Star Wars: The Old Republic [Releasing Date: Dec 20 NA/EU - NDA Lifted]

I'm a little late to the conversation, but I just wanted to say that if ToR is WoW with a Star Wars skin, I'm perfectly alright with that. I'm still playing WoW to this day. I love, love, LOVE my paladin tank. If I can get the same satisfaction being a tank in ToR, that would be exceptionally awesome. I get to tank with force powers and a lightsaber? Oh hell yes. Don't forget about the familiar music and semi-familiar scenery of that universe.

If it's something else completely, I'm okay with that too. I'm always up for trying something new. However, more and more people are saying it's like WoW and I really don't think that's a bad thing. WoW is dominant for a reason and it's wise of them to imitate.

You can describe large portion of MMO's as WoW with a different skin, much of the core of WoW is copied in many other games that just slap on a few new features to seperate it. Ironically some of the worst in MMO's seem to be the ones that try to change things up and fall flat on their face for it or just doing everything wrong about their "unique" features.

But really we have had this conversation how many times now? Most people I think know what to expect by now.

You do realize that large portion of WoWs core is copied from other mmo's. That's why one can't really say most mmo's are just copies of WoW, since WoW itself is a wellmade and polished copy of Ultima, Everquest and bunch of others.

But yes, seeing as WoW is the market leader atm, most gamers will compare TOR to WoW.

Edit: Also, a great 10 minute video leaked. I'd say it is even better than the 3 hour leak from a few months ago. This damn game looks like it is ready to go.
Totally missed this. Would you mind PM'ing a link if you can?

Gonna post some UI, and a random Alderaan pic for the hell of it. All of this is at that site everyone knows about. But it's like fight club. Ya.

I remember when people were accusing Warhammer Online of copying WoW.

Don't know many MMO's that don't. Find it ironic as WAR really was pretty far from the WoW formula outside of the UI/quest design.

It nice seeing the equip stuff, I wish more of the screens focus on these type of things. I do enjoy the landscape stuff as well, but those are a whole lot more abundant.

Likewise, if possible.

Same here.

On the note of MMO's being compared to WoW: Imho it's only logical.
It's the same for shooters. Even though theyre all the same at their core (a crosshair, guns and some form of healthbar) there will always be comparisons made to the dominant game in it's genre at the time.
It's the same for MMO's. People just love a leading game to make comparisons.

In the case of WoW it might also be us all just secretely hoping that there will be something to replace a great love/hate thing that's been going on for too long.

Pretty obvious the guy is a Consular with the stats his lightsaber has, and he has the Trandoshan companion. Another thing to note about equipment is that, the higher quality it is, the more upgrade slots there are. 3 for a lightsaber = grey pretty much. 4 blue, 5 purple.

Also: Everquest with a Warcraft skin.

The only thing I really love about WoW is the smooth and natural feel of the controls. Many tried to imitate; all failed. It's not just the WASD movement, it's everything combined with the feeling you actually have total control of your character. Also, the animations are really fluid, not choppy like in most MMO's. From what I've seen (like in this video) The Old Republic has really great animations, so they got that going already.

If SW:TOR can manage to totally copy WoW controls, they'll have a winner on their hands. The rest should just be original and innovative, imo. But I don't care, I'll play it anyways, the game looks way too amazing to just pass up!

Pretty much does. Just no auto attack.

I have to agree. For me, a lot of it is about feel. WoW's controls are crisp, responsive, and fluid. When I hit a button, I don't have to wonder if or when the ability happened. I can clearly see that it did and that it happened immediately. So when people say that ToR is kind of like that, it makes me happy.

I saw a screenshot on Reddit that was listing all the people on Courscant and it was like "Coruscant (81) Coruscant (85)....." This is a WoW style everyone is in a big world together MMO, right? That screenshot made it look like Guild Wars.

For the record, everyone can feel free to PM me every leaked video until the game is out, so sign me up.

Brought up before, but from what i've read, this was brought up in the official beta forums, and they were told it was just for testing. It will be open world, and this "sharding" of areas shouldn't happen unless there is massive server load in one area.

edit: and it's only happening on coruscant, and starter areas as far as I know.

So are beta invites being assigned to people on a mailing list or is it a 'friend of a friend of a friend' thing going on?

This thread is sort of hard to sift through.

Screens look awesome though, I'm assuming that it's pretty close to launching if the NDA has been lifted.

lolno

They're being sent out if you're registered for beta testing on the website. But I've been registered for years and didn't get one.

The NDA is still in place. There have just been a lot of leaks since the last huge wave of beta invites.

And I watch the leaks to spite BioWare for not sending me an invite yet.

I'm all like, "So you don't want me to see your game yet, huh? Well check this out! I'm gonna watch this video SO hard!"

Okay, that's not really how it goes. It really comes down to the fact that my appetite for this game really won't be quenched until I get my hands on it.

So you'd rather eat the dough raw than wait for the cake to be fully baked?

You could spoil your appetite and I'm pretty sure raw dough is unhealthy in large amounts.

Quite honestly if it wasn't for the leaks, my interest level would have completely dropped off. Bioware is releasing miniscule amounts of everything which is boring the hell out of me.

While I was okay with the leaks at first it seems that the recent wave of invites has brought a flood of new leaks along with it. There were a few livestreams happening last weekend on justintv and ustream and now we have almost daily updates from betacake. I just think it is too much right now.

Oh man, that's the wrong analogy to use with me. I loooove raw dough.

But yes, I will eat what has currently baked instead of waiting. I'm sure it tastes just fine at the moment and will only get better. :)

Mmm, tasty, uh, pie.

After watching the BH armor progression, that class seems a lot more alluring. Maybe it's the updated graphics/effects? Dunno but looks better than before.

While looking at some beta screens and videos, I noticed the IA doesn't have "ammo".

Has the reload mechanic been removed?

Trooper uses ammo, err, energy cells, Bounty Hunter has Heat, Jedi Knight has Focus points and Sith Warrior has Rage points, Jedi Consular and Sith Inquisitor have Force meter...
and... well, now i'm not quite sure but i think Smuggler and Imperial Agent have energy meter.

So ammo hasn't been removed, only class uses it though.

There is also an out of combat regeneration skill with a reload animation for at least one of the classes that some may have mistaken for some kind of ammo system.

I just hope there's no more of this "But to experience this awesomeness you really have to play the game" shit they've been rolling out recently.
"But to experience the end of this mission, you'll have to buy the game." Oh really, Dallas Dickinson? Can I just go out and buy it? No? THEN STOP TAUNTING ME

The ship interiors are absolutely wonderful, but it's beyond idiotic that (as far as I'm aware) other players can't enter your ship, nor can you even name your ship, which is probably the most grievous thing.

MaddenNFL64

Huh? Bioware has said others can enter your ship, haven't they? Maybe it's not implemented :(.

I know about the lack of customization though, that sucks. But it's only launch. The people will clamor, and it will come.

Along with instanced apartments on the capital cities :D.

*continues to daydream some more about stupid shit he'd like in TOR*
