Asumi Kana's voice fit Nyaruko so well. We just need a nishishishi~ and I'll be in the hospital.

Also, I liked the music direction. Nothing like Latin chanting in the "dramatic" moments. and it's apparently by Monaca, whose members also did Nier's OST. Fancy that.

They also did Working!! music too.

whaaaaaaaaaaaaat

that is so awesome.

speaking of the music in the show, that OP is disgustingly catchy too.

yeah, i was surprised too. They've done more anime sound/music design in anime than games, apparently, which is interesting since their resume on ANN and MAL are pretty short.

edit: a lot on their anime resume are repeated, which explains their short pages on ANN/MAL

I liked the OP and the ED too.

Yeah, and apparently they were involved in some sound design stuff in Hourou Musuko, Fractale, Disappearance and Bakemonogatari. These probably are minor positions involved in one or two songs so that's why it isn't listed on their ANN/MAL pages.

The difference actually widens the gap between a talented director of photography and a weak one who only understands how to operate the software without having a high level of creative input.

While there are many shows which are still traditionally produced (background layer, animation cel layers, standard zoom and pans, etc), the increasing amount of 3D backgrounds and CG animation work being integrated into anime is what challenges the role here.

Where Fate/Zero excels most is in how sharp the camera feels at all times. It doesn't behave like a traditional animated production, but rather more like a live action production in many cases. There is a lot of focus on the lighting in scenes, there is focus, depth of field, and dynamic pans and tracking scenes whenever needed.

With a virtual camera as the composite tool, the role of a director of photography in anime is now closer than ever to that of the same role in film - ie: a true cinematographer.

thats very intresting, but it isnt put into pratice a lot.

Chizuru and this aspect of the story always gets to me.
If Mary is going to keep being like this, then he should just stop going after her and try to beat her to Shun-chan. So glad Shun has like no interest in her. If he gets nothing in the end I will be as torn as I was with Yuu Yanase in Sekaiichi.
. Bringing back up the stickers and their convenience store bread stuff was nice.

Or when the lead time gets burnt up, which is another common cause (I'm looking at you Eureka Seven!). I would say in terms of long running shows with the most consistent animation AND having a consistent level of regular sakuga sequences, FMA and FMA:B probably win hands down.
It's a shame both shows were animated in SD*. :(

*540p is hardly HD, damn it!

Well it's definitely very easy to tell when someone isn't good at compositing 3D and 2D layers into one cohesive whole.

I still prefer works with a more traditional art style, but there's definitely a place for the kinds of effects that are only reasonably possible with digital composition.

You know what I hate most? The abuse of motion blur filters. It's probably one of my top5 pet peeves about digital animation. Fucking terrible.

I am fairly certain at this point that I'll wind up liking this show quite a bit. The scenes with the Aunt weren't even particularly well done, but the charm of this show is really just overwhelming throughout the episode. It strikes a good balance between taking itself seriously and having a sense of humor. The other astronaut characters introduced in the cafeteria near the end of the episode did a great deal to ebb my fears that Mutta would be carrying the show on his back.

It's usually pretty bad. It looks like Kids on the Slope is going to use it to some degree, although it looked a lot better in its usage, because it was limited to specific parts of the screen. The main problem is when it's just smeared all over the image.

One thing I think studios are getting better at is how they use digital lighting. Fate/Zero and Another show much better use of lighting and shadow on digital backgrounds than previous works by the same studio.

That Bones sub-hd res thing seems to be coming up a lot since I pointed 7th to it in his disbelief with proof. I feel somewhat responsible for this.

Cthulhu chuuuuu~~~~

Truly, there are terrible primal arcana of earth which had better be left unknown and unevoked; dread secrets which have nothing to do with man, and which man may learn only in exchange for peace and sanity; cryptic truths which make the knower evermore an alien among his kind, and cause him to walk alone on earth.

Kids on the Slope actually looks really interesting because the characters themselves have this three-dimensional look. There's a very interesting style of shading and animation being employed which should be interesting to analyse when the show actually starts airing.

