I too have concerns about the state of game testing right now, considering the limited nature of the tests and the supposed launch window being 6 to 8 months away you really do have to wonder if they will be ready by then, if they were going to make the target I feel also that they would announce a launch date before the end of the year as well.

Guess we will have to wait and see what happens on this one.

Launch based on investor talk is like 4 months away. they said before April 2011. At this point I just dont see it happening though SWG wasnt quite ready for launch and they steamrolled the testers anyways and put it out

I never get into any closed beta's though I apply for all of them. I wonder if they just choose people with super rigs since the games are in such an unoptimized state? I'm curious what your computer specs are Lucius86?

I doubt it, that would serve no real purpose because when you launch a fair amount of your customers are going to be on midrange systems. If you can get it tested on that as a base then you know the higher systems will run the game. Not to mention that they want this to scale like WoW which is why they chose the art style.

Maybe after Lucius86 tests he can hint as to what the specs are, would not want him to risk his NDA while he is testing

I am kinda half expecting this game to be delayed til Quarter 2. Time is quickly running out and they havent moved onto wide state beta testing. Iknow they have done a ton of small batch testing but it would be pretty bad to skip the usual closed beta and just jump to an open beta then release

Many open betas are fairly short and often only a few weeks before games release. I wouldn't worry unless they don't start doing larger scale closed betas within the next month or two.

To what extent and how much testing they have been doing for months now is also unknown since it's been all limited and closed.

Oh yeah I have way too much experiance with MMO Betas which is really my concern. 4 months out or less from the stated launch goal things should be much further along beta wise typically in terms of wide spread closed beta

Still have my SWG Beta disks. Thats going back a ways when they had to mail you the disks heh

I don't think 2 years of beta could have helped SWG. They couldn't get so much of that game to work years after release. They seriously had a broken game that even after multiple patches and hot fixes, it couldn't get basic things to work on it.

Kodiak

Not an asshole.
Watching a bunch of trailers for this game and wow - looks great! Haven't been keeping up with it since last winter.

If this turns out to be as great as it looks its gonna be tough to choose between this, WoW, and GW2 - they all sound superb. There can only be one! (in my busy life)

Galaxies was far too ambitious in some areas for its time and lacking all togeather in others. Because it had so much ambition in areas it had a major issue when it came to development staff. Unlike most MMO where suddenly half the team is moved to expansions or whatever Galaxies pretty much required a 2nd team to even work on expansions due to the needs of the core game.

Which of course made Lucasarts very eager to change up the game and make it 1 team doable. Sad thing is since the collapse of the game more content has come out of the tiny group still doing the game than ever before it is just far too dead to matter

I'm concerned about the quality of writing in this game. So far it sounds very simple. Too simple. I expect ME quality to consider playing it (or at least something close to that).

Yeah, you know ME and its great writing. :lol

SWG was just ahead of it's time, the class system with the trees was amazing.

Totally agree. I loved the level of choice the game provided as far as professions. It allowed the most unique set of characters any game has ever offered. It was just too soon and then WoW took off and taught everyone to shrink the classes down to a small set.

The one thing that I have appreciated lately is that Bioware is starting to release some significant details about the game, ever since that EAgamer day in the UK they have been forthcoming on details about the warzones, crafting system and with this weeks Friday Update they also let loose some pretty interesting details in the community Q & A (if you have been following previous fan fridays, this info is basically worth all of those combined)

Community Q & A

The Old Republic community has a lot of questions and we want to answer as many as we can. In fact, we’re starting a new section on the forums dedicated to this purpose. If you have questions, please feel free to post them on the Community Q & A thread. We’ll be reviewing the questions as they come in, and we’ll answer whatever we can in these updates.

We ask that you would please keep the questions courteous and professional, and that you would avoid duplicating questions that have already been asked. Keep in mind, as well, there are some questions that we’re not able to answer right now, so if we don’t get your question specifically, it’s nothing personal.

