"All you need to do is like something."

I've said it before, but I really wonder what this show would've been like if they chose the "For Fun" path instead of "For Glory" at the start of the season. Probably would've had more creativity and discovery, and hopefully more Hazuki. Kumiko might've still found a reason to run herself ragged, in a society that encourages that sort of thing all the way up to the salarymen, but it would probably be easier to fall. I like the concept behind this show, and I will admit it's been pulled off well, but there's several things that I'm still trying to reason out just how I feel about it, that have as much to do with the fandom's reactions bleeding into my own reactions, and what this says about the anime macrofandom as a whole.

At least I have the character songs. Tomoyo Kurosawa is a damn good singer.

Barring something drastic, I imagine a 2nd season for BBB is going to greenlit fairly soon. It's BONES's best selling show of all time outside of FMA. There's more than enough material for more seasons and it seems this is a sort of passion project for Matsumoto. Also I'm sure Matsumoto is ecstatic that she doesn't have to back to the Toei factory.

Why not both? Sheesh the negativity.

Well, what's wrong with a negative response?

- A person can only do one thing at time, so if she's making more BBB then she's not making something that could actually be good.

- I think the show is pretty bad, so the prospect of more of it does not appeal.

- I don't think it's a particular good showing for Rie Matsumoto. Her direction is far less interesting and engaging than her work on Kyousougiga.

So no, I don't want to see a director making more of something I don't like, badly.

Well I can't disagree with your own personal assessment but I think she's done a fairly good job visually with the show and her own direction is pretty prevalent throughout the show. Kyousougiga had a shit load of problems too, partially due to her direction and script. I think she made an interesting work out of something that could have been much more mundane.

The biggest problem for me was the production values and now that it's a big hit for BONES, I see no reason why they would skimp out time/money-wise on a 2nd season. Also the anime-only inclusions have been fairly well received so she doesn't have to have a strict adherence to the manga going forward either.

Well from what I see, it seems Matsumoto Rie is ecstatic about this series especially seeing the amount of passion she has put in adapting Kekkai Sensen. From recent translated interview it really conveys how much effort and energy she put into this project. So I doubt she would stop doing more if she was asked to because this series goes really well with her style of directing.

It sucks that you think Kekkai Sensen is a bad anime and wouldn't want more, but it's great for people who are eager for more. Anyway I'm glad it has a better chance of getting a second season unlike Kyousougiga which I loved and adored because of mediocre sales and Toei. Plus it's giving Matsumoto Rie some recognition she deserves.

I have always found that your opinion of BBB is a bit harsh but is your opinion and you have explained it in detail (and not that I disagree with some of your points, but I find them less detrimental compared with the things I enjoy of the show).

However, thanks to you and given Kyousougiga is in CR I know what I'm going to watch after BBB is finished, so thanks for it ;)

Full Moon Wo Sagashite ep. 13-18:
Some intense moments building up in this one at times. The whole Takuto/Mitsuki thing is kinda weird in a way, but there has to be a deeper link there as Meroko just hinted at. They are still playing the same song, but the music is still nice and the characters are engaging...

I will certainly agree that BBB had far better direction than, say, your average generic shounen action series. I never implicitly said her direction was bad, its just far less interesting than her earlier work.

BBB would certainly have been even worse than it already is without her efforts.

Yeah you should definitely watch Kyousougiga because it's such a wonderful and creative series and personally one of my top favorite anime. Be sure not to watch episode zero first, watch the first 10 episodes and then watch episode zero last.

Very happy to see BBB doing well. Though I kinda hope it doesn't exceed the magical 24-26 episode count.

Well the source material doesn't have enough for 2cour just only one cour unless they add some more anime original content which I doubt will happen.

Haven't seen BBB due to most of the negative feedback around here, but I have seen the ED and I gotta say, it's a freaking awesome ED.

So many EDs you normally see in anime have this melancholic feel to it as the characters from the show all look into the distance or something like that.

BBB's ED is all the characters dancing to a groovy tune on stage. More EDs like that please!

I believe a new song should be coming soon. The story has a couple twists, but I believe you'll figure them out before Full Moon says it outright, you're getting along nicely! =)

Sound! Euphonium Episode 12:

This episode was a pretty perfect showcase of both what this show does well and what it gets shit both at once. On the up side we get to see some rather shockingly complex characters struggle as the competition nears and the myriad of emotions and the revelations that come with it;
Kumiko finally understanding why she plays in concert band, why she plays the Eupho and why Reina was so upset were top notch stuff.
I don't think there has been an anime season that has brought the depth of character to the table this season. On the other hand, whatever the merits of seeing the practitioners demonstrate ad infinitum it isn't terribly interesting to watch, in fact, there were some moment that were so tedious are started looking at social networking. This series would do well to learn why as cliched as they are the sports montage is used. On the shipping front Kumiko and Reina show why that is the preferred ship in this episode. It isn't just about them both being girls here, at least not from my viewpoint, it is because they have that ineffable sexual tension and chemistry along with the fact that friends, lovers or whatever. they are a pair that pushes one another to new heights and levels as well as offering comfort and consolation with each other.
This episode also highlights why Shinichi sucks so much, dude had a golden fucking opportunity to become the consoling white knight when Kumiko was at her lowest moment of despair and he just stopped there flapping in the breeze. Just goes to show no matter how hard they were pushing him Shinichi is barely relevant C-List trash. As far as the Taki option goes, I like him, so I hope nothing serious happens there because seriously fuck off that creepy shit.

