She's actually seen them both, along with some other mainstream stuff that doesn't necessarily count as shounen. I'm thinking of using Tiger and Bunny to get her back into season-format anime because, well, it's a proven hit with the ladies. Maybe I'll secretly make a MAL for her so you guys can provide more recommendations. She has incredibly specific taste.

lol, put up a list of stuff she watched, and which she enjoyed.

Inu x Boku SS 4 - This show is okay. I'm not sure if I'll keep watching though, I don't know how much I like the main pairing and that pairing is what the show heavily focuses on. I mean, the guy's basically a creepy stalker... why should she love him? Just because he's around and overly devoted to her? That shouldn't be enough... apart from that though, solid episode.

Naruto SD: Rock Lee 1 - This is a superdeformed comedy series starring Rock Lee of the Naruto series, with his sidekicks Neji and Tenten as the other major characters. So far, it's average. The first episode gets off to a rocky start, with the first half of the episode focused on a really not very funny joke involving the oh so funny things that happen when Rock Lee tries to avoid stepping in dog doo. Yeah, aiming right for the 12 year old boy audience there... the second half's better, though, with an actually amusing joke. Naruto and Rock Lee are competing over who gets to be the one to succeed at a mission... it's amusing, but the funniest part is one specific skit.
The part where Rock Lee acts out a little play where he's the mother mourning his wife Gai's death, with Neji as their daughter and Tenten as the baby, was so ridiculous it was quite funny stuff... :lol
. I also like that it's a Naruto thing where Tenten actually does something, and talks... she was one of the most underused of the children in the first half of Naruto, unfortunately (and of course, Shippuden focuses on all of the non-main characters even less), so it's good she gets to actually do something here.
vlcsnap-2012-04-06-02wiovp.jpg
The funniest thing in this episode, though, actually did happen in the first half. As seen in the image above, it was when Tenten, playing the straight man, reacts when the girl Rock Lee is trying to help says how the debt collectors who are after her have cut off her water, gas, and electricity. Tenten says "wait, we have gas and electricity?", only for the others to not get her point. I found it pretty funny, though, because of course series like Naruto do indeed do an incredibly bad job of actually fitting themselves into a setting that makes any sense at all. I mean, are they in the modern world, some fantasy land, or the past? I have no clue, and neither does the writer, obviously. Like, there aren't any cars, but there certainly is modern clothing and modern-ish buildings... it really doesn't make any sense. And of course, Naruto is far from alone in that; that's an extremely common problem with fantasy anime and manga. However, characters rarely actually comment on it, so yeah, it was funny stuff to see her say that. :)

Also, probably because Achiga-hen is starting soon, I started rewatching Saki. I'm through episode 4 so far... I'd remembered how good the show was (very good), but I'd forgotten that the OP and ED were that great!

Do eet.

Studios are only as good as the people in them.

Well, in DEEN's case this time, they borrowed a guy from SHAFT right? So as much as anyone wants DEEN to rise from obscurity, they'll going to be mediocre again after Sankarea.

There's too few people in this thread that appreciate the true dark horse of this season, Saki Achiga-hen.

One Piece Marineford Arc

FINALLY finished. The pace was glacier at places and more than once did I poke at my player thinking the video froze when it was really just a pan of a still image of battle >.>"

Still... all the new folks were all interesting and will probably pop up again in the next 500 eps/chapters. And I was surprised how I didn't mind how some attacks took AN ENTIRE EPISODE (maybe I should go watch dbz again someday ;P).

I TOLD YOU!

Finally got around to watching it for real. Yeesh, it is a pretty bog standard first episode. This wouldn't be such a big deal imo if I didn't know that it was batshit insane Gainax handling things. Where is my batshit insane and good art though Gainax? :(

Sankarea

I was not expecting this. Holy shit, this is a sleeper treat so far. I was expecting something more standard, but this is just really nice. It's almost refreshing even. All the critique I can give it has been done to death and more eloquently than I could ever attempt being half asleep right now but seriously, I can only hope this isn't a situation where the wad is blown on the first episode alone. I do want to make special mention of the awesome use of scenery and lighting to set tones though.

Oddly enough, this also makes me wonder how Tasogare Otome is going to turn out.

"Batshit insane" Gainax has left the building. I don't know how many times this has to said before people start noticing.

Silver Link is animating it...

Then again, "Deen is animating it" is what we all said about Sankarea. Still, it seems unlikely lightning would strike twice.

I think there was actually a note in the opening of one of the recent chapters along the lines of "don't mess this up, Silver Link." Author is aware of their reputation apparently.

It's kind of interesting, rewatching it, because when I first watched the anime I hadn't read the manga yet, but now I've read the whole manga (a couple of times), and read the spinoff mangas too (to date)... the thing I most noticed from the manga was that it's quite similar to the anime but the anime added more detail than the manga has. A lot of stuff is expanded on in the anime versus the manga. Of course, the anime doesn't cover the last few years of the manga of course, but hopefully someday they make a second season of the main series, once there's enough material... I'm definitely looking forward to Achiga-hen, but yes, what I most want from that anime is expanded content, sort of like with the Saki anime, but even more so. The Achiga manga just skims over way too much stuff that would have been interesting to see.

