Sony confirms PS2 emulation coming to PS4

They should really just let us play the traditional, 480p, no trophy version of the games from disc, and let us buy the enhanced versions. I'll happily pay for versions of these games with enhanced resolution and other features. My concern isn't about having to pay more for games I already own, it's about the fact that I know there's a ton of games I own that won't be offered digitally, and having gimped backwards compatibility that only plays a small selection of games is so lame.

If third party have to do nothing for compatibility addition plus they aren't planning any re-release or putting it on PSN then yeah I agree. TBH there are some companies who are now dead that they can't even have talk with Sony to make digital version, so no value-added compatibility may be required for those type of games.

The licensing aspects of old Playstation games between different regions make it such a clusterfuck if we have to rely on companies releasing them on PSN instead of it being disc-based.

Just look at the PS2 selection on EU PSN versus US PSN. It's such a travesty.

I really, really hope for disc based emulation for one simple reason.

Being able to play Silent Hill 2 in HD without having to slum it with the travesty that is the 'remaster' Konami shat out in their official collection.

But I'll also happily take digital only too, as long as it gets a decent sized library and games already bought get carried forward with crossbuy.

This becomes even more complex if in-game tunes are registered separately.

They own games made for real PS2 but not for emulated and enhanced game meant for PS4.

Emulators always add enhancements. At least PC emulators for NES, SNES, PSX etc...

It's not necessarily a waste of time to have a digital library of PS2 games only but it's definitely a massive step down from disc-based emulation (or a solution ala MS's on XB1). After all, a feature like this is primarily for diehards of old PSX/PS2 games.

Serious question:

Then I'd like to pay once for the emulator, not re-buy every game individually.

I know it won't happen, but still...

As neat as it'd be to support PS1/PS2 discs, I'm fine with Nintendo's rule of only going one previous gen back with their physical support, so long as the digital support is good enough (which is and has been Nintendo's problem for a long time).

That means bringing across most of the current classics library, cross-buy and consistent new releases.

Was this also a hidden announcement with FF7 last PSX?

It feels like Sony/Square 2 for 1'd us lol

Sony with PS2 emulation and Square with FF7 Remake.

In the BC PS3, it is literally a PS1/PS2 chip playing the game natively.

On the PS4, I don't believe it had PS1/PS2 chips, so the enhancements should be far better, but it should also take more computing power.

I really wished it was ps3 backwards compatibility :( PS2 is still nice though.

The PS4 doesn't have native PS3 chips, and it had nowhere near the power to do emulation. So maybe PS3 emulation on PS5? If they use AMD x86 and GPU, I also foresee PS4 BC natively.

The thing that excites me most is using SharePlay with these games. Imagine Sony is able to sell Crash Team Racing (come on Activision!) on the PSN store on PS4. With SharePlay, you can turn that essentially into an online multiplayer game!

IMO, disk based or bust. I don't see many people paying twice for the games they already bought on the ps2.

I would gladly rebuy my entire PS2 library if it means I can play it on PS4+

The same way that my PS One digital games was playable on PS3, PSP, and PS Vita, and probably PS4 soon.

XB360 emulation works on XBO. And don't tell me that the Cell is too complicated. It was very similar to the PPC CPU in the 360 and the jaguar cores in the current gen consoles are the same, so there is no reason that it shouldn't work.

Really? The ps4 is more powerful than the ps3 I would find it hard to believe it is not capable of emulating it. The ps4 doesn't have the native ps2 chip either so it could use the same method for ps3. I was thinking the Ps4 could sandbox the emulator in the ps4 or something :/

I wouldn't necessarily say that (though it would be really nice to not have to hook up my PS2 just to play my PS1 and PS2 games) but I would be pretty disappointed if it didn't support digital PS1/PS2 games already owned on PSN.

If trophies are mandatory this service is dead already, because most publishers from that era will have no budget or motivation to go back to these games. That's if they are even still in business.

I suggest people expecting obscure titles from the darkest corners of the PS2 catalogue reign in their expectations a long way.

The PS3 is a really hard system to emulate. Hell, it was a hard system to develop for. The CELL chip makes it really hard, if not impossible, for the ps4 to emulate.

Great news! Hopefully this also means PS1 BC by default.

"Everybody wants it, no one uses it" is so apt.

What they should do is make PS emulation PS+. That way it's just disc based, and they're making money off it. And the player gets to play any game

;_;

Likewise, people expecting disc based emulation should reign in expectations.

Expect digital PSN BC, anything more is gravy, but don't pin your hopes and dreams on anything more than Digital downloads for PS2 games.

I hope we get shit loads of PS2 classics instead of a small selection like we saw on PS3. There are so many games I would love to play again, or for the first time and in 1080p no less.

At this point it'd be far better for everyone out there for them to just get it up as a digital download. That way people don't have to pay stupid prices in order to get a copy.

I am hoping they adjust prices accordingly.

$10 for PS2 games
$5 for PS1 games

Simple and clean, no guilt for us rebuyers.

The mere thought of potentially being able to play Shadow Hearts: Covenant on my PS4 makes me super excited.

Okay, now I really want that disk based emulation. Please Sony, I still have the disc somewhere in my house.
I'll still buy it from PSN if they don't support it.

Wow, those SMT and ATLUS games and JRPG playable on PS4 with trophy support. Suikoden!!! ::droll::

Stop hoping for disc-based emulation, guys stahp.

I think a significant portion are realistic and expect digital download only BC for PS2 games.

The other portion have good dreams, and I look forward to the rage thread once reality hits.

PS2 games are already $9.99, and PS1 games just $1 more than you're wanting. It's just a few jerks / "special" games that break that pricing.

Bleh, it should be across the board. Special means nothing when no one buys a copy because it is overpriced

I feel like a lot of people in this thread are going to be disappointed with the expectations they have. If this ends up being digital only, I'm going to need to upgrade my HDD again. I have about 100 gigs left on my 1tb drive.
