Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

Loving this game so much! The single player is a blast and the online has been fairly smooth so far! I like playing without motion controls.

As Destructoïd said, the foundation is fantastic. Splatoon will keep on improving over the next weeks. I'd say it's a classic in the making.
I downloaded it last night around 10:30pm (eshop West Coast FTW) and said, "OK, lemme try a couple of maps for a half hour and play it more tomorrow after work". Lost track of time and didn't realize it was already 1am.

I get the limited maps complaint as I kinda exhausted myself from playing the multiplayer arenas toward the end of my playtime and then found the single player mode which was entertaining.

I am not disappointed and would recommend it. Its fun and not insanely complex, I'm usually awful at shooters and felt the game is pretty balanced.
You will lose hours and hours worth of sleep playing this game. :(
.
Hmm... gonna keep thinking about it lol

You can't accurately aim with the pointer in 3rd person, because the game can't have any clue where you're actually aiming in 3D. It just doesn't work properly, see Epic Mickey or Yoshi in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Metroid Blast says hi!

That's also how they are displayed on the back of the cases:

Yeah, that would have confused me as well because I forgot that those controllers needed wiimotes to work.

Splattershot Pro is pretty nice. I think the best way to use an inkstrike is to fire it just behind people, enough where they can't see the marker. Happened to me once, tried it myself and suddenly I'm actually splatting people with it.

I get what you're saying, though I don't recall having any issue with Yoshi in Galaxy 2.

I'm happy you guys like it so much. :)
I'm still waiting for Nintendo to send me the game, the review servers are pretty much dead at this point.

Been horribly sick all week and just got done work.

Wife bought all the new amiibo and splatoon.

Been incredibly excited since reveal but far to sick to play.

Can you guys cheat me up with some news on if the game is the paintball game I always wanted?

You got to be squidding me, that's inkonceivable! But in the case that does happen, it paints me in a negative light. I better roller with it and tackle that at once then. And if it doesn't work the first time, I have another ten tackles coming.

Well, you basically just promoted yourself to site admin by my squid logic.

You haven't played RE4 on Wii have you? That worked beautifully.

Guys, when you're playing on Saltsprang Rig, make sure you have someone on the large platform at all times.

All of my teammates when busy by the small platform while the opposing team had the large platform and I was KO'd.

So I wasn't a fan of what I played during the little weekend tests they did at all, is it safe to assume I shouldn't bother with the game? It really doesn't seem like my type of shooter, but I'm seeing a lot of positive impressions. Granted I tend to take those with a grain of salt due to the honeymoon period most people suffer from.

Loving the game. Everything about it. Style, visual, music, the little details, Miiverse integration, fun shooting, fun gameplay...

..yet, like Smash and Mario Kart: I can't get online! Static IP, forwarded ports, disabled firewall, etc...and nothing. Heck, last week the speed was updated from 5MB to 10MB, which of course allows for faster browsing and downloads (and uploads too -ping is better too-), yet no luck when it comes to online multi on this games.

It seems is a problem exclusive to my Wii U and 3DS, as every other system I had never had similar problems.

Oh well. Still, love everything about it.

If you've played it and didn't like it at all then why should you bother with it?

They're pretty much achievements, having you go through the same thing in a certain way and the gear is just reskinned stuff, so you're not missing much of anything. The figures are worth it by themselves, but taking an added incentive away would probably hurt their allure.

Possibly. They are selling gangbusters alone, though.

I'd trust your own opinion. You played the game, didn't really care for it. Unfortunately, thats your answer.

Everybody's buying it.

The game is the real deal.

But nah, if you didn't like what you played, it's not going to magically sway you with a little more time.

Have had some awesome matches today. Hope the community stays active for months to come. New maps and other content will definitely keep people playing.

That's too bad. Nintendo's online does seem pickier than most. I had to do a lot of configurations to get mario kart 8 to work somewhat respectably. But I seem to have better luck with splatoon in that regard.

My main problem with weapons being added after release, is that after the weapons come out, EVERYONE will be using them online. We'll probably have like 6 painbrushes in one match, it will be silly.

Yeah, how many times during the first few weeks of the new Mario Kart DLC did you see any of the older courses chosen???

Okay, i'm Level 10 now, gonna stop for the time being. I was beginning to think the Aerospray MG is OP since every time I was on the same team as another Aerospray User, the team won...

...except when I was the only user and there were 2 users on the other team and I scored 1,400...then I realised i'm OP.

Also, what's the highest rating in the "Toasty Rankings"? I have "On Fire", can it go higher?

Some thoughts so far.

Fortunately, there hasn't been any serious server downtime so far, which is surprising given how problematic the testfire was. However, there have been a couple game drops, and one part where I was stuck in queue and had to turn off my Wii U to escape it. The game runs fine most the time, but it really doesn't handle mishaps well.

As for maps, I've played on 5 of them so far. Here's my thoughts on each.

Rig: Probably the most unique map, but that doesn't mean the best. The map is huge, and unlike others doesn't funnel all the players into a singe choke point. Lots of high ground and the map probably does the best to protect players from getting spawn camped. However, due to the lack of choke point and the massive nature of the map, it's reasonably possible to spend the vast majority of the game just painting the area and not actually fighting enemies. It also doesn't help that the top area has by far the most real estate on the entire map and almost always decides the winner, but is super far away from everything else and is a pain to get to. Have mixed feelings on this map.

Underpass: The worst map I've played so far. I feel like at higher skill levels whoever wins the initial mid fight will almost always win the game since retaking back mid is extremely difficult to do because there are few entrances into it which are all in close proximity to each other and there are so many areas for defenders to hide. A lot of the map seems to be designed to annoy the player like how if you want to go up the middle you have to go up a ramp rather then being able to climb the wall or that one of the sides has areas that you can't ink so you have to jump over them. Just not a very good map imo.

Roller park: The middle choke is actually extremely spacious on this map, so there are plenty of areas to sneak behind enemy lines or flank them. Only played a couple games on this map but it seems pretty good.

Mall: Another really choke-pointy map but the middle isn't as dominating as Underpass since the middle hill is actually sloped in a way that makes it hard to hit people coming up it and there are a couple high ground areas around it that attackers can use to try to clear out defenders. Again didn't play it much but it seemed fine.

Warehouse: Another choke map but again the choke is pretty large, giving lots of room to flank or sneak. Really like the crates in the middle as you can use them creatively to get the upper hand on your opponents. Does a good job at forcing fights but still leaves a lot of ways for the team that's behind to get back into the game. One of the better maps.

So far I would say of the maps I've played on (Think I've only missed one):

5. Underpass
4.Mall
3. Rig
2. Warehouse
1.Roller park

Playing the Single Player campaign now and I think what made me fall in love with it, even though it's just a really small thing, was me discovering the location of the second level's Sunken Scroll.

For a moment I thought I killed myself in the level but it turns out that what I really did was discover the way to find it through complete accident. It's stuff like this that makes me love Nintendo's designers - they really think through the set pieces in every exact moment.
