product.

So what is improper in his R&C review? I can understand not going to him for reviews. I don't really go to anyone for reviews these days.

I actually didn't watch that, I barely watch his reviews and few of them I did watch is him complain over petty things just for sake of comedy. Maybe if you are "jaded" gamer then maybe you would like his stuff, but not for me.

H
Do you? You and others seem to think this dude is entitled to free stuff. He isn't

You do understand that his publication received review codes prior, right? You know, "free stuff". You do realize Yahtzee's tone has been the same since 2007, right? Something changed and he mentioned it because it delayed the timeliness of his review. "OMG he thinks he's entitled to free stuff."

Maybe you are a "too self serious" gamer. :p

If you know your own taste in games then most of the time you don't need reviews, Do I really need review to tell me if SMT5 is worth buying or not?

Maybe you are a "too self serious" gamer. :p
If he was remotely funny then I would watch it like I do watch Honest Trailer and have fun.....Maybe you see humour in his stuff but I just don't, sorry. 🤷‍♂️

Yup, I stream periodically. Really just to keep up with distant pals, and? Did I hurt your feelings? 🤷‍♂️

I was just saying I didn't know Yahtzee was still relevant. Haven't heard about him in a very, very long time.

How dare you not have at least 641 viewers and 400 comments. Utter failures can't have commentary or opinions on things. If a doctor cut off your arm during a colonoscopy you certainly wouldn't have the gall to call him bad at his job, would you? It's not like YOU'RE a surgeon. FIE! The nerve.

Fixed so maybe you will start to understand.

whether or not he got copies in the past is irrelevant.

It could be as simple as Sony saying "this guys tone hasn't changed since 2007, and his audience demographic hasn't changed either. The Escapist doesn't engage the family oriented shoppers and young child demographics we want for RC. Instead of giving him free copies, let's give it to a mommy blogger, and increase advertising on children's programming."

that's how businesses actually think. It's not thin skinned

I generally like Yahtzee's content, however, calling what he does a "review" is being a bit generous.