This week, Daniel Erickson took time to answer a few questions he rounded up from various parts of the forums:

Q: What happens when a group member leaves during a quest, or even in the middle of a dialog *disconnects*? Will any AI take over?
A: No AI takeovers, the quest or conversation continues without them. You can hit escape and leave a conversation (multiplayer or otherwise) whenever you like.
Q: When getting a group quest, can you get 4 Bounty Hunters or do you have a specific class requirement to start the quest? How will we know which quest we need?
A: You can make a group of any mix of classes, including four of the same. There are several play groups here that enjoy doing just that. Full Trooper groups seem to be the most popular and look pretty amazing coming over a hill.
Q: Can I turn my helmet on/off?
A: Helmets will be on a toggle so you can show or not as you like. The cinematic team has an additional override control they can use to turn it off in conversation (in case you like to keep your Trooper helmet on with the awesome voice processing). That way they can override it occasionally to keep you from wearing your helmet during your romantic kiss scene (bonk!).
Q: Will the Advanced Classes be locked into a particular role, for example: Will a Juggernaut be locked to only a tank, or if he could fulfill other roles as well?
A: Each of the advanced classes is a full, flexible class with various trees that allow specialization. So although the Juggernaut is perhaps best suited to play a ‘tanking’ role, a player could specialize in other roles depending on what skills they choose and the tactics they use with their companions.
Q: Are the origin planets simply starting grounds, or will we come back to them past level 10?
A: You definitely have reasons to come back. Korriban, for instance, is where the Dark Council often meets. There are also reasons later for all of the classes to go to some of the other classes' origin worlds. It's important to us that lower level characters get to see some high level players strutting their stuff early on.

The 'death' system is also explained a bit in this post:

Hopefully this practice continues and we keep on getting these good weekly updates as a sign that the game is on or close to the launch target.

Didn't get the memo regarding the 14th Amendment
As per my NDA, I am finally happy to tell everyone that I am indeed now part of the Game Testing program.

Unfortunately that is all I can disclose, but I have been waiting for this day for a long time. Woot!

Hopefully everyone else in this thread gets an invite. Like already said, there should be a lot more invites on the way. It seems as if they have ramped up the game testing program (although this is simply speculation on my part).

Also, people from the UK are claiming to have gotten invited into the Game Testing program so it looks like the program is now expanding over from the US.

Ive been thinking about replaying Kotor 1 and 2 but it seems neither work very well at all on Windows 7 without doing a fuck load of installation crap. :(

Is it fun?! If you don't want to say it, just say "Micheal" if it's fun, and "Jackson" if it isn't. It can be in other threads, too.

I just recently was confirmed in, haven't actually participated in the program yet, so I will say George, for I dunno. ;)

The Style has grown on me. SOE reactivated all SWG accounts for a week and logging in it was jarring just how badly its aged.

TOR to me comes across as SWG with a better style to age with.

It doesn't help that SWG had a terrible rendering engine.

Oh for sure. Dathomir probably is the only planet besides barren tatooine that still looks alright. It helps its a darker planet so the really terrible shadows etc dont exist.

sykoex

Lost all credibility.
I think they just want the weapons to be big enough in the player's hand so you can tell when one looks different or more epic than another.

Yeah so got back from a few weeks abroad and found an invite, so busy installing now.

Got to take a few days off testing it to level Cata, but its all good!

It's a shame that the game didn't make the April target date, but not surprising. Now that EA is in charge of marketing, they will probably aim for a September release instead, and I guess that would suit Bioware fine as it means more time to work on the game.

All I want is collectors edition details soon :)

From the EA report, and previous info, it sounds like they will be trying for May/June release as it still falls in the spring release time frame Bioware gave and in Fiscal era EA says it plans to launch.

I am ging to guess it will end up launhing in June just in time for many to be free from school to find their new obsession. Writing seemed to be on the wall. Beta was not advancing anywhere near fast enough fo them to make it in march
