Steam Controller Thread | Comfy Couch Sold Separately

On the topic of a revision, I sure hope they can add another button or two somewhere, perhaps below the Steam button or maybe add back in two triangular-like buttons inwards from the trackpads like in earlier prototypes. I feel like it can sometimes be easy to fill up all the buttons and still want to bind more stuff without putting it on touch menus.

Four grip buttons in the back would be ideal.

the people who use button click instead of touch release for the track pad are terrible people

people who don't have double tap for reload are terrible people too

It's insane to me that the #1 used config for Super Meat Boy is with the dpad on click. How are people playing such a challenging platformer with such a poor control scheme? Maybe I'm the bad one lol

Just this back in June:

We'll probably have to wait for info from Dev Days in October. I could really do with the next controller being a bunch quieter. Also having another set of paddles would be extremely useful as I'm always stuck with only one or two buttons that I regularly use but can only go on face buttons, or I'm using action sets regularly and need a better place to access them.without moving to the face buttons so often.
Thanks. Now I need to consider whether to wait that long or just get a third when it's out :p

I was trying to use my steam controller with half life 2 the other day to get used to it a bit more, and the gyro function didn't appear to be working correctly, like it would just sort of jitter all over the place with gyro enabled, but not with any sense of purpose.

Is this a common problem? Is there any fix? And are there any functions within steam to test the functionality of your controller?

They're not. That's the problem with the current way that configs are ranked, it's usually the first ones to be published (warts and all) end up being at the top of the list and thus are the first to be tried with few people bothering to try another one over just editing it for personal use or then giving up on using the controller entirely. I've been saying for a while Valve need to do a little more work on sorting community configs.

I remember Valve saying that any revisions they make to the controller won't really be adding functionality. The Steam controller does everything it will do for the foreseeable future.

If you're comfortable with the ergonomics and feel of the controller, I don't think there's really a need to wait.

I just wish they'd at least make a less clicky version. My mate gets annoyed playing WoW with me because of the constant clicking he can hear over the mic.

Has anyone tried the steam pad with rocketleague?
Yes, I've only used a 360 controller a couple of times, but the Steam Controller for probably 95%+ of the time I've played Rocket League.

The only oddity is that the game won't usually detect the controller if it's turned on when you start the game. Make sure it's off, start the game, then turn the controller on. It's a known issue and Psyonix don't want to alter the behaviour of how controllers are detected so won't be fixed. Unfortunately I can't find the link right now, but it definitely works this way.

I mapped the acceleration to the right trigger, and full press right trigger to boost. It works really well.

I've never had this issue, but I haven't played in the past 2 months I think. Pretty much only using the Steam Controller, and same config as you.

My Steam Controller doesn't doesn't get recognized by The Witcher 3 anymore. I can see the community profiles, but the controller doesn't work in-game. It's the GOG version. Anyone know what the problem might be?

That's odd, it's always been an issue with the controller and Rocket League for me (or at least for more than two months).

If the controller is on before I start the game, it sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. If I make sure it's off before I start, then turn it on once at the main menu, it works every time.

I spent ages searching and eventually came across an official response somewhere (that I can't find now) stating it took a lot of system resources to search for XInput controllers (or DirectInput, whichever the Steam Controller is that the 360 controller isn't) so they just didn't bother.

Overlay doesn't work on Rainbow six anymore, anytime I press home it pops out to desktop. Only half of my controller binds work, and then the ones that do are only firing their base input.

Rocket League was bundled with the controller initially.

But yes, it's the controller I use for the game.

Thanks to both, I'll try some setups.

Did you recently enable SweetFX or ReShade? I think that breaks the controller in Witcher 3 for some reason.

Apparently some solutions here https://steamcommunity.com/app/292030/discussions/0/350532795337742972/, have to edit the desktop config I guess.

I'm hoping they eventually allow you to configure the number of buttons on a directional / button pad. I'd like to be able to have up to as many buttons available as on a touch menu, but without needing an overlay / BPM to have them work. Would also finally allow binding of functions to diagonals.

Wow, Doom is pretty damn amazing on the Steam Controller!

I've already gone through Ultra Violence with the mouse and keyboard and enjoyed it, but I'm very impressed that the Steam Controller has such a great setup by default and maintains similar speed and freedom of movement / control. Definitely going to have fun blasting through the game again with the controller and Ultra-Violence.

I'm having a tough time aiming in FPS. Specifically Overwatch. How are you guys doing on that game?

Try a combination of the right trackpad and gyro as well as adjusting sensitivities including the sensitivity adjustments in the game. It takes some trial and error to get it to feel just right for you.

