It's definitely weird they didn't announce it before the first use but maybe what you said plus PSX kind of being the perfect place for this kind of thing to get fully announced is what happened.
Yeah I'm surprised they didn't actually announce those Star Wars games, put the voucher in the Vader bundle as an incentive, but say they they can be redeemed sometime later in 2015. Have a blowout during PSX, SW downloadable on that same day.
We still couldn't be sure it they're ports or emulation, and they wouldn't spoil the surprise but still have the games announced.
As it stands, it's like you said they didn't announce the feature before the first use of it.
For some reason this concept makes people oddly angry, but I'm old enough to remember when this sort of thing was seen by Sony as part of their brand value. I'd love to see them get back to that; allowing PS2 discs to be played won't affect digital release sales any more than PS1 discs working in the PS3 did, so claiming this is impossible out of some shortsighted concept of what's "profitable" seems very foolish to me.
If it really comes down to it and there's no way to justify disc support as a pure freebie, just sell it as an unlock. I've certainly spent plenty of time advocating for the virtues of long-window backwards-compatibility, I'd be willing to drop $20 to unlock the emulator.
For reals though, you know what some of you new age kids need in your life from the PS2 era?
Assuming any of these are made PS4 compatible of course :X
For starters
Raidou 'gets shit done' Kuzunoha
Demon summoning and battling during 1920-30s Japan with dat Kaneko artstyle flair, boys and girls. You don't know the term 'style' is until you play a Kaneko art inspired game.
Need more Kaneko in your life? There's Digital Devil Survivor
Want more of Young Geese's sexiness? Immerse yourself with dat authentic top of the line Neo Geo zoom in that's a trademark of the Art of Fighting series
Now I know a lot of people will disagree, but it's a solid game regardless, grab dat King of Fighters MI Reg. A, it's one of the most underrated PS2 fighters of its time
I mean it has Makoto Mizoguchi how can you hate on that?
Now granted one needs a goddamn dictionary to navigate the thing, but SamSho 6 on PS2 has the most variety and gameplay options a fighting game could ever have
I'm not kidding each characters has like 6 versions and each one makes them play drastically different.
Also it has Iroha
Dunno if SNK's gonna release this on PS4, but if you can't wait def. check out Garou MotW, there is a REASON it's considered one of the best SNK fighters
Plus it's as easy to get into as Street Fighter II.
And don't even get me started on jRPGs, I dunno if or when these'll get their Eng. versions released, but ain't nothin' stoppin' you from diving into some good ol' PS2 era JRPGs kids, well aside from the moon speak the games use.
That's not even talking about the other cool SNK fighters on JP PSN
Heard some of you old peeps been in the mood for cathin' monkies, we got you covered
Ah and now here we got a nice sweet rarity, more rare than whatever the heck constitutes as rare in that Fate, Destiny, faith game shootbang thing y'all are all crazy about
This be a collection of various neo geo arcade games from the 90s made by ADK prior to merging with SNK. It has a game called Ninja Commando for crissake WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?!
Now it gets better, 2016 ain't enough jRPGs for you? Drop some Yen for dat Phantasy Star collection, it even comes with the Eng. releases of the games along with an art gallery!
Need dat 90s SEGA era action goodness? Look no further than the Treasure Box and Die hard ArcadeDynamite Cop 1
Oh yeah and this too
Can't wait for Pacific Rim 2? War of the monsters'll keep you entertained til that sucka drops
Even younglings need something to play on your PS4, grab these must have PS2 classics
One can never have enough Treasure in their lives, get in on dat STG Gradius goodness
You liked Resogun, you gonna love Gradius V
God Hand needs no introduction, don't act like you don't like the Ball Buster
PS2 was also home to many underrated titles include THe Red Star an action beat'em-up STG hybrid
I hear this game has voice acting that puts all PS4 and PS3 games to utter shame and I am inclined to agree
It ain't Curse of Darkness but far as adventure action games go it gets the job done IMO
Before Call of Booty, before Battlefront there was CONTRA and the world knew greatness then thus let it know greatness once more
Few are the good movie video games made over the decades, but ask anyone and they'll tell you The Warriors ranks among the best
Why waste dropping $60 on a new WWE when you can not only get the best wrestling game of the past 2 decades, but one that has a community that provides an updated list of custom wrestlers
Everybody needs Katamari in their live, lalalalalalah~
Now I can't vouch for the camera, but the action and style in this game is worth experiencing
Thought I'd forgot about it did you? Shin Megami Tensei 3 cannot go unmentioned, you literally can punch the devil in the face.
At first when I read this thread title I got excited, but then... I remember where Sony is sitting right now. I honestly feel like overconfident Sony is back and I think they will go half-assed into this response to Xbox BC. If they manage to make it free with owned games via disc-based emulation, then... wow. That would be huge.
I doubt Sony really care about what MS is doing this generation, let alone knee-jerk reacting to them. They have a road map of their own, they don't need a crayon-scrawled version that keeps changing so they can follow MS's lead.
Like I theorized ages ago I still think these classics will not be crossbuy. With them pushing higher resolutions and embedding trophy support they have ample excuse to ask the consumer to pay again. It sucks but its what I expect at this point.

The hell does this have to do with anything dude? Competition had no bearing on a feature that has been heavily and frequently rumored to be in development since launch.

I wouldnt count on a discounted price either. Upping the resolution alone might be considered enough reason for a premium price let alone adding trophies. Just don't get your hopes up and be realistic.

I think it'd be really weird thing for them to do that though after fostering the mentality that a purchased 'classic' title will go with you on to various platforms current and future for almost a decade now. Not only that but Sony has been supplying cross-buy titles for awhile now, which includes titles that retroactively became cross-buy and allowed previous owners of games like Flower, Sound Shapes, or Journey to download a free copy of their games running at higher resolutions and framerates on the PS4. It's always possibly they could charge but given their history with handling stuff like this, I don't think it's likely.

I disagree, I think that BC for the PS1 and PS2 will be Crossbuy.
I have several PS1 games I got as a digital download on PS3, and so far I could play it on PS3, PSP, PS Vita. I expect the same would be playable on PS4, PS5, PS6,
Likewise, if PS2 games can be bought as a digital download on PS4, I expect full BC on PS5, PS6, etc.

I don't think it's Sony but more like if third parties would agree. Remember even for XB1's XB360 emulation requires publisher's permission (& testing presumably) to be compatible. For example I personally can't imagine any Japanese third party pubs agreeing their JRPG being emulated on new console, without granting them more revenue (this is just from my ass btw).

Xbox One doesn't play games from the disc, it uses discs as a key and downloads a digital version of the backwards compatible title in question. If the PS2 backwards compatibility does have local disc-based emulation this shouldn't be an issue.
But at that time devs or pubs had do to nothing to make them compatible with PS3. This time there's trophy implementation that I doubt Sony would do it for third parties, so they have to pay their personnel to do it. And to make payment they have to have some sort of revenue.
Now the best scenario is like trophy support addition sold separately like for $5, but I think that's going too far.

They should really just let us play the traditional, 480p, no trophy version of the games from disc, and let us buy the enhanced versions. I'll happily pay for versions of these games with enhanced resolution and other features. My concern isn't about having to pay more for games I already own, it's about the fact that I know there's a ton of games I own that won't be offered digitally, and having gimped backwards compatibility that only plays a small selection of games is so lame.
