in a world without subtlety

gargantua's easily one of the worst characters i've ever seen.

I like the fact that your descent into confusion and insanity is so pronounced that you can no longer label your screenshots. I only know where that's from because I, too, have walked the path you walk today.

Stay strong.

You're nearly at the halfway point.

We are all here to enable you.
It's nice to know I'm not alone on bearing witness to this thing.

Shin Mazinger wasn't bad!

just everything else I touched that season

blame zorak, he was a massive cocksucker and prevented you from getting CDA until my real job meant it was off limits

You can also blame CC, she has really serious issues and thinks I take internet people as seriously as she does, and she's really bad at actually editing thirty chapters worth of scripts
I like Shin Mazinger though. Just not that font!!!

So.

Let's talk about ANN talking about Puella Magi Madoka Magica, shall we?

[...]Thankfully, not only do these four episodes succeed wildly in living up to what came before, the stakes are raised exponentially and the show pulls off a very difficult trick – brilliantly expanding on and discussing its themes solely through character development, something so few shows even attempt to do. That Madoka Magica does it and makes it look easy is something of a revelation.

[...]Representing cynicism is Kyoko, the sneering, confident redheaded magical girl we're introduced to at the end of episode 4. Kyoko has decided that as magical girls, they're at the top of the “food chain”, killing the witches who kill weak humans. She's all cruel Darwinism, smugly dismissing the idea that you should ever do anything for anyone else, especially if you're powerful and important.

[...]Sayaka herself winds up being the biggest clue we have about which side of this philosophical argument the screenwriters fall on....and it's a powerful and fascinating piece of writing.

[...]The show is two-thirds over and right now there are no signs of it falling apart – this is a brutal, emotionally complex and beautiful story and feels like one of the most artistically vital anime series made in recent memory. What they do with the ending now is absolutely crucial, and whether or not this show sticks the landing will determine if the work as a whole is a success, but these episodes are so well-executed it's hard to imagine the ending will wind up being a letdown. For the time being, however, it's easy to appreciate what they've accomplished so far.
Based on the sales numbers, it's hard to disagree.

That part in ep14 actually wasn't bad. I was HOPING that scene meant TIME TO CONNECT SHOWS NOW since they were being reborn and it showed the true Aquarion reacting.

But NOPE, just let them POWER UP and there's still no connections :(

I like the show, and the first half goofing around episodic was good like the first half of the original Aquarion, but now that it's getting plot-centric and serious the connection teasing is starting to become annoying.

Aquarion Evol is just Kawamori phoning it in. We all know that the upcoming AKB0048 is what he's really putting his heart and soul into.

Man, this was a roller coaster. This season was definitely not as cheerful as the 1st for sure. The constant run around of
misunderstandings and lack of clarification between the two leads
made this 2-3 episodes longer than it had to be (which could've been used to give Yano her personal arc). That may be unfair to say though since I have yet to read the manga and have no clue on how far it runs until it reaches her arc (if she even has one).

That said I'm glad I stuck with it. I developed a new found respect for
Kurumi
. She's still a bitch, but she can respect others who put their mind to it.. Not to mention
seeing her stand up for Sawako against the Kazehaya fangirls from the 1st season was a pretty awesome sight.

As others mentioned before Yano and Yoshida are the best. When I do read the manga, it will be because I want to see further developments with them.

Seeing Ryu tell Yoshida that he liked her was nice, but I was hoping for something more dramatic/intimate. Dammit!

Time to start season 3!

No, what I'm saying is the first episode of the anime is definitively superior to the first chapter of the manga because the anime has a consistent tone and executes it well, while the manga has a bizarre, inconsistent tone, and is nowhere near as interesting visually, nor is the character development as strong due to the anime having additional scenes for that purpose.

Tone is one of the few things that can actually get away with being inconsistent and may even benefit the work. In the manga, it's pretty effective when the Cerebus Syndrome kicks in because a unified tone can go further when it's preceded by an inconsistent one.

Character development, I agree with, but the actual characters themselves (particularly Furuya) are pretty different and again I wouldn't say better or worse across the 2 mediums. Furuya has a much more colorful personality in the manga while there isn't really much to his character in the anime. I actually prefer the anime one because I hate those cat expressions, but I wouldn't fault someone for thinking the opposite.

Visually, well a full-blown anime production is usually prettier than its manga counterpart.

At least the animators are having fun making this cartoon. Maybe I would appreciate it on any level if the dude had a penis. I don't think I will miss out on anything as long as you guys keep on making gifs of the important stuff.
I meant the ones on your TV screen that lazy creators forgot to fill my making their shows 4:3 to save money.
Why you gotta focus on the unimportant stuff, man?

I...don't know. 2007 was the best year in anime for the last decade, but I don't know if any particular season was as jam packed as this one. Spring 2007 did have:

Darker than Black
Dennou Coil
Gurren Lagann
Oh! Edo-Rocket
Moribito
To Terra
Emma S2
The Skullman

That's a very strong list.

2012 Spring by comparison has.

Space brothers
Mysterious girlfriend X
Lupin the third : the woman called fujiko mine
Kids on the slope
Tsuritama
Eureka seven AO
Fate/zero S2
Saint seiya omega

+ that zombie moe show whatever it's called and Hyouka which has yet to air.

