I got a Smuggler to 16 (Gunslinger) the weekend I had beta and my gf got a Consular to 20 (Sage). The Gunslinger is more or less a hunter from WoW that requires you to hide behind cover. I guess the cover is to try and make them feel more like whatever a Smuggler is supposed to be while creating PvP balance in that you're not doing very good DPS unless behind cover. Frankly I don't do PvP so the cover is uninteresting and feels completely pointless. At least there's the deployable cover, because otherwise I don't think anyone would bother with the AC otherwise.

The Sage is like the best parts of all caster classes in WoW combined, from what my gf told me. I can't speak to them mechanically as much, because I didn't play it, but she had a good time.

The leveling curve assumes you're doing at least the flashpoints, if not group quests and PvP on top of that. My gf didn't do any of those and ended up being underleveled for the planet after Taris. This isn't going to be vanilla WoW where you just go over to an equivalent level zone and quest there, you need to group with people at some point if you don't want your later levels to suck. While it won't make the people who want grouping to be the only viable way to level, the game does discourage solo play for the entirety of 1-50.

Loading has gotten better between the last weekend build and the build prior. It's still a little slow for my tastes so if you can afford to put the game on an SSD, you'd be doing yourself a big favor. I don't think there's too many load screen though, so I disagree with the other person in the thread who said that.

My computer is good enough to run the game on high. I didn't do any ini tweaks or anything like that so I don't know how well it runs with AA. That said, SWTOR runs like a dog when there is a ton of people on screen, like in the first hour in the lowbie zones after the servers come up. No amount of lowering the settings seemed to fix that. Also, there seems to be a memory leak where you play with the graphical settings. I tried a multitude of settings and then went back to my high settings but at half the fps. A restart fixed that though.

I only did the first flashpoint and my gf did one on Taris, but both were enjoyable. They start early in teaching boss mechanics ("do not stand in the fire" can be found in the first flashpoint). Both were enjoyable and not too trash heavy.

Spaceships are neat but seem underutilized. Perhaps that's just a consequence of the sub 20 game.

I didn't bother with PvP.

Choosing your AC in game may be confusing for some as their explanations don't always correlate to what the AC does. The Consular AC training explains the Sage as a healer and whatever the other AC was called as DPS, when that's not really the case.

I can't think of much else to mention.

So far Imperial Agent is my favorite class. I went in the beta with no interest in IA, but after playing it, I will probably roll one as my main. The story is great, and I loved the variety Operative has. They can stealth, be melee oriented, or heal. I played a healer for the most part and it was a ton of fun.
Good to hear! I'm planning on making the Imperial Agent my main character. I should probably try the Smuggler during the Thanksgiving weekend beta to get a feel for how cover works.

The Jedi Knight, Consular, and Trooper were pretty fun to play last weekend.

Uh...huh. Let me go look into that right now lol My consular's on Act 2.

I don't know if it's retroactive in the beta. Some folks were saying there character were past act 1 and it didn't unlock, and that they had to start and beat act 1 with a new character in this beta build.

I'm most excited about the idea of legacy experience and legacy levels. If those levels grant you items or perks then there is great incentive to not just endlessly raid after you reach 50, but to play other classes to build up legacy.

That would explain it. Yeah my character's hosed on this.

Still not sure about this game. That's why I'm happy I'm in the beta, I get a chance to try it out without having to dish out 55 euros. You get a month when you buy the game right?

Lot of folks are saying the new build has increased much of the games difficulty, so I dunno about that. And if the cutscenes bug you, you can skip them and dialogue stuff.

The replay critique is kind of pointless since its far worse with pretty much all other MMOs. TOR at least offers unique starting areas and quest material for all classes, along with the companion stuff which is unique as well. Yea stuff is shared between the game in areas, but compared to other MMOs where every single thing is the same between character classes? TOR is far more alt friendly since you are going to get some new content at least with your alt unlike other MMOs.

Apparently there is also a lot of whining over the new build making the game "too hard" and the original difficulty was "just right". I guess you can't please everybody.

There was also random odd difficulty spikes in the previous builds. You will steam roll through enemies higher level than you, then a single normal enemy of your level would give you a run for your money. There was obvious balancing of difficulty needed, though I do agree that alot of the previous build felt "too easy"

Hmm see enemies still have the old portable cover shields instead of crouching. Never looked into it, but do enemy ai that takes cover, do they actually get cover bonuses and cover immunities like players, or is it just cosmetic?

Damn, I tried to use that code from 40 minutes ago and it was already used.

If it was the code I posted, sorry! Nobody even claimed it too, so it's kinda dumb to not say "yoink", unless a lurker got it :(

That surname thing sounds dumb.....shared across all characters? I know Bioware likes alien sex, but come on...that will be one ugly family tree.