But yeah, I'm very much looking forward to Achiga. As for the orignal anime though, the art's good (characters, sure, but backgrounds too; the backgrounds in the manga often look great, and they're good here too), the story's good, and the mahjong action's fantastic.

... I still find it kind of funny that Saki complains about the length of the maid skirt in ep. 4, though. Her school uniform skirt's no longer! I mean, being embarrassed about wearing a maid costume in public, sure, but that specific reason has never made a lot of sense. That's pretty much the same in the manga though. On another note, the setting sun scene where Saki and Nodoka promised to go to nationals together looked pretty nice visually, beautiful orange sky... and yeah, when Nodoka blushes that much every time she sees Saki, it is hard to not think of the yuri subtext.

lol, put up a list of stuff she watched, and which she enjoyed.

Pretty much anything that ever aired on adult swim she liked, plus a few series like Mononoke, Beck, Monster, Darker than Black, Gundam SEED, and Soul Eater.

She generally prefers action, sci-fi, and psychological but there are a few exceptions, and generally detests fanservice in any form even when it's not central to the show (which makes it a miracle that I got her to like some Gainax stuff). Out of series from the past couple of years I've been thinking of suggesting Tiger and Bunny, Steins;Gate, Sengoku Basara, and Fate/Zero, and I'm going to try to get her to watch Apollon and E7AO week to week (yeah, yeah, I know; but she's just a casual fan and will probably love AO.)

She may never fully share my taste but I do want to introduce her to things that I think will get her interested in anime again.

Has she seen Now and Then, Here and There?

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? of the Dead 01

I need to decide on an abbreviated name.

I really enjoyed the first season of this show, and I'm looking forward to the new season. The OP hints at many more awesome fight scenes. The real reason to stick with it is for the humour though, I hope it delivers.

SPARKLY EGGS, RAINBOW VOMIT, and TENTACLE MONSTERS. You piece of shit.

I missed this show. :3

I remember when I watched anime with my mother. she kept asking why character had giant raindrops, bled so much, and had giant mouths. I honestly had no real answers.
She loved Haibane Renmei and Spirited away and Ponyo though.

I'm not a mega-fan but it was definitely fun.
Looking forward to Achiga

Is it DEEN regulars though? Let's look at more of the staff!

As I already said, the director has worked on a number of SHAFT shows. But what about the other staff members?

Has she seen Now and Then, Here and There?

She might have watched it when it aired late at night on Syfy, though she would probably quit anime for the rest of her life after two or three episodes. I'm not really sure what she's watched on her own.

I hope you link her to my thread when you guys get caught up with Fairy Tail.

I'll isolate it somehow (NeoGAF would scar her for life) and I'll be sure to let her have a look.

Well fuck. :lol

I guess this is the crash course I deserve for not being too informed on the different studios and what goes on behind their doors. I just see Gainax and think FLCL, TTGL or Panty Stocking. Guess I need to readjust my expectations somewhat. :p

To be fair, the only time I've tried watching it was when it was on the SciFi channel at midnight when they used to show one anime film a week. On a school night and everything. So maybe it would be better if I tried watching it while awake.

There's no time like the present.

DEEN. DEEN has changed.

That's why I'm not confident about Silver Link, though. Because it seems unlikely they've similarly strengthened their staff. The director for Dusk Maiden of Amnesia doesn't have a very promising resume unless he also has an alias.

Hmm, if the Saki adaptation does add detail, I'm pleasantly surprised by GONZO's competence. I appreciate it when the studio goes the extra step to make the anime something more unique and a separate entity from the manga, instead of just an animated carbon copy. If only they hadn't gone bankrupt...Hopefully this Studio Gokumi will do Achiga-hen justice as well.

I guess Saki's characterisation is to not stand out so it kind of makes sense. It's like how she tries to maintain a zero score in Mahjong, not winning or losing in order not to attract attention. Wearing a maid skirt is pretty noticeable.

I don't think anyone who watched this show doesn't think of the yuri undertones. It's not like it's very subtle.

I consumed many tacos in that show's honor while it was airing.
I'm not a mega-fan but it was definitely fun.
Looking forward to Achiga

Yay, another Saki bro.

Hope there's another food they can cross-promote.

Man, I'm way behind on stuff I wanna check out. Feels pretty good, actually.

Polar Bear Cafe 1

There's just something unnatural about the way these realistically styled animals behave and interact with what seems like a predominant human population. The pacing is super slow and the humor is way more miss than hit but it has an unexplicably pleasant mood and I guess I can sorta see how someone can find something to like here even if I don't think this is for me.

I am both shocked and appalled that a concept like this could fail. I guess I'll be sticking with Chi's Sweet Home for my animal anime.

Show her Midori!

I do want to prank her with something ultra-violent at some point. I'm seriously considering having her watch Blood-C because she keeps asking for a "good vampire anime".

I want to give your sister an erupting burning high five.

A few years ago she had the SUPER ASIA + Master Asia's floating head image as her computer wallpaper for a while. No lie.

Make her watch the entire Blood franchise from airing order. She can watch the demise of a once great franchise with limitless potential.

;_; I'm so so bitter. But seriously, the original Blood:TLV movie was superb. You could let her watch Blood-C for trolling though.
