Star Wars Outlaws' Director: 'Bad Faith' Discourse About Protagonist's Appearance 'Not Worth Engaging In'

It's like the dev team has invaded this thread with all the gaslighting and "Oh you want a fuckable character" talk going on in here :messenger_grinning_smiling: :messenger_grinning_smiling: :messenger_grinning_smiling:

The dev is wrong to immediately shoot down all discourse of the character's appearance as "not worthy of engaging in". Is that how you want to talk to potential buyers of your product? Well, fuck you.....looking at your game, the game itself doesn't appear to be worth engaging in.
Strawmaning is the only way the wakkos defending this can cope and argue as usual... its better just ignore..

They butchered her because they cant stand beautiful women

She's alright. There's a million of her type tho. We all know that the real beauty is the personality. Could well be ok on the outside but a cunt inside, like alot of women. 😅

Agreed.

Yeah, getting incel adjacent vibes when they go through the process of going out of their way to hire these conventionally attractive models and then roughing them up in the final version.
You can tell just by their twitter profile they are weird. And you dont even have to see a pic of them or their tweets.

Just read their two sentence profile which is usually odd things like: their profile name is based on a video game character or nickname / emotes / pronouns / angry liberal / or cheeky odd sayings like they are master boss of board games or expert bike tire pumper

Their profiles are pretty peculiar compared to non-gaming people. But one thing that holds true..... always looking for attention with egotistical and self motivation bios.

It's not a matter of her being ugly i think more than she just looks badly made. Like someone did a bad job drawing a char. Trilla on Fallen Order wasn't beautiful or anything but she looked decent. Cool and badass character. It was the same thing for the Mass Effect Andromeda character. To me it seemed like they made a badly made character in a character creator rather than a fine tuned protagonist.

I can understand these jealous and political artists purposely making female characters dumpy, while conveniently keeping the men hunks.

What is odd is why bother even hiring good looking actresses to begin with then? I'm going to assume better looking ones cost more. So just save some cash and hire a meh looking actress and go hog wild matching.

But what I think happens is they purposely do this to spite gamers and even the actress as their way of getting back at society for being outcasted losers. Just imagine what these people are like at family holiday dinners. There is no doubt in my mind just about everyone in their family tree thinks they are weird. So good ol 50 or 70 year old mom and dad probably lay them a lecture at dinner in front of everyone. Their best weapon is to bring their miserable home life to work and try to infuse it into products.

I strongly suspect it’s something like this. I bet her initial design was gorgeous, but then all the fat ugly harpies on their design team had their way with it.

The biggest diference between western and eastern devs, is everething the players say is taking into consideration by eastern devs cuz they know very well they have to make a game for players cuz they are the consumer. While western devs see themselves above criticism, with a "if you dont like it dont buy it" mentality. And thats why alot of western games are not selling. The Concord devs had the same atitude when ppl started criticising the character design. Now i cant wait for the day the studio shuts down and ppl either get fired or merge into another studio. Hopefully the leads all get fired and they keep the talented programers for another studios.

This is a huge part of it. But don't ever say that, we need to respect their creative vision. Choosing to spite and gaslight is a right that we must defend.

Ironically, actually yes we do. They can make any game they want. But everyone else's right to have an opinion about it must be defended at the same time. If we think their PR/behavior is garbage we can express that opinion just like they can express their "creative vision". What they are doing amounts to "take our message and don't dare have an opinion on it, just eat it". Get the fuck out of here.

if a company wants to make products that turn off lots of people, go ahead. Million dollar sports cars arent meant for Honda Civic drivers. They cost a ton, a sports sedan, and probably require someone who knows have to drive manual. But thats fine because they only need to sell 500 per year, not 500,000 Civics.

Problem is, game makers/TV/Movies with a niche following product are being aimed at mainstream audiences. And a decent budget to boot so it requires mainstream sales.

The product/budget doesn't match the pie slice of sales and interest they are gunning for.

This problem comes from the subtle shift of going from trying to win customers to trying to influence and manipulate customers.

That is also where "the customer is the problem" comes from when it doesn't work very well. We ate up said IP for ages, we were supposed to keep going like lemmings and let it "condition" us. We lost the script!

