Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

Yeah. I donno. They take a game that is almost never frustrating becauae you almost always feel like you're making progress (turf war) and then turn it into a mode where there's a lot more frustration (down time due to having to get to the splat zone, only really making progress when you control it). I'd rather see a ranked turf war mode, or at least see it put into the rotation.

Not even winning feels good because it's either a total blowout where the match is over in 20-30 seconds, or mostly a blowout where the other team shakes you off the point a couple of times, prolonging the round.

Can't wait for the Splat Fest and the Cats Vs Dogs battle and we all discover...

...
Judd was stuffing the ballot box the entire time.

so. good.

I donno...I'd be lying if I said Splatzones were really doing it for me. If not for the ranks, I definitely wouldn't be playing it. Something about it is just frustrating in a way the other mode isn't.

Callie and Marie were very clear about it in the introduction to Ranked Battles yesterday. (Something like: "For people who don't enjoy the competitiveness of Ranked Battles, Regular Battles are a better choice.")

Most of my matches have been like this, but I've had a few that were so tight they went in to overtime for thirty to forty seconds, which was the realest shit.

A roller is basically required for port, two against none is a bloodbath!
Eh, it's pretty easy to hold the choke on the enemy side without rollers

Sprinklers once again reigning supreme, place it on a key wall and you either get constant squidding room or make rollers use their shotgun move to destroy it aka eziest splats of my life

you probably never shot off too many ledges, since that's where it's most noticable. It's not a case of turning it off - it's simply due to the way that the camera/reticle is positioned behind a 3d model in space but projectiles are coming from the 3d model. If you're aiming down over a ledge, but the 3d model is not in the same place as the camera, the reticle is attempting to show that you can't physically fire 'through' the ledge since that is out of the LOS of the character model .

at least I think that's what's happening

Sounds plausible.

Was there supposed to be a "/s" at the end of that? Cause if not, wait to be condescending, it's not the "competitiveness" we don't like, it's the conclusion we have reached based on our observations and experiences which hold no bearing to anyone but ourselves that it isn't deigned nearly as well on turf war and isn't nearly as fun.

Having put a good chunk of time in tonight (got from level 1-7), I really like this game. It has a ton of personality and style. It's also got a really fun arcade feel that I haven't gotten from a shooter in quite some time. I haven't found a weapon that really clicks with me yet, but I'm sure I'll get there.

Right now, the only sort of complaint I have is the whole map rotation thing. On the one hand, it's a really cool way to do maps across every game. On the other, it makes things feel a bit repetitive over longer play sessions. Learning map layout is very important, of course, but I wish the rotations were a bit shorter. If they rotated maps out every 1-2 hours, I think that'd be perfect.

I think it depends on the map... I really like Skatepark, Saltspray and Underpass ranked, but Mall ranked is hell on earth

Saltspray's my least favorite in both modes. There's a really long stretch the opponents can't reach outside of an inkstrike that's boring to go through every time you respawn. It's the only stage where I ever actually fall off of it, which can be frustrating. And reaching the high parts of the map can feel clunky on it.

Eh, I just want ranked turf mode. I like competitiveness but I don't like Splat Zones.

I think the Rig is my favorite map. Just super jump to your ally's position ;p

And I love using an inkstrike at the countdown to cover their base right as the match ends. So good.
I totally agree that there should be ranked turf war. Maybe rotate game mode every two hours or something? Or a staggered four hour rotation so both modes get the rotated maps and both modes are always playable. I dunno.

Well to be fair the game straight up said "if you want to have fun stick to Turf Wars" or something along those lines when Ranked was added.

I don't believe that's the case. I've been having fun with most of my games so far, even with the 'YOU GET NOTHING' for loss

Having only played Turf War on like 3 Maps, my favorite is that really small one that's just a straight line between the two bases. It creates a really fun back and forth experience that can turn on a dime. The team fights that inevitably take place in the center area that juts out a bit are just super fun.

