Shiki was weird, structurally. Rather than having buildup-resolution over an episode or a short arc, it just plain had 12 eps of creepy followed by 12 eps of shit going down.

I liked it a lot (obviously).

I think it does actually work in the case of Shiki, because the contrast between the two different tones of the series really helps to convey the dramatic changes in the story.

That is true. Well, the 'retcon' part was a half-joking exaggeration on my part... maybe I see it more as a jab to the character archetype, like the similar one they dealt with the Farewell, Beloved Lupin episode.
