Black Lagoon Omake (7 very brief OVAS)

This is a few silly alternate universe/non-canon shorts that are just goofy times with the familiar faces you've gotten to know from the series.

They live more normal (okay, not so normal) lives, with Revy as a magical girl in one episode and everyone
genderbending
in another.

They are made on the cheap of course, with a frame count you can count on your hands, not uncommon with shorts.

They got a few chuckles out of me, nothing too funny, but for the short time to finish them all (most are 2 minutes, the longest being 5); it's a rather inoffensive activity to see the cast like this.

Are you and Brazil going to do a proper review when you finish R2? Not that I'm not enjoying your episode by episode impressions. It's only going to get more amazing from here on!

and you guys are amazing. all 25 episodes in one day. I couldn't possibly do that...

Yeah, I'll probably have more to say once R2 is done.

But honestly on Code Geass R1...there's not much more to say than what I did! Ha, the flip switch-breakneck pacing makes it quite easy to just list it all the components with simple notes on the characters running the madness.

But I'd bet on doing the final episode of R2 review and then overall series review (more detailed, less silly) right under it, like I did for Black Lagoon and Steins;Gate, with non-quoted
obnoxious
wide screen cap of course.

also RICKS BREAD has the best ED of the season
I can't help but smile every time I watch it. I don't know anything about the source material but the next episodes better feature Rick and the girls solving the world's problems with his bread.

Code Geass R1 25 -END-

The school setting thing wasn't as overused and silly as I thought it could've been after reading some of the comments, and I'm glad for that.
There's no way they can go back to school now, so I guess we're done with that.

Oh ye of little faith

Such a good show! People really should be checking this out!

I found myself clapping with some of the plays these girls made. I mean look at this.

Yuki jumped and snatched that ball! I say damn!

CxHZo.png

Shizuka couldn't have cared less about baseball at the start of the series, now look at her. So good.

MJMYo.png

Kyouko dug deep to make that catch! So damn good!

I haven't been this hyped from a sports anime since Ookiku Furikabutte. Loved the characters and their strength for dealing with all the crap that was sent their way due to playing a 'boys' game.
While they didn't win, they sure made a damn good impression that girls can do things just as good as the boys!
Well done!

Mayo Chiki! worked for me when it realised it was nothing but fetish-fuel and did not try to put the silly melodrama in the forefront. The harem wackiness is something I can appreciate in moderation, as long as they don't try to sell it as meaningful character development. Ultimately, I stand by my assertion from a few months ago: this is Love Hina for a generation that has become even more shameless about its otaku fap-fodder. Nothing I would ever recommend unless you are just as incorrigible. Two (oYo) out of five

Pretty much agree with your assessment. I'd never recommend it to anyone else but I had fun with it when it wasn't trying to be serious to fail miserably to tug my heart strings. Needed more "Meeeeeeeeeeeeh". :p

I'm sure the cajunator faction of animeGAF will enjoy Patema Inverted as well.

Don't mind if I do.

Daw. This is the last available photo of that NTR English text book:

Seems like this really was made for nerds!

Aww. Lucy's a cutie, but she's leaving soon so the NTR will be short! XD

Apparently they didn't used to be that way, my friend sent me this comparison pic (left is 1993-1996, right is 2011~)

Additionally, there's AR if you use an iPhone, and the AR has really bad voice acting! :O

Im just going to leave this here

As accurate a description as any. XD

Funny little OVA. The concept of a dojikko becoming an eroge VA is pretty fun. Will check out the manga.[/QUOTE]

He really is the perfect comic relief for this kind of show. ^^;

Who actually watches anime stageplays? Are they even profitable?

The one part of the industry I can give a vaguely professional answer on!

I expect the audience for anime theatre, based on the main audience for (musical) theatre in Japan, are young adult women who see the shows multiple times (particularly if they have rotating casts). The shounen musicals (TeniMyu, Rock Musical Bleach etc.) are aimed at fangirls; SeraMyu, Utena etc. were performed with all-female casts in the Takarazuka style which has traditionally always skewed to a female audience, etc.

I'm mildly surprised to see Working being made into a stage play (Phoenix Wright surprised me less given the Phoenix/Miles fandom). I'm guessing that the audience is larger than I would have thought - does Working have much crossover appeal? I generally dislike all shounen/seinen comedy so I never watched it.

Fun anime theatre fact of the thread - Oh! Edo Rocket was originally a stageplay!

Would be interesting to see Ryūichi Sakamoto collaborating on the next Mr. Takahata movie, as per Mr. Suzuki invitation (http://www.nausicaa.net/wiki/Latest_News#News_from_Japan). Anyway, better they go fast with those kind of details because the next two movies must be finished on time:

Junichi Nishioka - News from Japan said:
In this state, Ghibli's staff members concentrate on production. There is still more then one year until the release date though. I think that we can show you these films next year in some way. If cannot complete it next year, Ghibli must be dissolved. (laughs) Ghibli must do it by all means next year, because we do not release a film this year.

They have been upfront and repetitive about it lately, but that all-or-nothing sensation the words of Studio Ghibli's people give on interviews in regards to Mr. Miyazaki & Mr. Takahata films is very unsettling and amazing at the same time, as if they are staking it all.

Random question: If it's meant for a female audience, wouldn't an all male cast make more sense? Like the upcoming Geass musical for example.

