Yeah I have both movies too, Gainax actually ran out of money while this was running?

Im going to go lay down.

Yup, they ran out of money while airing. People like to think this was all planned beforehand to which I say, "SUCK IT, EoE BITCHES!"

*Ahem* But definitely watch EoE, then if you want to see moar Evangelion (and be confused in the process) watch the Rebuild movies (3/4 out so far)!

Guess what - I have a different opinion from you!

Not liking something is fine - it's more than fine - but the fact that you like to remind everyone relentlessly of this (and of your right to do so) makes you seem terminally negative. It seems like a near-Pavlovian impulse - SOMEONE LIKES SOMETHING I DON'T, I MUST REMIND EVERYONE THAT I DISLIKE IT!!!!!

Anyway, in my view, the terminology is essentially meaningless - they're just names, shortcuts for describing things that seem perfectly obvious and intelligible (or intentionally mysterious). I don't understand what's so offensive about it as a result. What do you propose instead? What's so difficult about taking the names as shorthand for "launch sequence stage" or "mysterious organisation"? That's all a name is, after all.

Not really hearing how Captain Earth is well executed from you perspective. Anyway, this matters to me because the terminology problem was one of the big things that soured me on Captain Earth quickly. I was so inundated with this dense lexicon that clearly actually means something but is so ludicrous as to be deliberately obtuse. It took me out of the experience because it felt so unnatural and the naming conventions so bizarre it forced me to not take this show seriously.

Hey firehawk, is there some topic or PM chain or IRC group or whatever for this poster thing? It'd be nice to be able to keep track of what's going on more easily, if possible.

I just scanned through one of the Rebuilds, its not even the same show?

Yes and no.

The first one is, almost shot for shot. Some redesigns and stuff.
The second one follows the same footings but changes a bunch of scenarios.
The third one goes completely off the fucking rails and is shitty. Too bad they didn't make the two movies that we missed that came between 2.22 and 3.33 so it could've made some sense

And yes, you must watch End of Evangelion. And keep in mind that the last two episodes of NGE take place during EOE.

Maturity, bitches.
Today I completed what can only be described as one of the greatest anime shows of all time. So much so I'm motivated to write a review.

Which I'll start on tomorrow.

If people like a show they will post alot about how they like it. If people dislike a show they will post alot about how they dislike it, what's the problem here, its AnimeGAF.

Love Live! School Idol Project (Season 1) - 01

I'm probably looking too much into this but the main irk in this particular scene is the horrid use of CGI in 3-4 shots of them dancing, in addition it kept switching from 2D animation to 3D models making the entire scene appear ugly and mediocre overall.

All the dancing in the show is like that.

I dunno, at some point it's probably okay to just admit that it's a pet peeve problem, since that's what it sounds like.

The unnatural nature of the dropping of terms and the themed naming conventions are something Enokido always does. It's his personal writing style and that'll never change. I think that outside of adaptations, he has never ever written anything which isn't overloaded with metaphors and heavy handed thematic overtones. Utena, Melody of Oblivion, Diebuster, Star Driver, Redline. Anything he has a major hand in big and bold with the metaphors and references, often at the expense of more subtle or logical storytelling.

I'm not excusing the flaws or anything, but it's important to recognize where elements of a creative work comes from, and why. For what it's worth, Enokido himself says that his works are not meant to be taken seriously. He wants to write "stupid stuff" because it's fun, and the "stupider" it is the more excited he gets. So there you have it.

...I feel like dropping this show now...

That is a fair point, I just don't think it was handled very well, then again there are many elements I don't think Captain Earth has handled well, which is why I object to it being called well executed.

Well that explains Melody of Oblivion.

It's not that the anime adaptation of Endless Eight was bad IMO, but the original LN only had the one timeline. There is also the fact that six short stories and two complete novels could have been adapted instead of seven extra episodes.
I don't want to type out my defense of Endless Eight as a television event, because that debate is basically the Endless Eight of AnimeGAF, but I put Endless Eight as one of my personal "best moments of television", perhaps next to things like the "real time" episode of MASH or the first interracial "kiss" on Star trek.

Needless to say, Endless Eight as a single episode would have been an interesting gimmick episode - much like say, the Star Trek: TNG episode "Cause and Effect". As an eight episode event, it is an interesting piece of television history.

To give a rundown, which might tick off some people, the reason those two last episodes came off as... well as they are is because at the time the studio ran out of money.

After getting all the profits and moneys they made a redo of the ending episodes into a movie called End of Evangelion which is still pretty fucked up in itself but gives a better polished ending.
I think EoE and Rebuild are proof that some directors work better when they are constrained.

I'm going to be posting an update/request for suggestions in the PosterGAF thread tomorrow or Monday and PM everyone who has said they are interested a link to the post. I spent an hour yesterday trolling through pixiv for Aria art. lol

Yeah I wouldn't say Captain Earth is particularly well executed either, but I do enjoy the infectious tone of positivity the main characters have. It's something I feel is pretty lacking in the other shows I'm watching this season, outside of Haikyu, so that keeps interesting for me. But hey, like with everything else in this thread, I guess "ymmv" holds true.

Well that explains Melody of Oblivion.

Mooooooooo!