What I hate most is when motion blur is applied to a scene and just totally ruins the actual totally normal and sometimes awesome looking animation with the unneeded filter.

Out of all of the reasons to avoid watching Nyaruko, I'm surprised that the one that matters the most to me is my own personal lack of knowledge of Lovecraft lore. I shouldn't care, but I do.

I know very little about Lovecraft and I think it's better that I don't.

Well... my gun knowledge is also piss poor.

It's nice to learn stuff through your entertainment right? ;P

Now I need some Database moe.

Kids on the Slope is using a kind of soft-shaded look where the border between the lighter and darker tones is a gradient rather than a hard line like traditional two-tone shading. It's obviously something you can only do with digital painting so it will be interesting to see how it holds up. Fate/Zero utilizes a similar effect but more as a complement to the primary, traditional shading.

And yeah, the Rebuild movies were a big offender with using unnecessary motion blur.

I'm watching Rinne no Langrange and for some reason it reminds me a lot of Noein in the art department. I have no clue why.

It's only a matter of time until Hosoda makes a MLP movie and turns us all into bronies. :(

From what I've seen that shouldn't be an issue at all.

I know nothing about it either and I don't really care to learn. Didn't stop me from enjoying Nyaruko or Saya no Uta.

After the first episode of Upotte I know more about skeleton stocks than I ever thought I would, so something's working!

If I did I don't think I could watch someone make a travesty of his work.

When you put it that way, I can see your point about it being better to watch Nyaruko if you don't know anything about Lovecraft. What's a few missed references compared to the knowledge that any further work from the Cthulhu mythos that you consume is guaranteed to be better than what you just watched?

Mysterious Girlfriend X 1 - I haven't read this manga, and based on this anime's description I did not have high hopes to say the least.

However, I gave it a try, in part because of the good reviews it'd gotten here, and... yeah, it was actually good. Weird, but good. It was entertaining, the MC and girl were weird but likeable... (seriously, he tasted her drool? That makes him weird.) it was good. The plot doesn't make much sense of course, but that's the whole idea. This episode was strange, but good.

Oh, the art's pretty simple; it works, but it's not exactly the most detailed stuff. It's good enough I guess. Overall, this could be decently good for a ridiculous, fanservicey anime. At least it has a somewhat unique concept, it's not just entirely by the book generic. And yeah, it was entertaining in part because of that.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia 1 - After all of the poor reviews I was somewhat worried for this, because I like the manga, but it did end up being good. The art is indeed not as good as the manga's, sadly; the manga backgrounds are particularly high quality, but here they're not above average. It's too bad, and does hurt the series some.

Apart from that, though, the episode was good. This episode introduces us to the four main characters; most of them don't have much introduction yet, apart from Yuuko the ghost of course, but as I've read the manga I had no problem. I would think that someone who hasn't would be okay too, though; it says enough to get the basics, like that Yuuko is a ghost, the guy can see ghosts, and that the other girl can't see ghosts, and the other characters (the other living girl, most notably) will be introduced more later.

So, this episode starts in the clubroom, then goes to investigate an incident with a mysterious dumbwaiter, and then finishes with a search on a nearby hillside for a gravestone supposedly of Yuuko's. It's all solid stuff, and amusing. The series hasn't really gotten to much of the serious side of the plot yet, but it is a series that mixes serious and comic elements, so that's okay; it'll get to the serious side eventually, for sure.

Oh, and the beginning, where first you see it as the "can't see ghosts" girl would see it, and then with Yuuko in view, was pretty funny. Her antics as she tried, and failed, to get her to be noticed was amusing stuff. :)

So yeah, overall, Tasogare was good. It's not great, and could have been better for sure, but it was okay to good, at least.

This is not an unknown horror from the depths of the ancient history mankind was never meant to discover.
Needs more tentacles
That's Nyarly, right? He's a shapeshifter and often walks among mankind. I'd go so far as to say that him taking on the visage of an adorable young girl almost makes sense.

Milfthulhu on the other hand...
