Extended thoughts on Wasurenagumo

http://i.minus.com/il8up49PSKjnp.gif[IMG]
Thank you for that gif. I had to rewatch that entire sequence of her running inside the house right after I finished it for the first time. Great stuff.
In retrospect, Wasurenagumo makes some very apparent commentary on otaku fandom. Of course the themes can be applied much wider to that, I just like to apply it there since this is anime we're talking about.
The historic book experts represent otaku, while Mizuki represents a normal person. Notice how the book experts share an understanding on the strange events that occur, and are not surprised by things a normal person finds unusual like monsters sealed in books. Mizuki's initial reaction to the spider girl is disgust and horror, while Suzuri is instantly entranced. And notice how the historians share an understanding on the strange events that occur, and are not surprised by things a normal person finds unusual like monsters sealed in books. Of course, the reason for this is made clear by the final scene, where we see that the old historian also has a "monster waifu" of some kind. In this light, Suzuri not caring about Mizuki's death is not surprising at all. After all, hardcore otaku don't care about normal women as long as they have their waifus. They are perfectly willing to discard and replace a willful and "bossy" real girl with one made in their image, but fully dependent on them. Suzuri, of course, believes he is following his own pure desires, while in reality he's being manipulated by a large and tangled web of forces beyond his vision.
Surely when people look up the definition of deconstruction in the future an image of Wasurenagumo will be there.
And that's a very interesting perspective on things. You're absolutely right, haha.

I don't know about 'in retrospect', I thought that was what the story was about from the moment he called her adorable!

Still, you saved me the trouble of having to write that all out and explain it so thank you for explaining it in such a clear manner.
Wasurenagumo

Wow, no kidding. Many aspects of this were well-done, but I don't think the story gelled as a whole.
The cute, humorous aspects may have been intended to make the ultimate conclusion of this dark modern fairy tale that much more chilling, but the two tones didn't fit together.
I think the whole thing actually comes together perfectly, for the reasons stated above.

Correction. The site's font is fucking terrible It's a "ni" not a "12." The clue says there is a mecha design credit within the main staff credits. Basically, it's saying that there will be mecha in the show.

That makes more sense.

I think the whole thing actually comes together perfectly, for the reasons stated above.

Yeah, I changed my opinion upon reflection. There's a lot of tone shifts, but they're handled in a very deliberate manner.

No problem, I didn't want to leave my impressions as a just a homersimpson gif, the work deserves better than that.

The reason I say in retrospect, is because while it's true that it is weird for him to instantly call a spider-girl "adorable," it's also the kind of thing that's played straight in anime so often, oblivious to all normalcy. I mean in this season of anime alone we have guys getting magical girlfriends that are zombies, ghosts, and eldritch abominations. What makes Wasurenagumo so effective, in fact, is how it plays off of these anime conventions and what we've come to expect from them.

Many things can be done right if they are done right, but tonal shifts are some of the trickiest to manage.

I never said it wasn't. Just arguing against the notion it's impossible back when we were on the subject of Sankarea. It's been done well several times in stuff like Gintama, Yu Yu Hakusho, Higurashi, and now this. Though I also think it's a very ymmv thing, possibly more than most story telling conventions. You can make a case for and against a lot of them.

Nonoriri

If your name is Nonoriri you have to go buy Nanami's tampons.
Mysterious Girlfriend X is super dull but I feel tingly whenever I watch it.

I think I might be a perv.

Hyouka 04:

The stunning production values continue as the Mystery Machine makes its way to Chitanda's place to work together bits of the mystery. For those following the story I won't spoil anything but I doubt this episode will win over those who didn't care for the first three. However I wanted to highlight in this episode just how gorgeous the background paintings are.

[Eureka Seven Astral Ocean] - V

Perhaps because everyone said this episode was terrible I was expecting this weeks outing to be something truly repugnant, when in reality it was just kind of average. I can see why many of you might be offended by all the 'quirky girls' in Generation Bleu, many of whom simply appear to have been inserted into the show to cater to some otaku niche and I don't think much of them either, but then again I haven't really liked any character besides in the show besides Ao so this isn’t a big problem for me.

This episode actually does a fairly decent job of introducing us to Generation Bleu and portraying how they operate. I certainly enjoyed the amount of thought that went into in the hanger section; it actually feels like a place that you could plausibly service vehicles in, which makes the whole location feel more believable. Of course, this down-to-earth realism clashes pretty badly with silly girls that Ao encounters throughout the facility. For obvious reasons, it’s hard to like a show when you don’t like the characters and most the characters in Generation Bleu seem pretty annoying, besides the adults. Perhaps this is deliberate, I don’t know.