Thats why i dont complain when games like Goodbye Volcano High releases. Thers an audience for those kinds of games, its a small audience but as long the budgets is reasonable devs can keep making those games. My problem is when the devs grab an well stablished IP, being Spider Man, Star Wars, Ass Creed and many more just to inject they politics and agendas on them. The Concord devs get my respect for ruining they own IP, but deserve all the shit they gonna get for making a tripple A game while saying the players criticism was "White noise". Now go indie or get fucked.

The “bad faith” argument is hand waving away the criticism by reducing it to “hurr durr character ugly”.

The issue is the absolute ridiculous double standard. They took a pretty model and uglified modernized her because “pandering to the male gaze bad!” but they leave attractive men just as they are and, in fact, beefcake up their body models more often than not.

I’m pretty sure feminism didn’t intend on saying women in media need to be uglied up because men shouldn’t like attractive women. But that is the message this (and the outrage over Stellar Blade) sends.

It was pretty hilarious when that game got upstaged by 4chan and Snoot Game.

Is he a child?

If she was modeled from scratch (aka, not modeled after a real person), nobody would care. It's a western game, in the 2020s. Of course the protagonist looks boring as shit.

Is the fact that she barely looks like the person she was modeled after. What's the point of going through all that, if you are going to change and low-res the shit out of her face?

I don't have a horse here, I'm a ugly balding motherfucker. Not in a million years would I go about someone, fictional or not, being ugly.

The issue is so obvious. Adress it or not.

...but it just further emphasises the point that "all" Sw stuff "good" or "bad" is well supported - on a first pass at least

This is also not true, at least on its face...

What do you mean? "Well supported" relative to what? What does well supported have to do with this stupid complaint about character "ugliness"?

Notice he doesn't act offended on behalf of the actress, because he sure as shit knows they didn't reproduce what she looks like.

Meanwhile, have you seen that video of her knocking out stormtroopers by hitting their huge helmets with the back of her hand. It's insane.

Yeah it's so blatantly not an accident that there was a reason behind it.

I'm not even going to speculate on what that was but going all Obi Wan on us is weak.

I would also highly recommend everyone take ALL reviews once this launches with a grain of salt.....this is what IGN considers groundbreaking and awesome.....Mel Gibson slapping a stormtrooper in the head.

I really hate it when gaming media can’t stay unbiased. And so many big ones are in the US where things are upside down from a global perspective. Can’t wait for them all to close, can’t be trusted anyway, they’re just there for publishers to use to get a MC score to use at launch, and biased media can go together and rise or sink a game for whatever personal reason if they so want. And review code isn’t the same as us consumers gets to play anyway so who cares and games are patched for months so nothing is relevant unless you play day 1 and then you’ve probably preordered anyway.

Im sorry but I don't like to play with ugly ass characters. I played Concord for maybe 20 minutes and stop because the characters looked fucking stupid.

These morons are utterly incapable of selling their game. They are so thick.

Just say ‘It’s a pity to hear that. What I can guarantee is that anyone who picks up the game will have an awesome time playing a brilliant game in the Star Wars universe. We want people to have fun’.

But no. Fucking bellends need to signal their virtue.

Cunts.

I agree with him fully and I don't think it is the kind of gotcha some of you are making it out to be. He also states in his Twitter that he loves diversity in body shapes and sizes. He is frustrated that Black Women often aren't afforded the same kind of variety. He also then states how Vale from Concord is done right. For all the talk about Concord is woke and there aren't any beautiful women in games, I'm curious on how no one here really mentions Vale and just cherry picks.

I think this has less to do with an agenda and more about studios not wanting to put the amount of time of learning how to do proper hair that isn't short or and sticking to the same generic kinds of hairstyles and looks because it is easier to render. I could also be wrong with that assumption.

It's not a "gotcha," it's literally what you asked for. You said that the decision to make characters ulgier wasn't being forced. It is, as the artist's tweet shows. To think this guy's tweet is the only example of it, or that it's only done to black female characters, is ridiculous. Especially when we have mutlple concrete instances of Western characters who have had their faces dramatically changed from the original models to remove traditionally beautiful and feminine features. It's become a running joke, but it's not even funny anymore, it's just sad. But don't believe your lying eyes, I guess.

I mean it very well could be I would need something much more concrete to go and get offended and believe that someone purposely did something to make someone look worse based on some sort of hate

I can't just jump down that conclusion with so little information.