Quite, though there is a difference between liking a show and awarding it a technical merit that seems unearned. I have explained some of my position, I wish Mr. Wacky could offer up how this thing is well executed because, yea, not seeing it.

Yeah, I usually just skip the dances. I didn't look forward to them at all unlike Idolmaster lol. Nice avatar by the way!

Ty! Though I don't think Makoto is best girl anymore I'm still tied between Chihaya and Yukiho.

Love Live! School Idol Project - 02

Moar plot!

Honoka definitely loves her school too much... glad to see Umi had the same thought process as I did when she didn't take becoming an idol seriously at first. Going back to Honoka.... I don't like how her character looks, I really don't. May have something to do with the hair, dunno.

So I just realized that CGI I complained about in the previous episode is present also in the OP, surprised I didn't catch that the first time but now that I did I am even more disappoint, its the OP for crying out loud. Luckily there was no CGI whatsoever in this episode so, HOPE STILL REMAINS! That is, if I can last through the OP with each episode; the music is good but the dance makes me disappoint.

Captain Earth 09

Man, from now on I'm just gonna assume everyone introduced in an episode who gets more then two seconds of screentime is a Designer's Child. I'll just be counting the seconds until they get a magic kissu. Bonus points if they have unnatural hair colors.
I've got my eye on you, Akari.
Who is fucking insane.
Things seem to be picking up now, and by picking up I mean going to Monster of the Week.

Heya Corvy. What are you gonna watch next?

I'm not really planning anything new at the moment because I've gotten really behind. I have Getter G, Getter Go, and then finally Shin Getter. Grendizer, Mazinkaiser and SKL. The rest of Zeta, ZZ, CCA and Unicorn. Macross 7, Dynamite and Frontier to finish. In addition I still have VOTOMs, Clannad and After Story, as well as Yamato to finish.

When all of that is done I intend to take a brief break to rewatch some favorites.

The crow feels the flow of the hatred very well.

It was so baaaaaad. I can think of very few shows that I would point to as genuinely trying too hard to be cool, but Melody of Oblivion is that show. It wanted to be cool so bad but it couldn't. It fumbled like, every last step a good Shonen needs to be good.

Captain Earth 9

So theyre just going around the country waking up other aliens? I dont get this whole designer children crap. Probably dropping this. Misty and hot brown girl are cool but not enough.

Vividred Operation - 10

Finally! Actual story progression! Oh sure, it comes at the very end of this episode, but still! I'm just glad I'm getting somewhere!

Oh, and some cutesy SDBurton-esque stuff happened in this episode too. Yeah, that kind of stuff.

They should just pivot and change this into a slice of life rom com. Or into the Adventures of Pitz & Misty. Forget this alien libido kissing EXPANDOOO stuff.

I agree.
But keep the alien libido kissing expanding

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

Alright well the recent references to this in NGNL and Soma got me interested. Time to start this.

Make sure you start on the first season and not Stardust Crusaders

Love Live! School Idol Project - 03

Honoka finally reminds me of someone, and that's Yui from K-On! I didn't have much of an opinion on Yui from that show but I know she definitely wasn't best girl from it either. Since Honoka is the MC in the show and I have to deal with her unappealing personality, I guess that's the reason why I dislike her.

Onto the actual episode, daaaaaaamn. Did not expect that with everyone
not showing up
. And then we get into the actual concert: the song was enjoyable but the dancing of course was a mixture between 2D animation and 3D CGI models. I dunno, I think I'm getting used to the CGI models but it is really disappointing with all things considered. If the show can keep up with the enjoyable songs to counterbalance the use of CGI I think I'll be alright.

Still dislike their school uniforms though, and I'm waiting for pink-haired girl and black-haired girl to get into the idol group because obv them and Umi are best girls in the show so far.

I agree so much on 3.33. It was just a confusing mess that I feel trashed the world building that the first two Rebuilds had. They just suddenly drop us into the action with no explanation as to what's happened between the movies. Hell, they barely even imply what happened. All they really give us was "NERV did a thing... and it was bad". Since we never find out exactly what happened, it also ends up ruining some of the characters; what could have happened to make
Misato turn her back on NERV to join WILLE?
We just don't know, because the movie doesn't care to tell us. Also, as much as I find her amusing,
who the hell is Mari and where did she come from?
Here's hoping 4.44 will be better.

As for End of Evangelion, I love it! I always saw the final two episodes of NGE as an alternative to EoE though, not occurring at the same time. I'm curious, what makes you think that?

The Rebuild movies are made as an entire remake of the Evangelion series. So yeah, not the same as the original series.

Is this where I start posting the charts and conspiracy theories?

The only thing that irks me is that they didn't really take a ton of time to carefully define each term (through info dumps or something). In those other works i'd argue the concepts are conveyed a lot better. I still don't know what's going on half the time I watch the show because I have no idea how to interpret the gravity of what they''re even saying, just that something is bad or good.

Kill la Kill - 04

Surprisingly liked this more than the last episode, despite it being just a funny breather episode. The animation is noticeably getting more limited, but the way it's used in this episode is both great and hilarious.

Also, I watched this episode on Netflix as opposed to Hulu where I watched the first three, and while I think the translations are better it's kinda distracting that the subtitles are in the middle of the screen.

Dammit, I'm shit at remembering episode numbers.
