To be clear, although in the pre-digital days animation was filmed with real cameras on animation stands, virtually all animation these days is done with virtual cameras in composition software.

The difference actually widens the gap between a talented director of photography and a weak one who only understands how to operate the software without having a high level of creative input.

While there are many shows which are still traditionally produced (background layer, animation cel layers, standard zoom and pans, etc), the increasing amount of 3D backgrounds and CG animation work being integrated into anime is what challenges the role here.

Where Fate/Zero excels most is in how sharp the camera feels at all times. It doesn't behave like a traditional animated production, but rather more like a live action production in many cases. There is a lot of focus on the lighting in scenes, there is focus, depth of field, and dynamic pans and tracking scenes whenever needed.

With a virtual camera as the composite tool, the role of a director of photography in anime is now closer than ever to that of the same role in film - ie: a true cinematographer.

My picks for the titles that I find personally tragic.

Unscientific internet poll etc etc. but it still looks about right, even if this is recency bias out the wazoo.

I'm guessing the cutoff was 3,000 sales and Nichijou's average is a tick above that I think.

Yeah you're right. As a person in the comments said, it was more the fact that it didn't make up for the ridonk-a-donk budget.

Soredemo is on my list, however, so it's good to see people liked it.

It does make you wonder what entertainment is like outside Earth. Inter-stellar media is a subject that needs more love in fiction.

Whenever I see this addressed, it almost always ends up being cases of aliens liking Earth entertainment. The aliens from Omicron Persei 8 in Futurama picking up the Single Female Lawyer broadcast 1000 years late and the sports-loving aliens from Getsumen to Heiki Miina come to mind.

All this Nyaruko talk is making me anxious.

raito-kun had some interesting comments about Fate/Zero ep14 on twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/raito_kun/

It's true that Fate/Zero isn't really a "sakuga" anime, because what is truly impressive is not the sole talent of an animator working on a sequence, but being able to keep the show interesting and exciting definitely owes some credit at least to the storyboarding and animation process.

Could someone clear up sakuga and satsuei for me? Thanks in advance.

wtf, no Nichijou?

Arakawa Under The Bridge x Bridge, Soredemo, and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 deserved to sell better.

C, Vampire Rosario, Nabari no Ou, Okami-san, and Tokyo Magnitude 8 are all bad shows and deserve bad sales.

You heartless monster. If it wasn't for you avatar, I'd be pouting at you :(

Sakuga literally means animation. But in fan terms it refers to outstanding examples of animation showcasing the individual talents of specific animators in such sequences. Satsuei is just photography. He's making an analogy about how Fate/Zero is not an impressive series because of the animation, but because of the photography. Sakuga anime is what people refer to as shows with a lot of kickass animators regularly on the show and having frequent animation showcases in episodes.

TM8 had shitloads of problems. It wanted to be a realistic anime but then threw supernatural shit at you along with a bunch of bullshit coincidences.

Come on, man. Sometimes you're just walking along and
debris from Tokyo Tower smacks you in the face and you die
. It happens.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island in the midst of black seas of infinity and it was not meant that we should voyage far. Some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality that we shall either go mad from the relevation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. Theosophists have guessed at the awesome grandeur of the cosmic cycle wherein our world and human race form transient incidents.

One Piece x Toriko Collaborate 2 pt 1

(^luffy's face...) Well this half was pretty epic considering the use of the One Piece music and Toriko music during the scenes. And Guts Guts as the OP. The art was really the worst part and it was like so consistent that even I noticed it. Oh well, Toriko ought to be in the One Piece universe more often, he fits in well.

Ah ok. I can understand the satsuei point.

But isn't Fate/Zero still a good example of sakuga? It has more animation and doesn't reuse as much frames than many other shows out there.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the term? I mean, would you call something Star Driver a good example of sakuga, even with its incessant reuse of animation?

fuuuu, the truth hurts.

I know of the problems and it's pretty unbelievable at times. But I still think it did a good job of inducing sadness in the audience, despite its obvious flaws and constant breaking of the viewer's suspension of disbelief.

facepalm

That's a new low for anime.

I'd still say Naruto takes the crown for worst animation.

To me, Fate/Zero never reaches the animation highs of true sakuga shows, but it also never reaches the lows of typical anime with bad art/bad animation at times. It's very consistent overall. It's not going to be one of my favorite shows visually but it never embarrasses itself.

So, there was some confusion about that Ro-Kyu-Bu alarm clock a while back. But what if you wanted an alarm clock that was a bit more... manly?

well not really...yet
One song from Eureka Seven that I absolutely fell in love with is Niji by Denki Groove.
Especially This Version.
Such an amazing song. Absolutely fucking amazing. I can't wait to finally get to the part of the show featuring this song, just to hear what circumstance it is used in.
Aw, thats a shame that you already know that song will be used.

Probably one of the best uses of an existing song ever in a TV anime.

That's true, consistent would be the best way to describe Fate/Zero. I don't think I've seen an instance where there's bad art/animation or any normal mistakes you would see in a TV airing.

What would be good examples of true sakuga shows?

Have you seen QUALITY van.

uhm, I might have. Pics?