Can't believe that all this time I never know you could bind a scroll wheel to the analog, and the scroll wheel also allows the binding of up to 10 actions you can scroll back and forth through. I imagine that'd work pretty well for static UI, but not so much for menus that lead somewhere, due to the need for lots of action sets.

If only there were better options available, like maybe being able to assign situationally-triggered action sets. Perhaps one that only can be triggered when the mouse is in a certain location, like when hovering over a certain menu option in a game, so that a press of the A button could then be used to switch to an action set dedicated for the new menu that will open when clicking that menu option. It would take out the need for the transition action set that I think would be needed currently to make it work (which takes more time).

Out of curiosity I went back and tried the Exact Aiming aim practice game at http://aim400kg.com/ea/ that has popped up before. I got these results:

Mouse:
$

Steam controller (mostly gyro):
$

Admittedly there was only one mouse run and three controller runs as I slowly configured my desktop gyro and put the smoothing to 0 (and I still think speed could be slightly increased by making the trigger more responsive with a soft pull, as opposed to using a full pull for all those clicks). It felt more "taxing" to do that well with the controller compared to the mouse, but at least it got fairly close in performance. The cursor was a bit jittery because of slight movements, but it didn't affect hitting targets much.

Absolutely not. While the Steam controller hardware is nice, it's the software that powers it and I find it very underwhelming; it has so many ways to make the experience perfectly tuned to a game, but it doesn't work very well outside of Steam (some would say not at all), and it needs more native support by games (such as proper button prompts, day one official configurations, etc.).

More support by developers for the Steam controller would be amazing. I get crowd sourcing for past games but new ones should employ it.

It's definitely be great if more devs implemented native support, but for games that have absolutely no chance of getting it, like nearly all existing games, I'd like more features available so that it's possible to more easily create setups resembling a native implementation.

I'm better at Osu with the controller than m+kb T^T

Also, hope Valve is working on some way to fix a non-responsive controller without leaving a game (or prevent it in the first place). I seem to be getting a stuck configuration a lot lately, that can only be fixed by going into BPM from the desktop and minimizing it before going back into the game.

Apologies is this is old or silly to ask but I'm trying to play Doom with the steam controller and I don't know what to do. This is what I'm experiencing:

- With a 360 controller, no problem whatsoever.
- I plug the steam controller, steam tells me to enable BPM overlay. I do that, the game crashes while trying to load.
- I disable BPM overlay (there's a warning telling me some controller functionality will be disabled) and choose recommended controller configuration, the game runs fine but steam controller works weird . In the menu I can move with the stick, confirm with 'A' and cancel with 'Start'. In-game I can aim with right pad, shoot with right trigger and jump with 'B', but I can't move.

Am I... doomed? Thank you in advance.

Are you runing the Steam beta client? Is your gamepad firmware up to date?

I thought I was out of the beta but I was mistaken, so I have opted out now and that was it! The game no longer crashes when the overlay is on (still the controller doesn't work without the overlay).

Thank you!

Deus Ex Mankind divided seems to be getting Steam controller support, based on the new bundle with it:

http://steamcommunity.com/games/337000/announcements/detail/930377397318611908
That's great! One of the reasons I haven't started Human Revolution is due to lack of mouse+gamepad support. Playing through Mankind Divided with the Steam Controller could be a nice way to enter the series.

Between this and the DOOM bundle, it feels like the device is doing great. Hopefully support increases and devs start to understand the device more as time goes on.

I think for the first time ever I got called a hacker when using the controller in Counter Strike. Went 40-4 in Inferno Casual somehow, lol. I really need something that records a lot longer than Shadowplay.

You should be able to manually start and stop recordings with Shadowplay, it's only limited by your hard drive space basically.

There's only one feature request I have for future updates. I haven't communicated this to anyone before now so I don't expect it to happen, but I would love a shortcut to turn off haptic/vibrate across a profile. Either a batch off switch or a more powerful haptic disable would be fine. It's annoying having to turn it off for each part each time I download a profile, and even more so now that they make you go deeper to find the option on some things now with all these activation states or whatever they're called.

And when oh when are we getting customisable Big Picture mode controls?

Quantum Break is getting full Steam Controller support as well, which is surprising since the game was exclusive to the W10 store up until now.

It isn't. It's just the standard "full controller support" banner and stating that it is recommended to use a controller, not mouse and keyboard

Looks like they've gone and broken the functionality of the left trackpad on both the stable and beta branches. Good thing I finished AM2R before this happened, I don't have any other gamepads with me where I'm staying right now.

Really though, I should've known better than to assume I could go without something actually reliable as a backup, like a 360 controller. Such is the life of a Steam controller user...