I feel like Splat Zone is the hyperbolic time chamber. I went back to do some ol' fashioned turf wars and it felt like I was just destroying everything in front of me and posting some wild high scores for myself.

On another note, now that I'm approaching a decent level, new shot of my Inkling:

I am spending far too much time creating wardrobes for specific colors I like my Inkling keeping. :lol

Port Mackerel on Splat Zones is really tough. The zones are so spread out

I just had my first match there and I LOVE it. It takes so much more emphasis off of the "shoot all of the things" engagement at one choke point and forces people to learn how to synergize and slip in and out defending the turf.

At the same time, Inkstrikes make it so easy to do well. :lol

my only gripe with ranked battles is that they don't let you team up with friends that are around your rank, certainly would stop the trend of losing due to shit teammates

I got paired up with DaBoss this morning and those were a fun 3 battles. That probably won't happen again though :(

It's your opinion, not a fact.

It's a figure of speech, you know what I meant. But I'll go back and edit it for you.

Edit, here you go:

I vastly prefer one hill KOTH because I usually carry (well, 2.0 or better KD, but a 15-2 isnt rare) and I'm going to go insane if I can't even stop my enemies from taking one hill then taking the other while I walk over, stopping my shutout. I can force a shutout on a 1 hill, but not a 2 hill :/ And the time delay at the end if they stop us when we have 20 or less seconds is hell.

If you didn't enjoy your time with the mode splatzones on the single-zone maps available earlier today, give the mode another try now. Both of the maps in rotation have two zones, and it makes a world of difference! Matches on the skatepark and the port are long, extremely intense, and there is now a ton of strategy and battling for key spots going on that doesn't happen as much in the single zone maps. Also, the battle isn't as concentrated here as it was with the single splatzone levels, and that gives you much more room to manuever and sneak your way to momentum changing splats.

Edit: I see I'm not alone in this sentiment :lol

I don't know why I keep playing Ranked Battles when the mode sucks. I had, yes, FOUR 3v4 battles in a row. I had another battle with one player on my team with a score of ZERO. So, thirty minutes of my time were wasted. I hate this mode. I need to stop playing it. I'd be so much happier if I just stopped... Except my first dozen matches were fun and exciting. Now, they've just been crap. ARRRRGGG.

omg this thread is getting close to OT2! Splatoon hype is huge! Please tell me the title for OT2 is gonna be Prepare to dye or Squid's Next Door

Got my Amiibo Edition since yesterday.
Turns out my Media Markt had my pre-order since Friday but someone was too stupid to check the order as "arrived". Hence I never got my confirmation email that I could pick it up at my local store.

Sucks that I missed out on 4 days of Splatoon because of this.
But at least I got the Squid amiibo, which looks REALLY fucking awesome, even better than some of the Smash amiibos.
As soon as I get my pay both Inkling amiibos will be mine too (along with some new Smash amiibos I've been dieing to pick up).

So far the game is awesome. I played the first two Global Testfires and I found them to be tremendous amounts of fun.
I played a few online battles, the first three story missions including the first boss (which was awesome, btw. I love puzzle bosses, no matter how obvious the solution is) and the game actually exceeds my expectations.

Sadly I already had two disconnections during online battles because I don't know, but aside from that everything is pretty smooth (just like the demo).

The style of this game is amazing. The developers really created a whole world inhabited by squid people and they live this fact out to the fullest. Puns everywhere. I love it. Though I wish the European English translation would be as loose and fun as the American English one.

There is absolutely NOTHING BAD I can say about this game. It's awesome through and through. It surely lives up to and surpasses any hype I ever had for it.

Hope to see you guys online!

Oh yeah, totally forgot to mention, got my Amiibo triple pack yesterday but haven't had a good chance to do the challenges beyond the first set.

I don't know if you guys have ever used an inkstrike and wiped out the entire enemy team at the same time, but it's absolutely beautiful