It's divisive, but there's something there. I'd say give it a shot.

Well it's really split, some people find it enjoyable and others don't so take it as you will. I find it enjoyable especially with the energetic cast and I love how episodic it is and the worldbuilding is nice. The direction is nice and the lack of infodumping is great as well. It's not offensive in any way just pure fun.

So give it a try to find out if you like it.

Not that I've seen a lot of them, but typically the other male characters in a harem serve as sidekicks or comedic foils.

I really wish this wasn't the case. It'd be a nice change of pace for there to be a good romance show with like, 3 main guys and 3 main girls. To make things even and everything.

kekkai sensen letimiately has some of the most incoherent direction i've seen in a long time. not even talking about the stupid convoluted plot, but the way scenes blend into each other is embarrassingly halfhearted and unfocused.

add in lazy references for humor. bait character designs. another ugly show that know-nothings mislabel as "sakuga porn". a literal dumping ground of ideas that cohere into nothing that is again mislabeled as "creative".

guaranteed anncast's and kotaku's top three shows of the year and that should tell you everything.

Im still blown away at this shows visuals, the Kumiko running scene
song_siren.gif

This episode's director was the famous animator Yoshiji Kigami and that cut was likely done/supervised by him. It's a style that few other directors would attempt in 2D.

I'm going to need some time to calm down and formulate words from my thoughts besides "oh my god, this is soooooo good" for this episode.

Doesn't it get tiring being so upset that people like things you don't like?

I agree with most of this. Fun show!

Those Eupho sales...

Keep in mind these (as always) are estimates from Oricon from their partner stores. They are not a 100% conclusive amount of the units sold to retailers by the distributors. Additionally, the KyoAni Shop is not a partner store for Oricon, so there is a guaranteed amount that will not be calculated by them. It's somewhat of a comparison to other titles released around that time, but it's useless in actual determination if anything's sold well.

I jokingly say Oricon's like Whose Line is it Anyway: everything's made up and the points don't matter.

Great episode that went deep into Kumiko's struggle and realization of why she is doing what she is doing. I too felt like they repeated the practice sessions a bit too much, but it just emphasized how gruelling and repetitive these must be for those who are practicing too.

The running scene was some god-tier 2D animation right there, we are at a stage in anime that 3D is getting used more and more for stuff like this, so seeing it in motion, and actually having it look as great as it did was quite the feat.

Hibike! Euphonium - 12

Everyone that practiced an instrument understands this just too well.

Very nice episode that portrays Kumiko's struggle to improve at the rate she'd love to, which is something that has become increasingly important to her to begin with. While I wish I could say every scene works well for me, I'm afraid this episode was once again tipping it's feet into melodrama. When Kumiko starts running in her frustration and disappointment, it flipflops from "what an amazing scene" to "ehh...this is a bit too much..." a couple times for me. The screaming for instance was a bit questionable, especially when Shuichi joined in.

Speaking of whom, I so far defended his characters and relation to Kumiko, however I wish they'd just go somewhere else than "they randomly cross paths again" (I know, same school way and all but still) and then little interesting happens. I would've preferred a proper conversation concerning both parties annoyance with their lacking progress and see them bound a bit over that instead of...this 'scream-off'.

However, I'll admit that I'm a bit nitpicky here, which shows that I care about this show enough for more or less minor details to bother me.

Btw. Taki-sensei is a quite good character but I still don't think his overly harsh teaching methods are the right way to go about things. Kumiko cannot be blamed for misinterpreting Taki, thinking she wouldn't participate Asuka at that certain part in the piece. All that stress could've been avoided if the guy just took the time to talk a bit more to her and maybe others who struggle to keep up with his demands. Sure "you're not good enough" is one way to motivate someone, especially in a band setting, but that shouldn't be all there is.

PS:
I don't mind showing us the students practicing a lot because really, that's just part of it. You have to play a lot to get better and I appreciate the show acknowledging just that. I mean you can still overdo it but I don't think it's doing that yet.

Damn, this one runs through the first episode like a normal school time anime, then in the second it hits you hard. It is definately a crazy love triangle that pulls you into the character's depths of depression and pain, but also throws in spurts of comedy (not really needed, but watching the waitress get owned constantly is great) You can take any of their perspective and really put yourself in their shoes and trying to find a right or wrong answer for this one would prove very difficult. Also, I forgot to mention that this anime, by far, has the most realistic relationships (including sex) that I have seen in anime. The situation itself may be very anime, but the way they handle their day to day life is very realistic and believable..

I can't wait to watch more tomorrow, but I swear, between this one and Full Moon, the next couple days are going to be tough....

Isn't this the show where a girl wakes up from a coma for three years and the doctor tells the parents not to tell her she's been asleep for that long?

Yes because she has an internal time gap.

You're hitting the bottom of the barrel now dude.

Lol, true, but it was the first season show I picked off my MAL.

Daijōbu daijōbu, Cornbread.

I'm still fearing the tough part of Full Moon, she is just too cute..