2007 Spring still has better shows really, and you forgot about Lucky star and Lovely complex on your list! although we have no idea whether we will still be reccomending half these spring 2012 shows by the time they all end!!!

I can't agree with that at all. Inconsistent tone nearly always ruins works.

Not when it's DEEN it isn't. Actually, that's not true a considerable amount of the time.

If you were looking for laughs you could have just posted this:

"Art : A
Animation : B"

The fact that ANN assign a score to something they simply call 'Art' consistently amazes me. I whenever you score a film, or a game or whatever then you're scoring 'art' - but at least they don't actually have a box on their reviews labelled 'art'.

Well, it's too early to say that this season could match Spring 2007, but even the fact that we can compare them at all is incredible. I wouldn't have imagined such a thing could be possible in recent seasons.

Also, from dresden: some dudes who read Newtype magazine like Ararararararagi. The toothbrush saves anime, etc.

Seriously, what is it about Shu and Inori that ranks them so high up? It's absolutely perplexing. Is it because the show has mechas or something, that's the only thing that would make a lick sense, probably.

God you're right.

I don't think I have very much interesting to say here. I like the bright color of the show. The direction is kind of frantic, but it's still easy to follow, which is nice.

I don't like Haru. Not only does he sound obnoxious, but I kind of hate the way he bends the plot around him through the first episode. Thanks to
Yuki's grandma letting him live with them for no clear reason at all
and
his magic mind-control watergun
, he can just plant himself in the center of things without anyone being able to so much as object. I'm sure there are good reasons for this that will be explained, but for now it just makes me vaguely annoyed.

At the very least, it's a pretty interesting contrast to Apollon (or is Kids on the Slope our preferred title?) which treats a similar premise with a similar protagonist in a completely different way.

Well, as none of the shows for this season have finished yet it's wholly impossible to compare the two seasons, I was just highlighting the most exciting season in anime.

Absolutely. Tone is very important.

Far too many anime series suffer from absolutely zero consistent tone, mixing melodrama with slapstick comedy that can occur at any time. It's a big problem within anime in particular I think.

Honestly, looking back at 2007 I realized I've only finished 3 shows from the spring season. Maybe it wasn't that great to begin with, maybe spring 2012 is going end up being better after all?!

There's not a single show as good as Gurren Lagann this season yet though, despite how high-quality most of the shows are.

I feel like I should make an Angel Beats joke but I've just ragged on it yesterday. I'll give it a break.

I tend to think this kind of tonal inconsistency shows a lack of faith in the dramatic elements.

*cough*KEY*cough*
The worst part is that anime fans lap it up. Every time I see someone say "this series is like a comedy and a drama and an action series all in one every episode!" (usually in reference to Key junk or Key-related junk like Clannad or Angel Beats) I feel like shouting at things.

It's just not a good thing. Obligatory. Replace words to make it work for anime in your mind.

Tsuritama 1:
Pretty good first episode. The sound direction in particular is great, and I think there are some very well executed visual moments (especially whenever we get the water stuff blending in with reality). I also really like the whole look of the show, and I feel like Yuki is a good protagonist. His internal monologues are good, and I feel interested in him. I'm not 100% sure on the story, but the first episode at least set that all up well.

actually not trolling you, seriously, duck's the only other guy who would nail that strict mix of loving good things and hating bad things, and he's busy sucking F/Z's cock

which is a really impressive, smegmaless, and pointy cock. but still!

Gintama is the only show I've seen that can actually make that kind of tone mixture work. It helps that when it really wants to be taken seriously, it makes a careful gradual shift between being mostly comedy and mostly drama.

Honestly, looking back at 2007 I realized I've only finished 3 shows from the spring season. Maybe it wasn't that great to begin with, maybe spring 2012 is going end up being better after all?!

Spring 2007 had Dennou Coil. Spring 2012 does not have Dennou Coil. Ergo Spring 2007 is superior.

Apparently, Gundam Unicorn is making up for the failure of Gundam AGE.
According to the Nikkei Marketing Journal, the rating of Mobile Suit Gundam AGE has been hovering around the 2% level. Although the main target of the TV series is preteen boys, the rating among the kids sometimes goes down to zero. Bandai has been aware of the unpopularity of Gundam AGE among the kids and they tried to identify the reason by conducting a questionnaire survey. What they found from the survey was the kids today are unfamiliar with wars and space colonies. To draw attentions of those kids, Bandai featured scenes at school in Asem's Arc, but their attempt failed to obtain the expected result.

Despite the failure of Gundam AGE, Kazunori Ueno, the President of Bandai Namco Holdings, has been keeping his composure to the business. At the beginning of this year, Ueno encouraged the disheartened staff of Gundam AGE by saying "Don't be in panic." The reason for his calmness is the favorable status of the whole Gundam sales, which has grown by 18% year-on-year. The increase is mainly attributed to the success of Gundam Unicorn. Bandai Namco HD will expand the business by coordinating the subsidiary companies taking advantage of the popularity of Gundam Unicorn among fans in their 30 - 40's.
