It would have helped if I had an attachment to the franchise. I'm debating on whether to go ahead and watch the original movie right now.

I'm utterly biased to the original movie so I say go do it.

Somehow I thought that Heroic Spirits weren't actually the spirits of dead heroes that had been revived but were just magic given form and sentience for the duration of the Holy Grail War and that the manifested heroes were just representations of their legends as they'd been passed down through time. That's not really consistent with anything that we've seen in the show (like, if "legends" are really what matter then why is Saber female if
Arthur
is male in his legend), but if I didn't actually pick any of this up from the show, I suppose it's just my personal theory, then.

The game Fate/Extra for PSP has a really freakish explanation for all of this:
Heroic Spirits are manifested by a magical computer on the Moon that has recorded all of human history from the dawn of civilization to the present and can manifest historical figures and literary figures with equal accuracy.

I couldn't play F/Extra due to the BS battle system. Is that explanation even canon?

So, can you summon Santa Claus?

Calling Nasu right now.

Seems more of a mythological figure to me, especially when then one in question is clearly based on the Arthurian legend. If, er, Arthur was a women so that you could sleep with her.

They are all mythological figures then, because there's little historical evidence for any of the supernatural abilities of these characters.

I couldn't play F/Extra due to the BS battle system. Is that explanation even canon?
It's canon for F/Extra, which is an alternate universe and setting.

You guys are too cool and calm.

Am I the only one to have an irrational breakdown? :(

I'm sure I'd react similarly to a franchise I care about but I was glad to see that last episode. It embraced the parts I enjoyed about the previous eps and turned it up a notch.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Angel's Egg (First 10 minutes)

This is not a movie to watch when you're already tired.
Ahahahaha.
More like she'd impale me and occasionally twist it. :(
Now we're getting somewhere...
Nazo no Kanojo X 1

wtf did I just watch!!!? Not sure what's worse, the sick perversion of consuming saliva or the ending of School Days...
good gawd mangz...
Man, on the tier of "nasty bodily fluids to come in contact with", saliva is pretty down there.

You swap spit everytime you kiss someone.

That was an exception, an example of the grail malfunctioning and Caster breaking the rules. And even he wasn't a fictional character, but some nameless phantom/samurai.

What does
Caster
have to do with it?

Hot.

Thankfully Fate/Zero is a classy show and doesn't resort to such base reasons for altering famous mythological heroes.

Finally someone who understands me!
I warmed up to it as it got better, but vast stretches of the show are still pretty poor.
The show would fare a lot better if it were two-cours long. Not to mention all the money they would save by shortening it.

I don't know much about Fate outside of Zero and a little Stay/Night, but I've seen art for some new Fate production (Fate/Apocalypse?), and if you have a problem with fictional characters in Zero, you'll never make it through this if it's ever adapted for television. For instance, I'm pretty sure that
Frankenstein's monster is a Servant and this. And it's a loli.
It also seemed to have some badass off-the-wall usage of unlikely historical figures such as
William Shakespeare being Caster
, so I miiiiight have to expand my Nasuverse knowledge once I've seen all of Zero.

Yeah its a pretty tame fetish as far as anime is concerned. My first thought when he got sick was that he got mono.

Fate/Apocrypha was some canceled MMO project, it's relation to FSN and F/Z is questionable.

So, what I'm learning is that it's best not to question anything about any Fate property because the answer will probably be stupider than you can imagine.

Also, I don't think the show is implying that historical people had super powers.

Fate/Zero 14:

Finally got around to watching this, and SHIT JUST GOT SO INCREDIBLY REAL ON MULTIPLE FRONTS FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Gilgamesh on a flying throne of infinite swag with Tokiomi groveling at his feet?

Berserker TURNING A FUCKING FIGHTER JET INTO HIS NOBLE PHANTASM AND GOING STRAIGHT FOR GIL'S JUGULAR WITH IT?

Ryuunosuke exposes his identity like a moron and pays the price?

I don't think I breathed or blinked through the whole episode. I really haven't felt this kind of exhilaration watching anime in a long time. F/Z proving again that it's a titan of great action, dialogue, and plot.

Tokiomi's weakness is pretty apparent now. Between being a sniveling bitch in Gilgamesh's presence and Kirei lurking in the shadows during Tokiomi's confrontation with Kariya, it's pretty much a given that he's going to be killed and Gilgamesh will become Kirei's new Servant. Gilgamesh has a level of respect for Kirei that he quite obviously doesn't have for Tokiomi, so I expect them to work frighteningly well as a team. The Servant bodycount has to start going up sooner or later.

I suppose it's also technically possible that Caster could receive a new Master, but if his squid monster dies, he probably dies with it as it's his current and only source of acquiring Mana. With only half of the show left, I'm fine with him exiting at this point even though he's an incredibly fun character. Have we seen Caster's Noble Phantasm or is this it?

I think it's very likely that Lancer, Caster, and Tokiomi are all going to be eliminated fairly soon. Now that we know Tokiomi's motivation he doesn't have much purpose left except to provide an opportunity for Kirei's heel turn. Lancer has to die soon because Saber needs to kill him to get her full powers back and kill Caster. So, we should be down to Saber, Rider, Gilgamesh, and Berserker fairly soon.

Fate/Extra is an alternate universe and is not canon.

Ah thanks. Really tried to play it but I couldn't tolerate the battle system. F/Extra spoilers:
Francis Drake was pretty hot though.

