Nice pick up from viz, hope it does well to get a dub and blu ray release. Kuroyukihime and Haru are an awesome team, love their interactions already. He's actually a really cool main both in pig form, in whatever form shown at the end, and off the grid form. Hes like a combination of all the good points of Shion and Shu. Shes also awesome too, surprisingly. Taku too, hope hes also in the world. The graphics were compelling as was the world and plot.

Did they really weeb out rather than naming her Snow Black?

Praise Aniplex and their saving of the anime industry. Truly, we live in the golden age.

Well, the releases are good quality at least.

In the case of Fate Zero, REALLY good quality.

the Madoka sets are nice too.
I mean, if they really include a bunch of extras with the release then I'm fine with higher prices. If anything I think its more of a ripoff buying Sentai filmworks discs that are so barebones its painful to look at.

Dearest NeoGAF,

I have completed my viewing of the first episode in the Medaka Box series. I hope to get used to this anime style as quickly as possible and enjoy all it has to offer . But... I'm surrounded by characters that quite frankly, irritate the living shit out of me, and I'm kind of freaking out. The designs are not to my taste, the monologues are boring and this blue haired delinquent appears to be able to fly. At least the boobs are bouncy.

You might have better luck with Sengoku Collection. Why don't you give that a shot?

If you're part of a delinquent group, Medaka is going to reform you through the sheer power of her immutable unquestionable holy righteousness and perfection. You've been warned.

Extras are cool, but not at those prices. For anime releases, affordability is key. It's nice to get some premium releases, but there needs to be a more affordable option as well.

I'm honestly amazed at it.

Also the postcards and shit really aren't THAT great to begin with. This is honestly perplexing. Like, I don't fucking understand it. I'm glad to have the set but I mean FUCK.
I am too, really. I mean, people are gonna ask what they want. The Anime Corner Store guy was listing the set for $189 days after it went out of print, and I basically laughed at his price. I offered (against my better judgment) the seller on eBay $175 for a set recently, which sold for $600 a couple hours later. Awful.

Well, I agree with that. but isnt there an affordable release of Madoka?
$40 for the barebones, four episode Blu-Rays, $30 for the DVDs. This is a lot compared to other stuff, but I dunno, my friend paid like a grand for Kimagure Orange Road laser discs when AnimEigo originally released them here, and I watched him pay $40 for two episode subtitled tapes of stuff. I dunno, I'm buying the Madoka sets as they come out, but it's a bit easier to swallow $75 every six weeks than $370 at once.

Well, I agree with that. but isnt there an affordable release of Madoka?

Well, it's on the high side compared to the typical prices of anime releases, but it isn't Fate/Zero levels of ridiculousness. At this point, 13 episode sets have become the norm, and even the 'affordable' Madoka release feels like a relic of ten years ago.

I have to wonder how much it really costs to manufacture something like the Fate/Zero boxset.

Streaming is the affordable option now.

Even the base DVD version of Madoka, with the fewest extras, is still $90 for 12 episodes.

That's basically the old North American model ($30 per 4 ep single dvd). I fail to see any real issues here.

There's no reason to subject yourself to this kind of thing for our sake.

Besides, we already have an approved list for people who are into that kind of thing.

I really think people have become spoiled by the cheapness of anime sets these days. no wonder the companies are going bankrupt. Anime is a lot of fun but its a hobby,, and its going to cost you a lot of money to enjoy it fully. That's just a fact of life.

And 90$ is DIRT FUCKING CHEAP for anime.

I mean seriously, thats how much it used to cost in the 2000's when Suncoast was selling it like crack candy.

Yeah, and when was the last time you saw a Suncoast?

Streaming is the affordable option now.

True, but I would like the ability to have affordable DVD releases. Streaming does make this less of an issue.

That's basically the old North American model ($30 per 4 ep single dvd). I fail to see any real issues here.

And it's the old model for a reason. In the day and age of 13 episode sets for cheap prices, asking $30 for 4 episodes just doesn't fly. The market has changed, and while $30 for a sub only VHS of 2 episodes might have been in fashion at one point, these days you can get a lot more anime for that money.

Okay, yeah, when you take it in the long-term context of all US anime sales history, it's about average, but I thought we were restricting things to the modern day.

Anyway, I don't know quite yet what the upper limit I'll be willing to pay for Bakemongatari BD release will be. Depends on the extras, maybe.

It would be interesting to see. I think it's cool we're getting the Japanese releases, but the Japanese prices are a bit less cool. I mean I understand them worrying about reimportation, but the market here is so much different.

I was at a con last weekend, and we went to two panels where people were complaining about what a rip off that was. I remember being pretty damn psyched when stuff was coming out 4 episodes per disc. Sure, that's not the market now, but it was a huge improvement then.

2 episodes on a VHS tape for $30. Subbed OR dubbed!
$10 premium for subbed, if you were so lucky that they released it/you could get it in your area.

The market as it is, is barely sustainable.
Anime is a very very difficult thing to market and profit on.
Even Japan can't seem to make it work without serious issues arising.