First promotional video for Tari Tari:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOgdQaYzqqo
The story centers around five Japanese high school students who are too young to be called adults, but who no longer think of themselves as children. Wakana Sakai (Ayahi Takagaki) once took music lessons, but she withdrew from music after losing her mother. Konatsu Miyamoto (Asami Seto) is a positive-thinking girl who loves singing and spends time after school at the vocal music club. Sawa Okita (Saori Hayami) is a spirited archery club member who dreams of becoming a horse rider. Daichi Tanaka (Nobunaga Shimazaki) is a chronically late badminton team member who lives with his college student sister. "Wiin" (Natsuki Hanae) just transfered into Wakana's class after 12 years abroad in Australia. Music brings Wakana, Konatsu, Sawa and the others together into an ensemble during their last summer in high school.

I hope this isn't referring to anyone but Usami.
But I love twin-tailed tsunderes. :(
Huh, I almost forgot that there's a Working!! stage play going on this month. Anyway here's the full cast for what it's worth:

Since everyone wears the Wagnaria uniform I guess all you need are a few props and some wigs, huh.
I thought it looked like the cover of a porno.

The ojousama was the best.
Does P.A. Works only have one character designer or something?

Eri Kitamura nailed her role, that's for sure!

As did Subaru's voice actress, who also voices Index!

That you think the series is going to be concerned with? It isn't like they're being very subtle about it!

Well, obviously. I didn't really mean to phrase it like I was going out on a limb or anything. The show is not exactly being subtle about where things are going so far. I do think that it's probably being so direct and overt with all of this for a reason, though. Maybe I'm putting too much faith in the show, but I think there's probably going to be a payoff for it being so forward with this stuff.

This is Bones, you're putting too much faith into the show.

This does have the same animation character designer as Cannan, True Tears, and Hanasaku Iroha, although the original character designers of those shows were all different. Another had a different animation character designer.

Another's animation director/character designer was a main animator on Hanasaku too.

Random question: If it's meant for a female audience, wouldn't an all male cast make more sense? Like the upcoming Geass musical for example.

To be honest, the Geass show surprised me. I know other anime adaptations have previously cut the female characters out completely (this is what they do for the Prince of Tennis shows, for instance) but I can't think of anything that's cast men as female characters before.

I think there's a couple of reasons why all-female casts are popular, particularly with shows based on anime:

i) For something like Sailor Moon or Utena, where the target audience is pre-teen to early-teen girls, they don't care about boys in the same way.

ii) The Takarazuka (who do many of these adaptations - they did the Phoenix Wright show in 2009, and have previously done Black Jack and Rose of Versailles) are all about heightened fantasy and emotion - like shoujo manga, really. Reality is discarded entirely and the lush sets and over-the-top performances heighten the overall experience. The actresses are trained specifically for "male" and "female" roles and there's a big female fandom surrounding them as people and performers. I think all of this contributes to something which is much more popular with women than with men - and it just so happens that they are the ones doing stage adaptations of melodramatic anime/manga/games!

So I guess it's partly about what the audience is looking for and partly where the talent actually lies (and who's willing to stage these shows).

Of course there are anime adaptations with mixed gender casts - Bleach and Ao no Exorcist, for instance. But many of them go with all-female casts purely because they're done by the Takarazuka!

(this is OT, but the Takarazuka are owned by TOHO, who also have their own "normal" theatre production arm that stages shows with mixed gender casts. The companies have been known to stage the same shows as each other in radically different versions because the Takarazuka's audience are looking for a "hyper-real" experience - they cut plays and musicals to remove all political storylines etc. because they have no place in the "world" of the Takarazuka.)

That's very detailed and informative. I feel I need to absorb this knowledge and store it into a part of my brain for future reference. Thanks! :D

Might have been due to the art, but I think the Ao no Exorcist one looks better than this. Or at least the humans look more like their characters.

Just for fun, cross-posting from the usual Media Create thread the top anime-related games sales for the last week:

[PSP] Steins;Gate: Hiyoku Renri no Darling - 24,849
[PS3] The Idolmaster: Gravure For You! Vol.7 - 17,314
[PSP] Even in a Game, Listen to Me Girls. I Am Your Father! - 13,241

And so you have something to compare with the PapaKiki PSP sales, Haganai PSP sold 56,969 in its first week back in February, and Oreimo PSP sold 88,493 back in early 2011. There's also still the Oreimo sequel later this month, and Bakemonogatari PSP in August.

edit: And also Steins;Gate for PS3 (both the regular game and Hiyoku Renri) later this month as well.

If you like embarrassment-moe, it's god-tier.
I'd call it the ultimate embarassment-moe manga, but I haven't read enough to really make that claim. I'm sure it's up there though.

In the postscript for the first volume, the author, Konno Azure, writes

...Some of you already know, but I had been primarily an adult-manga artist.
Then one day, I received an offer to write for a non-adult magazine, but...
(´・ω・`)。oO(*Sigh* There really aren't any non-adult stories I want to write...)
...was basically how I felt about it. I wasn't into the idea at all.
(`・ω・´)< "What I want to draw is girls turning beet-red with embarassment!"
That's the kind of man I am.

Then one day, I was listening to a song called Gamer's Actress by a music group I like called MOSAIC.WAV.
(It's a song about an eroge voice actress.)
(*゚Д゚*)!!
What about a manga where a highschool girl is made to work as an eroge VA?
Then I could draw faces flushed with embarassment as much as I wanted to, even in a non-adult magazine!!

I wondered if I might perhaps be a genius.

Yep, I already started reading the manga and got to that little omake page. Good stuff.