I'm sure I'd react similarly to a franchise I care about but I was glad to see that last episode. It embraced the parts I enjoyed about the previous eps and turned it up a notch.

Well, in my review, I did say that if the last few episodes didn't happen (aka Saya remaining a vapid singing girl) I would be much more incensed. I just don't think that trolling the audience is the best way to show the franchise respect and comes off as a cheap gimmick to attract audiences.

Fate/Apocrypha was some canceled MMO project, it's relation to FSN and F/Z is questionable.

I wish Fate/Apocrypha existed.

Loli Frankenstein and Caster Shakespeare would have been so good.

Well the what defines a hero or villain really is the public's belief of said person. FSN
That's why Archer exists in that people believed he was a hero, even though he believed himself to be an anti-hero.
It seems less dependent on facts and more about the mythology. Then again there are the gender swaps so it seems that popularity knocks you into the viable Servant pool and from there the more factual stuff such as personality and sex take over.

Archer exists because he made a deal with the world to become a counter-guardian. It had nothing to do with belief.

That sounds like a good final four.
The most fun, anyway.
Although
Caster
would definitely keep things interesting.

Yeah I was talking earlier about how that specific picture right there is a hell of a lot cuter than the 2006 version.
Yeah, if I wasn't told that that was Nanami, I don;'t know if I'd recognize her. Sure, the hair style and color, and the uniform, are the same, but she looks like a completely different person...

As for allison and Lillia, I ended up buying that series based on the artwork and curiousity. I watched about half of the first set and kind of put it on hold, but I enjoyed that. I'll revisit it once I get caught up on some other things.
Allison (the first half) is definitely worth watching, but yeah, I didn't like Lillia much at all and didn't finish that half either. Lillia's nowhere NEAR the character Allison is, it's quite disappointing in comparison... and the second half's story isn't as good either.

Who knows though, you could like the Lillia part too.

It can't be worse than Koihime Musou.

This post doesn't make much sense, because, S2 (Shin Koihime Musou) aside, Koihime Musou is great fun! S1 and S3 were both pretty good.

Maken-ki 2-12

What a weak series and what a weak end. Censored T&A and almost no fights, making for a boring show all in all.

Yeah... you were warned about how terrible it was, but continued watching anyway? Why? Masochism?

Just read the manga. I think the anime ruined the only good arc.
The manga has a good arc? Since when?

I found A-Channel pretty cheap on DVD and thinking about buying it and was wondering if there was anything wrong with the set. Haven't found any reviews on it.

A-Channel's subpar, boring, and rarely funny. Probably don't bother.

There's no incest in Upotte.
While that certainly is a positive point in its favor, the creepy teacher-student relationship element that dominates the first episode (though not the series at a whole, in the manga at least) does make it borderline lock-friendly... but it seems to be surviving so far.

... Why does something like that get a 6 page thread so quickly, though, while if someone made a thread for Sak Achiga-hen, I have trouble imagining it getting far at all before dying... :(

That's a pretty good lineup indeed, sure. Hack/sign, Azumanga, Twelve Kingdoms, and Abenobashi are great. Of course it's not free of bad series either, naturally... I mean, Ai Yori Aoshi was pretty poor. I've also seen Gatekeepers 21 and Jing: King of Bandits; both are thoroughly average.

From what I uderstand, Ben-to started sucking, so they all left.

Don't worry, though, as wolves will return to the thread this summer.
Ben-to had ten decent to good episodes before it got bad, though... that's more than some shows get, anyway!

The issue is not so much the fact that it happens as is the separation from the normally desirable act and fetishization of the exchange on its own terms. It's pretty gross.

The representation in FSN is a merger of things and exists at his current form because of the distortions in recorded history. The Sasaki Kojiro Saber fights doesn't exist.

That's true, and yet... the thought of liking someone's drool/saliva off their finger is one of the few things I truly find off-putting.

It certainly works for things like Koihime Musou where every character is a genderswapped Romance of the Three Kingdoms character.

Reminds me of the time I marathoned Sengoku Basara and Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls.

Sanada Yukimura turned from Hot-blooded young shounen -> short flat chested Kugiloli

sad thing is I liked both

So apparently on the FSN wiki, Archer isn't even a heroic spirit at all and is instead a Counter Guardian. This however counts as a heroic spirit in regards to the total count? This doesn't make sense.

The Light of El Cantare
I'm not going to lie. I bought Koihime Muso.

I'd buy it just because I'm a RotTK nerd, but I can't bear to see the extreme masculinity of characters like Guan Yu and Xiahou Dun besmirched :(

But you seem, that's too limiting!

Doesn't keep Koei from finding new characters to throw in each new installment of Dynasty Warriors!

Also Fate/Extra's stuff only applies to Fate/Extra even if it shares some of the traits from the mainline series.

I didn't mean to imply that Extra is canon, just that among all of the Fate properties that I've seen it has the clearest explanation of how Heroic Spirits work!

I suppose you could say they are a sub-category of Heroic Spirits that are turned into mindless killers to prevent crises that threaten humankind. Hence Archer's existential crisis in UBW. I'm not sure what you mean by total count.

The total count of Servants. So apparently Archer could be considered a Servant but not a Heroic Spirit. The wiki made it clear that he's not a Heroic Spirit and as such he doesn't get the buffs the other servants do. This then is weird as it seems the Grail didn't draw the correct number of Servants.