I played in the recent weekend beta test and generally had a good time. I played a level 14 human Gunslinger (Smuggler) and also ran through the starting zone with a level 9 Twilek Jedi Consular. I've had some MMO experience in the past (2 years+ with WoW, 1 year with Dungeons and Dragons Online, dabbled in Rift and LotRO). Here are some overall impressions.

Pros

- The non-fantasy setting (even though it's merely a cosmetic change for the most part) is refreshing. Plus, IT'S STAR WARS, weeeeeeee! As soon as you click OK when picking a server, you hear the *snap hiss* of a lightsaber and can't help but smile
- The companion system is great. Having someone with you that you can equip and semi-customize is fun. Plus being able to send your buddy off to sell your junk automatically is fantastic. Your companion also can go off an craft for you, though it does take 60 secs for him to come back, so I could maybe see that getting tedious
- I ran one early Flashpoint (Esseles) which I enjoyed for the most part, but I do have some concerns (listed below)
- Very impressed with the overall smooth and lag-free gaming experience-
- Enjoyed the starting areas (particularly the Consular)
- The Gunslinger was great fun. The cover system and range of abilities seemed very rewarding. Would definitely consider playing this class as my main

Cons

- You have to use regular ol' chat to get into a pick-up group. Really wished there was a LFG tool
- When in Flashpoints, the dialogue sequences are too long and I imagine when repeating Flashpoints in the future, it will really bog down the experience. Also, when you reach points where the group needs to trigger an event (accessing a computer, flipping a switch, etc.) ALL party members must activate the task until a green checkmark appears and not move until everyone has done so. I can see this getting infuriating in certain pick-up groups
- This is more of an MMO trope and not necessairly TOR-specific, but MAN, there is a lot of walking in the early levels. Would be nice to have more taxi points or temp mounts to help alleviate the tedium
- I didn't see any in-game voice chat function, though I didn't look too hard

At the end of the day, TOR is incredibly similar to WoW. That can be a Pro or a Con depending on who you ask. I did have a fun time with it and will most likely pick it up at or closely after launch.

Thanks for the impressions. More detailed impressions like that one would be nice.

Given the popularity of the in game voice chat in WoW, I could see Bioware skipping that.

Yeah, if TOR's implementation would be the same as WoW's, then yes I'd agree we can skip it. Dungeons and Dragons Online has a fantastic voice chat system that was super easy to use and had great audio quality. I don't understand how other MMOs can't get this feature right. It would really help with the extra bits of coordination needed in Flashpoints.

I played 4 Flashpoints in last week's Beta Weekend. Black Talon is very talky, which is cool the first time, but after my 4th run, my guildies were space-baring through the dialog. Hammer Station was really cool and not wordy at all. The
Asteroid Gun
was awesome! The Tomb Opens wasn't wordy either, but had a great ancient tomb feel which was a nice change of pace from all the "spacey" stuff. The Mandalorian Raiders Flashpoint was very difficult. We couldn't even beat the second boss, but we were levels 23-20 in a level 24+ flashpoint.

BTW, I do have a beta code from Bioware's Social Network, so first person to reply to this post gets it.

So I got an email saying I'd been picked to join the beta but there's no key attached to the email. Am I missing something?

Beta doesn't start until the 25th, is what I'm hearing. At that point, those chosen to be in the beta will get emails.

You'll get a follow up e-mail next week with a link to download the game as well as the dates you can play included (which is Thanksgiving weekend.)

Finally people can stop hiding behind the NDA.

Anyway side quests are the most part god awful and consist of fetch/kill this quest. The only times I've seen morality or your decisions count towards anything storytelling-wise is in the main storyline.

That's not necessarily true. There's a morality events on the Esseles and the Black Talon flashpoints that do count towards something within the flashpoints.

Also the fetch quests pop up when you're already doing the activity.

they should put a timer in group check ins in flahpoint so the game can auto expel players. Otherwise you are stuck waiting for random idiots to opt in.

Wait, so is there a beta this weekend? My friend gave me a beta key, I put it in, and every time I try to log in now it says wrong id/password when I know they're 100% correct.

Also, their website is horrible at sharing that information

Those are relatively contained and in some cases really don't change much like the end of the Esseles where you have the choice to give the ambassador up. It's mostly a dialog/scene difference as the outcome is pretty identical. Also for alot of missions as I've stated in the past, there just isn't any sense of consequence.

What? Most of the quests in of themselves are kill this mob, scan this thing, or pick this up. That's it.

God FUCKING dammit. I tried doing the patch approach, and my game would not load in after i loaded my character.

So I did a full wipe and re-install. Now the servers are down for maintenance. Fucking shit!

How is this for people who generally do not like MMO's? Is it possible to engage the game as an immersive, single player experience?

Somewhat. However, the better stuff is the flashpoints which you need groups for. It is however NOT Kotor 3+4+5+6+6+whatever.

omg multiquote.

I think the leveling curve would prevent someone from playing the game 100% single player, unless you want to find a corner to park in and grind.