Now it’s time to engage in a spot of healthy reductionism:

eao5a.png

Hey look, Ao gets to ride in the Geko Zanbani White Base.

eao5b.png

I remember this scene from Rahxephon.

eao5c.png

Meanwhile at NERV….

eao5d.png

Never trust an organisation run by Gendo.

eao5e.png

Even if they also have a Haruka Misato.

eao5g.png

Hey look, plug-suits!

eao5f.png

Generation Bleu have access to the latest WiiU near-field technology.

I would make fun of this episode some more, but it seems happy enough to make fun of itself. This is a weird show.

Umetsu just blogged a few hours ago that he is working on additional designs for the new anime which he is directing and doing character designs for. He is trying to create uniquely cute designs. I think this pretty much confirms that he's working on the Aniplex/DengekiG's project.

This season:

Fate/Zero 2 > Kids on the Slope > Eureka Seven AO > Space Bros > MGX > Lupin > Kuroko no Basket > Tsuritama > Hyouka > Accel World > Saint Seiya Omega > Sankarea > Zetman > Medaka Box

I think that's all. The only show I dropped so far is Jormungand, that shit really sucked.

It's always interesting to see an anime directed by someone who's worked mainly as an animator previously. They certainly good job with this production.

Loving

Tsuritama - Love the atmosphere and emotional drive of this series, and unlike some other people despite finding fishing boring irl, I actually love it when it's ultilized in fiction like this.

Kids on the Slope - The only show (unlike lupin and eureka seven ao) that has retained it's wow effect past episode 1.

Fate/zero S2 - Great follow-up to the first season. With the exception of one episode, there hasn't been one I didn't enjoy.

AKB0048 - I have no idea what tier this belongs to, but let's say it's INCREDIBLY entertaining, despite how bad and ugly it is wwwwwww.

Liking/Loving/Watchable

Eureka seven AO - I love it when it's good, like it when it's in-between the bad and good aspects of the series, think it's somewhat watchable when the terrible dialogue and omigawa kicks in. The only thing I consistently love about the series is the music.

Fujikolupin - Love it when the episodes are like 1 & 2 (haven't seen 6 yet) think it's watchable when the episodes are 3 & 4, and enjoy it when the episodes are like 5. The main problem with the series, is the lead isn't good enough to really carry the weaker episodes, and it comes off as boring as a result.

Liking

Hyouka - The concept is super-dull but I find the way Kyoani executes it's material to be compelling; maybe I'm just a sucker for sakuga.

Space brothers - I liked the first episode, but I find the premise to be somewhat chessy and to reminiscent of a hollywood sports movie, here's hope I enjoy the rest of it when i get caught up on it.

Mysterious girlfriend x - When I catch up it will probably move up to "loving" tier, because the first episode was fucking awesome.

Rest of the eps is pretty boring though. Urabe's character... ain't much of a character? It's like a personification of something... idk.

Smile Precure director Takashi Otsuka is having trouble with his show's fans:

WEll, He should know by now that not just children are watching his show. He's gonna get normal animu fans along with it and the consequences of that are dire.

Eureka Seven Ep. 20

O_O This episode shouldn't have worked as well as it did, but it somehow managed to pull it off fairly well. Not to say it was an excellent episode though, because the writing and directing was still rather flawed.
I forgot how brutal this episode was, definitely channeling Evangelion.
Lopsided...
What are you doing in this thread? Finally got over your fear? ;)

too many shows to list. haven't dropped anything yet.

Stuff I'm not watching.

Tsuritama- liked how 1st eps looked, but felt no 'hook' to keep watching.

Sengoku - Errrr.... I'm not familiar with japanese history.

Saint Seiya- I already have smile precure to watch this season ;)

Rick's Bread - I like reading the write ups here instead.

That show with the gun dealers- Don't like the art.

Stuff on hold:

- E7 AO. Seems too... 'by the books'? Will marathon it after I return from overseas.

This is amazing. (FSN spoilers? Eh)
I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the existence of zombies/vampires in an universe that has skeletal warriors.

And once again Shirou is put in perspective.

are you watching this and not the original?
Its like watching Terminator 3 before 2
I've watched Aliens but never Alien. T2 but never the original Terminator. And now I'm watching E7:AO without ever checking out E7.

A shame. True, it does look good and it's got good music to go with it. If that wasn't good enough bait, I don't know what is.

Upotte, Dusk Maiden, Tsuritama and Apollon are the only shows I watch weekly and Apollon only because of the Noitama programming block. I will marathon the one or other show but I have nether the time nor the energy for more animes.

Kuroko's Basketball 3

The game wasn't that exciting. There is something wrong with the way the game is flowing and the parts they are focusing on. I was hoping for something more organic instead of just a display of Kise, Kagami and Kuroko skills. Also, I was actually hoping they will focus on more than the two main players, give them some personality or special skills. I'm guessing one of the players will be their designated 3 pointer shooter.