Well specifically reading the tweet all I'm getting is that he's pitched an idea on a character and the lead artist returned with something that did not have a lot of the things he talked about regarding his "original beauty" that he picked out but the problem is is this is a subjective thing, this might simply mean that the artist that was having the final say has a different idea of beauty

That's it

Looking at this thread I've noticed so many different perspectives and what people think is attractive and there are people who even post pictures of things they believe look good in others who disagree, this is simply not an idea that is a one size fits all to pretend somebody making a different choice on 1 of those characters was specifically because they wanted it to be ugly, like their main intent was this.

They may have simply wanted it to look the way they wanted it to look in their opinion of what they thought beautiful was... For all you know that person's pornhub history shows exactly what he actually thinks is attractive and it differs from that person who did the tweet lol 😆

So I just don't have enough information here to say that person's true intent was to make something even he disliked because we don't even have enough evidence to suggest that.

This is sorta like you being a cook and suggesting I add something to a dish, I disagree and add a different ingredient.

"OMG, he purposely made the dish bad, like he hates humans and wants them to die and put it to poison someone maybe, like he wants the restaurant shut down" lol I kid, but do you see how odd it sounds when simply a differing opinion, suddenly turns into ill intent? If someone is pitching an idea, it is simply a suggestion, someone doing something differently does not mean they want the opposite thing, it might merely mean they disagree with your pitch.

The reaction to this simply cannot be "he wants it ugly, thats why he won't listen to me" or "he wants to restaurant to fail and the food to taste bad, that MUST BE the only reason he disagreed with me and put in lemon pepper wings"

So, I'm not saying someone has never done this, I'm sure 100% this has occurred, merely that lots of what many on shown here isn't even good proof. We don't even have accounts from all parties involved to come to any conclusion, simply assumptions, speculation etc.

Regardless, i don't even think many of you honestly even really wish to have this conversation, you merely wish to attack people on here that don't agree with you.

Relative to most things that aren't SW when spinning off a new game.

It is one of the top 10 most recognized franchises in the world and converted and shown in some very niche languages, so literally guarantees instant exposure.
Even the latest iPhone adverts are about a SW Boba/ Mandalorian and they need no additional exposure but still co-brand because of the almost unique strength of SW to keep people watching even an advert, and then bring sales.

If the males can be 1:1 you should be able to do the same with the women. The actress for Resident evil 3 looks like the actress shes both attractive and strong and it doesn't take away from her as a character.

This stuff isn't rocket science they been doing this in comics, movies and games. Its a waste of time hiring these models if all your going to do is make them look worse in the game, its not about fapping or whatever people want to use to gaslight rational people.

If you can make the male models/actors look like how they look in real life, you should be able to do the same with women.

How much of a magic hand does this woman have to knock people out by hitting their helmet? If she karate-chopped the stormtrooper's neck that would be somewhat believable.

Whether intentional or not, this particular avenue to talk about Star Wars: Outlaws just feels like a distraction from talking about the game as a whole. It's lame. It's stupid. It's not even secondary, it should be tertiary in regards to the game itself. This is some shit that gets spawned from and is argued within dumb threads on Twitter. Straight Twitter Trash, this is.

Something worth pointing out about the IGN article and the Washington Post interview: The Washington Post interview has a standard headline, while the title of the IGN piece is zeroing in on the section from the interview about the criticism towards Kay's appearance. Even Julian Gerighty himself said "it's not worth engaging with" (which I still agree with, even though I will question why he brought it up), meanwhile, here's IGN focusing on that for both the headline and the subheading for an article.

Sure, if I really wanted to be cynical, I could see Julian Gerighty even bringing this up at all (despite it being "not worth engaging with") intentionally as a distraction. But also, maybe he just felt like he needed to address it. I might be able to give him the benefit of the doubt. Whereas IGN being IGN, I think you can safely examine their article being titled the way it is as an attention grab.

I hate everything about this. At this point, I just want to see if Star Wars: Outlaws is good or not.

Ten virtue signalling points have been added to your social credit score.

lol what an observation... literally one of the most pointless things to say in this kind of "conversation", as if people on both sides of this aren't "signaling" their own virtue/s?

This is the problem with using words and language without actually understanding their implications. Thank you for the example in real time. (y)

That is what I'm trying to explain. We don't have enough info to make these sure conclusions. Also not everyone has the same idea of beauty or attractive.

Thanks for being reasonable. This site is an echochamber, despite having some good discussions on here.
