Sony looking to expand PlayStation Studios titles to Xbox and Nintendo, according to Job Listing

Now that Sony's going third party, Nintendo has officially won the perennial console war

There can be only one :messenger_fire: :messenger_fire: :messenger_fire:

Sony fucked up when they bundled Horizon with the PS4 consoles and abandoned Killzone, their best IP. But looking at who's in charge now, it all makes sense.

Sony is just another American company that thinks it's still a Japanese company.

So what's changed. In their earnings call to shareholders they said their gaas support would reach other platforms. They also stated their legacy titles will remain the primary focus and with strategic titles going to pc.

A move like this would have had to be mentioned in that same earnings call as something like this could impact their shares negatively. They can't just make such a call without them knowing about it.

Circana are probably among those who advised Sony to head down this road. Same goes for the rut we see before us happening in western AAA. If this goes significantly beyond GAAS, it will eventually begin to erode the brand and platform trust.

Friendly reminder that Hulst still has a job and you shouldn't be happy about that.
Hulst has a tendency of saying something in one side of his mouth and something else from the other. People should see that by now.

I'd say that's probly gaas just because what kind of sales are you trying to pick up on xbox consoles at this point.

Their pc strategy is not going to be a good thing in the long haul. They rake in money on their own platform and then port almost all of the headliners to pick up a few million more sales -30%. Incredibly short-sighted. I'd love to have been on some of the calls where someone attempted to argue against it. They'd have to be even dumber to do xbox but that's only a matter of degrees at this point.

More evidence that their focus is still in live service games.

If you are expecting Sony to go back to single player games on PS6 you'll be very disappointed. They will crash their business to the ground, before they realize that chasing GaaS is the most stupid thing they have ever done, and will ever do.

Numbers without context. How many games Horizon Zero Dawn would compete in Nintendo ecosystem? How many times Horizon got discount while Nintendo first party never do and still beat their asses?
You already had a taste of how well Horizon franchise did on others plataforms, but somehow is always ignored.

Big numbers not always tell shit. Sony first party games get discount all the bloody time. I lost the count of how many times Horizon Zero Dawn got discount in Brazil, a country that ask R$399,90 for games, ask R$90 or less for Horizon. I even got a digital copy of Horizon for free from Playstation, can you believe I have a physical copy and digital version of Horizon Zero Dawn? I hope this doesn't enter into the sales metric.

This is like saying Mcdonalds burgers are the best because sell more than any other.
Lots of words to try and move the goalpost.

This idea that a franchise is not good because you personally don't like it is just utterly misguided, I don't like the idea of Gears of War, but I won't be coming out claiming it's not a big franchise.

Such an amazing thread, whenever I feel low or want to laugh out, I enter these threads. The jokes and sarcasm GAF posts through popular gifs convey a much deeper, lingering sadness sometimes and I'm so sorry but I keep laughing like Jim Ryan!

They're seeing how much money Microsoft's making from it from very little effort. FH5 sales alone an old game dropped on PS5 has now fully funded the FH6 development costs.

I'm sure Sony can see the GaaS spending.

It's honestly a no brainer, who cares where we play as long as we have larger player pools.

If you have doubts, the link to the job listing is in the OP, you can read it for yourself.

I read through the listing and, unless I missed something, there's no mention of multiplayer or games as a service, nor is there any coded language pointing to this being exclusively for GaaS games. There's really nothing here that hints at what games are being ported, as far as I can tell.
Multiplat can referred just to pc eh nothing exactly new. Not sure where coming this convintion about Nintendo and Xbox also. Outside maybe some selective titles.

Actually, I kind of miss the old console wars. :messenger_smirking:The epic battles at E3, the cringe moments, the commercials going after each other and not least the choice we had as consumers. Not easy always because most people had to make a difficult choice and couldn't buy every system. So did I. But still. The industry felt vibrant, alive, still a bit immature but always growing and evolving.

This could be good news. For example, the Playstation fanbase at large has failed Gravity Rush. So if the IP can get more sales by being on other platforms as well could be good.

Too bad Andrew House and Shu Yoshida left the company. The last great generation with those Leads. Current output so abysmal, I don't remember any other PlayStation Console of mine having such long phases of just collecting dust. Very Pathetic

I'm trying to figure how this listing means PlayStation games are coming to the Xbox and Switch especially when Helldiver's 2 is already head to the Xbox way before this listing 👀.

I get it though there are some that are wishing and praying Sony goes 3rd party lol.
Don't do this to yourself buddy, there's copium and there's this bubble full of false hopes you live in. They wouldn't put so much effort in all of this, just to port 1 or 2 Games only. It's pretty much the whole slate at this point going by the Job listings

This is the best move that Sony could ever make. Putting their games on Nintendo and Xbox will bring in more revenue and profit combined. True sony fans should want this for their favorite company.

sony is going to be more profitable than both Nintendo and Xbox combined now that they're going truly third-party.

I say let Nintendo be the only company with exclusives, that's their prerogative. Sony doesn't have to be like Nintendo. Let Sony do what they want. This is how they feel so let PlayStation what they want. Let them be the biggest most powerful third-party publisher in the industry. It's not like they won't have their own platform to cater to once in a while. I truly support this move by PlayStation.

Love it how the usual suspects run to post the SonyToo bullshit.

Also, there will be a point they will not be able to bring their games to Xbox, because there will not be one....

Sony have literally been following Xboxes footsteps in all of this. There is no sonytoo when sony are literally doing everything MS did to destroy their console business, just a year or two later.

Blame sony not forum posters.

For a consumer point of view, this is just... Good news?

Buy their games where you want and enjoy.

Exactly.

What's sad is. I saw a couple of posts yesterday where sony fans were saying they only buy and play exclusive games.

So, these people are literally going to stop doing what they enjoy because other people can play the game too?

Its crazy the conditioning these companies can do to the psychology of a "fan"

Its like stockholm syndrome or something.

What can you say about Nintendo's success on exclusives? Will it last or will Nintendo's philosophy change someday?
Eventually. In the next decade? Probably not.
Every company is "run by accountants" otherwise, they'd be bankrupt.

1- It devaules the brand
2- It gives less reasons for ppl to purchase a Playstation if you can play the same games in something you already own.
3- With less hardware sales Sony makes less money as they have to give up 30% of they own games to other stores and also lose costumers for they own store where they have been selling 3rd party games and DLC and taking a 30% cut and locking ppl into services like PS+ to play online.
4- Less money to invest in they own studios can lead to massive layoffs (See actual Microsoft) and loss of quality on they own 1st party games.

You can bookmark this post and watch it again some years later if Sony really goes full 3rd party.
Why would it "devalue the brand"? Are MGM movies devalued because they're available in AMC, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark, etc.? Of course not, it makes them more money, allowing for larger movie budgets.

Also, Sony subsidizes consoles, so there's really nothing gained by not having a physical box given they lose money on consoles.

Take Ghost of Tsushima, already sold the copies it was going to sell and the game is completed. It would cost very little to release on Series X and Switch 2 and squeeze out another 1-2 million in sales, potentially more.

Production costs are likely going up even further next gen and consumers have moved to digital rather than physical games. Ending hardware exclusivity is the only way to survive.

So let me get this straight.

They go 3rd party.
Like MS, this will kill their hardware.
So from the average lost PS player, they will lose the revenue from: hardware, accessories, subscription, 30% cut from around 10 games plus microtransactions.
But they will get from him a smaller cut for a couple of Sony games from Steam and other platforms and recuperate the rest from all those that would never buy a Playstation. Those infinite gamers minus 100+ million PS owners.

All this after announcing record profits.

Makes sense.
