People don't want to be ganked? The consequence is still having to revive elsewhere usually except for waiting for your revive time, so it disrupts whatever you are doing. PVP was pretty pointless with almost no penalty in DCU but ppl did it all the time, but it was annoying to not be able to complete tasks and quests because of gankers.

PVE just is very casual friendly without having to worry about someone interfering with your game

This. Just because you want to PvP the "right" way doesn't mean everyone else on a PvP server will. What happens when high level dickweeds get bored on a PvP server? They go lowbie ganking. Yeah, yeah, "Get your guild to come help you." blah blah blah. In games where end game progression is almost entirely PvE based, I know how valuable my time is. I certainly don't want to have to ask or rely on others to come help me because some douchebags are getting off killing me over and over while I stand no chance to win.

That is honestly my biggest problem. When I have ZERO chance of defending myself, then it's not fun. Now if they made it so that someone within X levels of you couldn't attack you even if you were flagged or didn't attack them first, I'd be OK with that. Then you get into gankers who purposefully try to get hit by someone's AoEs, etc. There are ways around it though.

Finally, official media :D. And it's maps. :(.

Still, great to read on how they made the maps, and how massive the fucking game is!

Anyway, here's a cool one

It's not WoW, you can't be corpse camped. You spawn at the nearest faction checkpoint, not at the place you died.

If the GAF guilds are going PvE because they can't handle the odd death once in a while then that's definitely not the kind of guild I'll want to play with. Kind of surprising considering how much these boards claim to hate the casualization of gaming.

I hate world PVP because I hate getting ganked.

Thats why I joined Goon Squad on Mal'ganis, there's literally no alliance.

I find that PVE servers have worse players than PVP ones though.

I've always played on PvE servers, but now I feel like switching it up a bit for SWTOR. I need some danger in my life.
It adds so much more to the experience. I remember in DAoC when I'd use my alt as bait to lure high level characters out in the open, only to have my guild mates jump them. With the PvP penalties in place, they'd flee the area and leave me alone afterwards! WoW on the other hand had little to no PvP penalties, so it wasn't really worth pulling the same trick there.

World PvP is one of the key features that separates MMOs from other genres, the unpredictable nature of other players and their behavior. It gives you more to interact with than programmed AI and scripted encounters. It elevates the experience from a predetermined one into an authentically social one. Through their actions enemy players can evoke a wide variety of emotional responses ranging from camaraderie to pure rage. That's what makes it interesting and sets it apart.

The interference of other players is to me the most sublime element of an MMO. Otherwise you're just playing glorified co-op with some multiplayer maps. That is clearly all that some people want, but I think they're missing out.

Wide open world PvP seems like a great idea until some high level dickbag continuously ganks you when you are just trying to level.
Those dickbags add to the game. If darth came across some padawans they get smoked. Same in a pvp server. Pve is just too training wheels mmo for me. And im a casual non ganker.

PvP servers are a whole lot of fun. Most my friends sadly don't like them. So I don't know where I'm rolling yet. Still trying to convince them that going PvP server is best.

From the bakery:
Advanced classes are explained to you in a varitety of ways, but really the same way. For example, the Bounty Hunter goes and speaks to the Advanced Class trainer, and during your conversation, the 2 NPC's involved tell you about Powertech and how the heavy plates can save your life, but get you killed if you're not used to them, or Mercenary, which brings unprecedented firepower to the table, along with medical knowledge. Then you get a couple codex entries. IMHO, you're not given enough information to make a choice that sticks with your character forever.
That's what I'm afraid of. I want to be a Smuggler. What are the real differences between a scoundrel and a gunslinger? I have no idea. And apparently the game isn't going to tell me.

From what was written I was able to figure out what those two advanced classes do. It doesn't tell you outright but it's pretty easy to understand. Tank or DPS with a little bit of healing on the side.

Each advanced class has more then one roll, or more then one playstyle. It's not like spec'ing into a "tree" in wow.

An Advanced class is virtually a completely different class all together.

Thus why Bioware should be calling Jedi Knights, Smugglers etc., "classes". They should call them archetypes, and the "advanced classes" classes.

Although you do share some abilities between both advanced classes, you also do not. You also have two completely separate tree's per advance class.

A Gunslinger does not play the same as a scoundrel, and a healing scoundrel does not play the same as a more damage oriented Scoundrel.

I understand what advanced classes are. It just seemed to me that certain advanced classes are suited more to a certain playstyle. Such as Powertech being more for tanks and Mercenary more for DPS

I'll wait until I find out all the details of PvP servers before deciding.