Back in my day, our anime was only released on zoetropes and wax cylinders and cost $6000 per ten-second reel. You kids have no idea how easy you've got it in comparison!

The thing is, the cheap 13 episode sets may become the new "old model". Companies went too cheap, and those prices couldn't sustain the industry. It might have been great as a consumer for a while, but what good does that do when all the licensors fail and close.

I'm not saying that everything should be a Fate/Zero-style pseudo-import, but $25 for a full series is probably too cheap, in most cases.

If I ran a company, I'd release stuff in relatively barebones season sets for around the price of the Madoka singles, and then do limited/numbered deluxe boxes for $100 on Blu-Ray. Could hit all the markets then. I have no problem with high prices, but I just want to be able to enter the market for some of this stuff.

I'd do manga digitally & offer limited printruns if enough people ordered stuff to be hardbound. I've wanted the Kimagure Orange Road manga for years, and I'm super juiced it's getting released, but I badly wish there were books, too.

I'm just now kicking myself for not buying up Urusei Yatsura last year. :(

The Knight in the Area - 14

I paid attention to only 1 Hnng heart moment this time either there was actually one of those moments in the whole episode or I'm subconciously starting to phase it out, they sure were inventive with some Seven fanservice, and it's only a matter of time before someone starts shouting "SPECIAL BEAM CANON"!!

And LOL at the preview for the next episode, if it's what I think it is, it may just straight up break some rules of football. :lol

Now time to mow the lawn.

Natsuiro Kiseki

premise is boring. Looks like a low budget Iroha. Dropped

Sengoku Collection
visually looks awful. Dropped after 10 min.

I seen a lot of cat girls but cat guys?
So, dat ending? Now, I wanna see episode 2. I actually wonder where this show will actually go now. Can't be normal romance wooing a zombie or something like that. But aside that, the show looked good, I only cringed a bit when I heard her ear shattering NO!!!!!!!, and it doesn't seem as silly as the synopsis.

I agree, we don't necessarily need Aniplex levels of pricing, but Geneon's slightly higher pricing models made sense for the quality of product they released, and it would have been sustainable had they not blown ridiculous money on shitty licenses. I do think there should be a barebones release model with a price tier slightly below that of the Madoka sets. I don't think the Madoka sets are unreasonably priced though. I think thats just about right.

Don't assume I would just blow $400 on every boxset that comes around, bnecause even I wouldn't buy in a market like that. But the occasional special set I don't mind shelling out for, especially a show like Fate Zero.

What do you think about NISA's current model? About $50 for 13 episodes on DVD/BD combo (a bit less if DVD or BD only), usually with a decent artbook bonus.

I like NISA's model a lot. It's not unreasonably expensive, and the quality of the product is better than what you get with a barebones Sentai or Funimation release. I plan to buy more NISA releases myself.

I like this model a lot actually.
Especially for the lovely artbooks.
They have some quality issues, but are pretty quick to point them out and replace the product.

I should probably buy some of their's. I will for sure buy AnoHana, but I need to get Arakawa & House of Five Leaves at some point here.

Yozakura Quartet and Hellsing Ultimate have cat guys for example.

Great episode, although the MC's cat eared hair helmet is irritating, mostly because he's the only one with that type of inventive hair design compared to everyone else and looks out of place.

Rukako has shared her love!

Okabe...you're such a guy!

May Queen + nyan^2 .
Ha, a neat touch relating to past events in the story.

The gang prepping Okabe for a date was fun,
made me reminisce of the first half of the series. Which I don't mind, now that I know the show can get heavy and faster -paced when it wants to, I trust it to execute that knowledge at the correct time.

Interesting, so she remembers the last world line as well. For a second, I though Feyris was special. Dude, don't let the date end like that...he let it end like that.
That's no way to have closure.

Quite an interesting turn on the show's premise by utilizing
gender
and its effects on feelings involved between persons due to societal conditioning. Liked the episode and am ready for a full explanation for some of these happenings!

One Piece 5

This episode was incredibly stupid on all fronts.

Remember folks, it's ok to kidnap people who haven't done anything and turn them over to murderous pirates, but blowing up an abandoned house? That's evil.

Luffy is an imbecile, and Nami is even worse. Why can't Luffy just use his rubber ability to get out of the cage? why not just... uh.... not let Nami tie him up at all? I won't even got started on everything else wrong about this episode. At least Zoro is still a bro.

From all the stuff here, I was expecting something... and got something else o_O.

persona4 Yukiko was... weird. MC is kinda fucked up. Stuff looked more impressive in screenies than in motion imo.

Hard to get a read after 1 eps... Reminds me of that budget movie Zombie Strippers (on netflix streaming!) for some reason.

RTTP: Kobato 1-2

Slow... but cute cute cute cute.

Finally getting around to watching these before Season 2. Amusing to say the least, provides some good background info and I like the animation that goes behind the lectures.

People who complain about pricing will sing a different tune if they ever try to run their own business when the grow up. The price the customer wants to pay and the price the business owner has to charge to survive are two different things.

Correct, and they hardly ever overlap. The margin that anime companies operate on must be SCARY. I mean like having to skip meals to make it by levels of scary.
