Star Wars KOTOR 2 Gets Big Update + out on Mac & Linux

Yes, under Windows as well. Why wouldn't it?

Assasult on Dark Athena was D3D if I'm not mistaken, original Butcher Bay was OpenGL though.

AMD's OpenGL driver is still as shitty as it used to be when you compare it to NV's. There's also that little thing that KOTOR2 was ported from the original Xbox which had NV GPU in it. The game was always somewhat problematic to run on ATI/AMD hardware because of these reasons.

Yeah I was completely unaware that the PC version also ran on OpenGL :lol. Odd decision considering even the Xbox used some form of DirectX though, didn't it?
Thanks for clarifying though, at least the game runs better than it did last time I played it, it used to go below 30 FPS constantly but now it manages to stay above it. Still, kinda odd that a 280x can't at least bruteforce performance out of an Xbox port.'

Oddly enough, the first game does run at a locked 60 if I disable Frambuffer Effects, but the settings menu in 2 seems to be bugged because sometimes when I disable them it the framerate is still butt and if I check the options all it did was either disable shadows altogether or disable smooth shadows, with the framebuffer effects still on. I better just go into the settings file and and disable it and make it read only I guess. I mean you miss out on what, fancy cloak device effects? Not a huge deal

Not really. Except that KotOR 1 is superior in pretty much every way

Nope. KOTOR II is almost objectively better. It's better written, got better characters, better locations, etc. The only thing KOTOR 1 does better is the ending and that's just because Obsidian wasn't allowed to finish the game.

Well, I disagree entirely. KotOR 1 is better written, has better characters and better locations. If KotOR 2 had been finished, the story might have been average.

And KotOR 1's gameplay was better. Not really good, but better.

You missed that KotOR 2 also has a more fleshed out underlying RPG system.

Absolutely.

Heh. Next you'll be saying PC MASTER RACE unironically...

Anyway if people are having trouble with crashes etc...it may have been mentioned before but turn off Frame Buffer Effects. Should fix things so you could play in Fullscreen mode etc.

Adding annoying fiddly bits to a system whose only virtue was that it was simple enough to not get in the way isn't a good thing.

I mean, if they'd made the combat actually challenging or interesting, it'd be different, but they didn't.

The only ones who ever do that on GAF are console fanboys. I have said and will continue to say as long as I live that open platforms are better for gaming, games and gamers. The fact that you get free "HD remasters" is just another instance of that.

Mac version looks gorgeous on my rMBP 15" retina screen. Proper widescreen support has really breathed new life into this game!

You really find the latter an example of good writing? It's Oblivion's standard overwritten crap

lol.

Every BioWare RPG has the exact same character templates. Carth Onasi IS Kaiden Alenko right down to the voice actor. Mission is Tali, Bastila is Liara, etc.

Different game, same cast.

Reposting this but I can't set the resolution to anything but 1280 x 720? My desktop res is 1080p, help me!
Did you try this?
I couldn't get 1080p either at first. I ended up fixing it by going to the swkotor2.exe (c:/ > Program Files (x86) > Steam > Steamapps > common > Knights of the Old Republic II), right clicking it and then checking 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings' under the Compatibility tab.

Hope this helps!

Sure, its bombastic, but its decent in kind of Conan the Barbarian way, unlike the top which is about as complex as a villain in kids GI Joe cartoons.

Considering that Kotor itself is a love letter to A New Hope I don't really feel that Malak is any more of a G.I Joe villain than Vader was in that movie.

But by all means keep reposting that image in lieu of actual argument for another decade.

Malak isn't one of the better characters in KotOR1, I'll admit, and the line obviously was picked out to be corny. Not that corny isn't appropriate for Sith Lords - "Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battlesation!"

But Sion's "and her little dog too!" rant was apparently picked to be good!

I found a fix for the bad framerates on AMD cards on the Steam user forums :D.
All you have to do is enable GPU Overdrive, you can just leave it at stock settings and the game will run smooth as butter. Apparently the AMD GPUs downclock when playing the KotoR titles for whatever reason, setting up overdrive forces it to run at normal clockspeeds. So now I have all the settings on and maxed out AA/AF and the framerate is buttery smooth :)

What a stupid little issue that could probably be sorted out easily by AMD :lol. Like, it's fine if the GPU underclocks if it can run a game at nice speeds, but there should be an option to force it to clock up higher/closer to its stock clock if the framerate falls under a certain threshold.

Edit: It's weird how the fix isn't more widely known, it's so easy to do too :lol, no need to mess with dll files and shit.

Not under Windows, is it? Besides AMD's OpenGL drivers aren't anywhere as shitty as they used to be. I mean my 5870 that I had years ago handled Assault on Dark Athena perfectly for example :P

Edit: How do I get DSR to work with the game? I have it enabled and I'm already running other games in 1440p, but I'm not able to here, they said you could select up to 5K resos so what gives?

Edit #2: And yep. Game still runs like trash when you enable Frame Buffer Effects. God dammit. Fakeedit: Oh, you can just swap out the ATIOGLXX.dll file for a newer one to resolve some issues.

I've had no performance issues with AMD and framebuffer effects. to use DSR or VSR I figure you're going to have to go and change the resolution on the desktop.

The thing about the AMD implementation of OpenGL is that it is closer to reference than Nvidia, which contains all sorts of hacks and workarounds. This of course means that it performs better as the driver fixes the opengl problems people inevitably add. It shouldn't be the case but driver fixes are very much the case for DX and OGL.

We'll see less prevalence of that in Vulkan and Dx12.

e: yeah I always run with overdrive enabled (my card is clocked up the wazoo).

Ha-ha-ha!

Durante do you know or can you surmise that this new update will break all existing mods. I had a Disciple and Handmaiden mod that allowed them to join you regardless of gender.

Also will all mods have to move through the steam workshop or will we be able to use previous overwrite methods?

This is great news. I just started gearing up for Episode 7 by starting Republic Commando. I was planning on playing through Jedi Knight and a couple of other games, but KOTOR2 wasn't actually on the list despite owning it. If it's easy to get up and running on widescreen with the must-have mods, then I may actually take a stab at it.

I don't know if it's been covered in this thread but regarding controller support: does it show actual Xbox button prompts or is it like San Andreas and just show Joystick 1 or whatever stupid useless prompts instead?

Played using a wireless 360 pad: Definitely shows 360 button prompts, the prologue excepted.

The prologue, which is voiced, still references all the original keyboard commands.

The one thing I noticed is that it looks like the UI hasn't been scaled for widescreen. I feel like it looks squished. Is it just me?

I think I found the first "bug" (or flaw?) in this Linux build.

My monitor is the Eizo Foris with 1080p@120hz.

KOTOR 2 resolution options:

xrandr output:
Code:

The Game seems to offer a generic list of resolutions and refresh rates, instead of arbitrary.

Can anyone confirm this?

Sounds great, I'll have to try this when I get home.

I'm thinking about jumping on this. I played KOTOR1, but I never got around to playing the second one. Should run fine on my Mac, too.

My monitor is running at 1080p 120Hz as well; KOTORs options were 1080p@60Hz and, weirdly, 1080p@84 Hz. I set it to 60Hz with vsync on, and according to the Steam fps overlay it ended up running at 120. I didn't check xrandr or anything.