Most of the time PvP is only there just to annoy the fuck out of other people - namely the low level and undergeared. If that's the case, then I'll go PvE. If PvP might actually mean something, then I'll consider it.

I would at least be willing to try it out if the gaf guild goes pvp, but the whole idea doesn't really appeal to me and I have always been pve only.

I am not allowing myself nor am I trying to set up others hopes up to high, but man the leaks have really been increasing lately.

This man was able to figure it out from a brief description of the conversation written by someone not bright enough to figure it out himself.

Think about that.

Also this thread is perfect for newcomers to look at about advanced classes and pretty much everything else. You can find more information on swtor forums and in the class respectable boards. There's huge amounts of information over there.

So I just watched the "Top Ten Reasons I'm Interested in SWTOR" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02a31i0zNuc) video and that really piqued my interest. I do play WoW, and my main complaint about it is that the world just doesn't feel...alive. It's a great world, for sure, but it feels like nothing I'm doing matters, which shouldn't be happening in a role-playing game. Do you think SWTOR solves this problem? I just want to know what the overall impression of this game in terms of the world is so far even though it's only in beta.

Whatever you do in terms of story choices will have consequences for you and your companions. You will feel the impact of your choices and "you" is really the keyword here. It wont affect other players that you complete your story and kill or spare X. BioWare have hinted at the possibility of world quests having an impact for everyone on the server, but I've yet to hear anything specific about this.

I would agree with this assessment.

That's a cool video. Even though I was already hyped through the roof, there was stuff in there I didn't even know about (your compansions crafting your stuff; awesome!). Thanks for the link!

Plenty of other crew skills too. They can gather materials for you and you can send companions on missions.

More info here

Also just noticed that Heir to the Empire is getting 20th anniversary edition, including kindle edition!

I sent my application a couple hours ago. Was part of the US guild but I'm changing allegiance to my home continent. I'll be playing trooper first go around.

Made a Chiss Bounty Hunter. Not sure if i should go evil or good. I felt pretty bad when I had a quest to take back a young sith from his father. The father asked me to let him and his son flee. I chose to shoot him and take his son back to his mother.

Congratulations on getting to beta, now remember the NDA so you won't lose your spot. There might be a BW guy lurking here now and then, so be careful! Unless ofc you were in an event/played at friends house.

Bummer that it'll be made on a PvE server...

No inviting other people yet. It's tied to your account.

You get a swift ban if you share it with someone as well. Some guy in my beta group got banned because he moved house.

I've no idea what I'm allowed to say, but there are some pretty horrendous issues with the games downloader/patcher that really need to be fixed.

As for the game itself, it feels like KOTOR (which I love) but not really much like an MMO (which is weird).

Wish I could say more, but I don't think my impressions would be as glowing as some others.

So Scoundrel is close range damage and Gunslinger is long range. Hmmm.... I still don't know which I want. A progression video would probably help. Come on, Bioware.

Good idea. It seems like glowing impressions are the only NDA violations that are allowed.

I know a few people who trade an account around, and they haven't run into a ban problem as of yet.

Now only one more thing to remember: Go enjoy the heck out of it you damned lucky one!

Will do! One thing tho, I don't think this will break nda. How come bounty hunters are imperial only, aren't they neutral?

I'm also up for going onto a PvP server. I'm not interested in battlegrounds, but the extra level of interest it adds to roaming the world is always welcome, and it sounds like the death penalties and ganking opportunities will be pretty minimal anyway.

There'll be some vague in-universe justification, I'm sure, but it ultimately boils down to the fact that "bounty hunter" is an extremely recognizable Star Wars trope and they're kinda evil, so they just dumped em on the Sith side and called it a day. Same reason Smugglers are Alliance.

Same reason Smugglers are Republic only. Because videogames.

Well, I have no idea if this is true or not, but considering that each class has their own story, I doubt BHs being on the sith side will mean that there story is a 'sith' story. Sticking them on the sith side is mostly the result of gameplay concerns - group quests, pvp and what not

Let's make it a vote on our guildpage on swtor.com

Best to keep current guildies involved in the decision making there.

Head on over to NeoGAF to post your vote!

Accepted four new members by the way. Sorry that it sometimes takes a while before you're accepted. I get busy now and then :)
If anyone wants to help me out with sorting that sort of stuff, just shout out and I'll make you an officer in the guild.
16 members and counting!
